I loved the food here! It was my first introduction to Indonesian food, but I went twice during my…read moretrip to Leiden. The first night I had the lontong surakarta - cubes of sticky rice, chicken in a sweet-spicy sauce, vegetables, with toasted coconut and peanuts to sprinkle over it. There was far more food than I could eat, and 14 euro wasn't unreasonable. The second night, I went with a group, and we got the rijsttafel (not sure if it was the 12 or 18-dish version). There was a lot of food - we didn't come close to eating it all - and a good variety of dishes (even the vegetarians got plenty to eat), but I actually liked the lontong surakarta much better. The spekkoek was pretty good, though. The atmosphere isn't great. Tables are packed very close together (such that you often get bumped by a server or someone at another table), and it gets very noisy at dinnertime, since it seems to be a popular restaurant. I ate there the first night around 6pm, and it wasn't a problem finding a table that early. It did seem unusual that I was sitting by myself, though.

Two people can easily split one of the chicken dishes since they come with 3 sides as well. I recommend the Ayam Opor Surakarata - super tender pieces of chicken cooked in coconut milk. The vegetables on the side are eggplant, tofu with green beans, and cucumbers. Service was good and we've always been able to walk in without reservations.

However, when we tried this place, I was super surprised! Red Jedjeki was packed on a Wednesday evening. We didn't have reservations, but we were fortunate the sweet lady found a place for us to sit. I must say, this is hands down the best Indonesian food in the world! We ordered the menu for 2 people. A mixture of different dishes. Their side nasi goreng is ok, but everything else we had was so heavenly. I especially enjoyed their beef stew, sprouts with peanut sauce, picked cucumbers and carrots, green beans and boiled egg with a red sauce on top. Now, if you can tell me where else they have Indonesian food like Redjeki's, then please do share and I'll take a trip out there! Thank you guys for an awesome experience. We did have left overs and had it for lunch today. Well done to the lady and gentlemen who worked at Redjeki last night. We had a wonderful experience! It's worth the 5 stars. This is the place to visit if you want to try some Indonesian food in the Netherlands! Plus, Delft is such a cute town!

Overall: 5 stars…read more When I searched where I could partake on the Indonesian Rice Table feast in Amsterdam, Sampurna came up with their intriguing Satay Solo course that has a small plates of everything. I love the concept because it offers so much insight into the cuisine without having to consume in such large volumes. That said, this "solo" rice table was still food that was more than 2 meals worth for me, but much better than 12 meals worth. Love the food and the flavors, and was impressed by how well everything was cooked and balanced each other. [ PART I ] Chicken Skewers - Classic chicken satay with peanut sauce that is tender and works well with that sweet and savory profile. Beef Skewers - Love these beef skewers that have a strong meatiness to the bite. Goat Skewers - Very intriguing, not too gamey meat with a relatively sweet profile that works. Nasi Goreng - Well flavored fried rice that stands on its own but tastes even better with the rice plate. Bami Goreng - Deliciously decadent noodles powered by the bacon. Daging Smoor - I love the flavor profile of this sweet braised beef; its tender, its strong in flavor, and goes so well on top of the bed of rice. [ PART II ] Jagung Kacang Panjang - light clean dish with delicious vegetables; great balance to the menu. Salat Manga - Flavorful and refreshing mango salad in a peanut dressing that has sweet and nutty profile; this dish is bold in flavor but also provides some relief to the other heavier flavors on the menu. Sambal Goreng Telor - The sambal gives such a bold flavor to moisten and flavor the boiled egg; this would taste even better if the egg were soft boiled. Acar Ketimun - Much needed component of the rice table that provides acidity and freshness to contrast all the bold flavors of the menu. Serundeng - Toasted coconut and peanut topping I sprinkled onto the noodles; adds a tropical twist to the dish. Emping - Nutcrackers that are even more crisp than the shrimp crackers. Gives a density and sharp textural component. Food: +1 Presentation: E Price: +1 Atmosphere: E Service: E Menu: +2 Insta/Yelp/Beli: @amei_eats Insta/TikTok: @ameizing.race

Everything looked amazing, so she helped us narrow down the options. We had a sampling of starters that featured a fish cake, pickled vegetables, pork sate, spring roll and banana leaf wrapped rice roll. We also had a sampling of the satay, that included pork, chicken, lamb and beef. Best satay I've ever had - flavors are perfect and spice amount is just right. For entrees, we had the banana leaf wrapped fish and the lamb dish. Each dish was prepared to perfection with just enough spice to bring out the flavors of the fish and lamb. Service was outstanding! And actually we should have gone way before today, as the food was great :-) For example for starters, we took amongst other satays. In the Netherlands, a satay is normally some meat which is drown under peanut sauce. Not at all here, those were simply very nice skewers with a gentle touch of different meats and sauces. The steam cooked crab and fish cooked in a banana leave was simply excellent. Then for main some chicken, simple and delicious, and lam, with so many fantastic spices. So this place offers very refined Indonesian food, without the usual heavy food of other "traditional" Indonesian restaurant in the Netherlands. For the service, it's good and efficient, nothing special to say about that one.

We missed an opportunity in Amsterdam due to our chosen restaurant being fully booked. We chose to eat here as our last dinner before flying home. The restaurant is beautiful and spacious inside. We were among the early parties, so the space was warming up for the night. Our guidebook recommended having a Dutch Rijtsttafel, and what better place to have it! This is a family-run establishment with a long history. Our menus came with Java-Bode, their house publication, detailing their 40-year history. The walls are adorned with vintage KLM Royal Dutch Airlines airplanes and advertisements. I love their nod to Dutch aviation. Our rijtsttafel was very enjoyable. It's hard to keep track of everything on the table, so I kept a menu for reference. What a great way to conclude our time in Holland!

We didn't realize how popular De Lachende Javaan is--they were completely fully booked! The owner noticed we were visiting from out of town and was incredibly accommodating. He explained the situation but managed to squeeze us in, provided we could eat relatively quickly before the next reservation arrived. We were so grateful because the meal ended up being fantastic. Since it was our first time trying Indonesian food, we went with the Rijsttafel Biasa (the smallest menu option). It was a variety of small plates served on portable burners to keep everything warm, accompanied by rice. It was the perfect introduction--there wasn't a single dish I didn't love. Even though the plates look small, we were completely full and satisfied by the end. We managed to finish just in time for the reserved party to take the table, so it worked out perfectly. Highly recommend booking a table in advance, but if you get the chance to eat here, definitely do it!
