However, Despite my brother being the one who signed the papers, paid for the service, received the empty urn that was shipped to him to store until the time came, he was suddenly not allowed to speak with anyone or even pick up Mom's cremains without my permission. This was extremely concerning for us. When Mom passed the transporters took 4+ hours to come to Charlottesville from Richmond with very little communication as we waited. One positive is that they put her head on a quilted pillow and covered her with a pretty quilt to remove her. At the time of transport, we were asked if we wanted them to save a lock of hair or get her fingerprint, we chose the fingerprint. However, it was not included with her cremains. That can't be remedied. We asked for 4 death certificates. 2 came with the cremains but something happened that the other 2 were not included. They were shipped to my house requiring a signature, which meant I had to be home to receive it. I only hope that those who handled the actual cremation were more competent.

When my stepfather died in December 2024, John Anderson Jr. (Funeral Director) told my mother she would have to pay an additional $800.00 for a variety of items she did not request (Including a new body bag he stated was legally mandated, which is false.) When I and other family members met with him to ask for an explanation as to why there were more charges on a prepaid plan, he was defensive, evasive, profoundly unsympathetic and unprofessional. He insisted that the business is his mother's, and that he knew nothing about the prepaid agreements. He was unable and/or unwilling to pull any files he should have had from the prepaid arrangement. He never answered any of our questions, claimed he was being attacked, and professed to hating his job. He told my mother he would drop the charges to $200, and asked if "that would make her happy?", as if we were negotiating a bar tab. Upon examination, we realized that the original documents for my parents were not even actual contracts, and that most likely none were ever created. The grief we were experiencing was compounded by the unfeeling and sarcastic attitude of Mr. Anderson, and the knowledge that the remains of our loved one was in the hands of someone who was untruthful and totally disgruntled about his occupation and having to perform it. Anderson Funeral Service failed to provide an actual contract and attempted to extract money for services that were included in the prepaid agreement. I am extremely concerned that the unethical, if not illegal, actions of Anderson Funeral Service will continue to be perpetrated on other vulnerable families.

Well having spent my week helping a friend who's Mother passed on Monday, I have come to the…read moreconclusion that the greed of some companies cannot be matched or tolerated. The Covenant Funeral Services Fredericksburg, VA, has got to be one of the greediest and most heartless companies I have ever run across. When a family is at their most vulnerable and when they need the understanding of others, these vultures put greed above caring. They offered no alternatives except that she have the entire fee paid in advance, even given the low income package with no viewing only a burial service they expect her to come up with $6500 plus $1200 opening fees in 3 days, Monday afternoon to Friday morning. Then if it is not paid in full they will just put her in the freezer for a recurring fee till everything is paid. This is just heartless and I don't fall for the we get burnt on no pays, they have the same legal recourse I have on a heat pump installation. I have found most people will pay even if it is slow. Most businesses don't even get a deposit before work is complete. Seems to me there is a contradiction in terms with the $7700, paid in full in basically 3 days and "low income package." Hard for me and most of the people I know to swing that kind of money in 3 days in this economy. Just a damn shame that you have to be put through this kind of abuse when you lose a loved one.
