Let me preface by saying the ambiance was lovely as was the owner. Now, triple layer of a 50 ft row of food. You pick. They microwave your selections, throw a half a boiled egg on it and some shrimp chips. Voila! A mushy microwaved meal. In all fairness, tho could have been great food if we had the option. Flavors were their. Quality of meat, not. I would not return

Spicy noodles, soy chik'n, Brussel sprouts, mixed veggie and sweet tempeh.

Just Wow. Tons of vegan options. Flavor explosion. I won't be able to get this food out of my thoughts. We will come again during our stay in Amsterdam. The most flavorful vegan or otherwise meal I've ever had.

Wow....... Like wowzers!! I think I've written enough reviews proclaiming the heeeerlijkness of indo-food, but this place really puts others to shame! HUGE selection and for you veggie heads out there the herbivore selection knows no bounds and trying to select two is close to torture!! If you haven't been here before, I shall explain the process... 1. Walk to the very back of the toko - this is the start line. 2. Select one of the rices, noodles (there are MANY to choose from) 3. Select two veggie dishes. This is no easy tasks folks!! They all look super lekker and if you are a fan of tempeh, you will be in heaven!! I had the aubergine/tempeh in spicy sauce and peanut sprouts... but in doing so I missed out on the sate bean sprouts, spiced sweet potatoes, other tempeh schempeh dishes... .AAARRRG... I had to quickly calm the F down and tell myself that I will be back....... 4. Select two meat dishes. The "spicy" ones are REAAAAALLY flavorful, but not that spicy. Also a huge selection and any choice you make will be right choice. 5. Next, go sit down and enjoy!! Wat suuuper gezellig is, is that you don't pay until you leave. So just sit down, grab a drink yourself if you are thirsty, and when you leave, you can pay for whatever you consumed. What really tops this place off to a 5-star rating is the decor. Bamboo napkin holders on the wall... in fact, you can't see the wall with all the orchids, vines, oriental decoration, lights... you'll know what I'm talking about when you walk in. But what I love the most is homegirl (owner) has pictures of herself all over! As someone from southeast asia, I'm happy to see stuff like this as it reminds me of the culture over there. When you walk into someone's house, you will see MASSIVE pictures (larger than real size) or scrolls of the women or marriage photos. Here, you will see pictures of homegirl in the rice fields, homegirl with her hands together, homegirl brushing her hair in the warm Indonesian breeze. Either way, homegirl loves her pictures and I hope you love them too. I FOR sure will be back because I need to eat the other billions of selections they have.

Spicy noodles with some veggies with soy and spicy chicken.

Really delicious food, and the owner is very nice. It's fast because the dishes are premade, but it tastes very fresh

It was the best Indonesian food that I had while staying in Amsterdam and The Hague for a week.

This is our first time having Indonesian in Holland. My mother and I knew to reserve our table as…read moresoon as possible after we walked by the restaurant. We missed an opportunity in Amsterdam due to our chosen restaurant being fully booked. We chose to eat here as our last dinner before flying home. The restaurant is beautiful and spacious inside. We were among the early parties, so the space was warming up for the night. Our guidebook recommended having a Dutch Rijtsttafel, and what better place to have it! This is a family-run establishment with a long history. Our menus came with Java-Bode, their house publication, detailing their 40-year history. The walls are adorned with vintage KLM Royal Dutch Airlines airplanes and advertisements. I love their nod to Dutch aviation. Our rijtsttafel was very enjoyable. It's hard to keep track of everything on the table, so I kept a menu for reference. What a great way to conclude our time in Holland!

We found this place online while visiting Haarlem for the day and decided to walk in right when…read morethey opened for dinner. We didn't realize how popular De Lachende Javaan is--they were completely fully booked! The owner noticed we were visiting from out of town and was incredibly accommodating. He explained the situation but managed to squeeze us in, provided we could eat relatively quickly before the next reservation arrived. We were so grateful because the meal ended up being fantastic. Since it was our first time trying Indonesian food, we went with the Rijsttafel Biasa (the smallest menu option). It was a variety of small plates served on portable burners to keep everything warm, accompanied by rice. It was the perfect introduction--there wasn't a single dish I didn't love. Even though the plates look small, we were completely full and satisfied by the end. We managed to finish just in time for the reserved party to take the table, so it worked out perfectly. Highly recommend booking a table in advance, but if you get the chance to eat here, definitely do it!
