I used to be a recurring customer because their food was ok but this time I ordered the Char Siu Fried Rice and they mistakenly delivered Special Fried Rice (+£2) . I didn't notice this because Special Fried Rice also has Char Siu in it. When I calmly asked them to adjust the bill at checkout, the female owner quickly shifted blame to us and insisted we should remind her about the wrong delivery, all while acknowledging the fact that another server has mistakenly taken our order. At this point, things are going out of hand so I pull out my camera to protect myself. She instantly freaked out and threatened to call the police, all while screaming and shouting at me and others. I am really disappointed not only because the food has gone downhill but also my troubled encounter with the owner. I trust this is a genuine mistake but her reaction was way out of line. No customer deserved to be treated like this. And for those who are interested, I finally give in and I was pressured to pay the additional £2.

Surprisingly the broth was the best part of the soup. We had a 3 hour break between Harry Potter Part 1 and Part 2, and I had seen many Pho restaurants in the Chinatown area. So found the one with most stars on both Yelp and Maps, and Com Viet came up. It is a short walk, and they promptly opened at 5, and we were the first ones one. We were done with the meal and out of there in 30 minutes, so they were very efficient. The food was OK, and served quickly. The beef pho is normally £13.50, but I asked for extra noodles so got bumped to £17 (which is more than 20 dollars). It didn't come with extra noodles (or they serve very little noodle in the normal). It is the thick rice noodle kind...if someone orders extra, there is no reason why you shouldn't just overfill it...rice noodle is cheap. What I should have done is get a refill after I had left over broth. The broth itself was very good, but there was very little beef (just sliced and no other options) and the bean sprouts, basil, and culantro. It was all pretty limp and sparse. It was strange...they had all the signs of a generic restaurant that serves a lot of dishes, and has pho on the menu..but this usually means the broth is made from powder. I don't think this was...it tasted like genuine cooked broth....but the noodle miss really put a bad taste for this place. Also ordered chicken wings (£9.80) and spring rolls (£8.60). The wings were good...7 pieces cooked over a charcoal fire, but a bit bland and not crispy. The spring rolls were 3 small ones, split in half, served with chili sauce, stuffed with vegetables. The service was OK, doing the minimum. There is a mandatory 12.5% service charge added. Yes, I know that this is a tourist area, but the Chinese and Korean restaurants do a good job of serving a good rendition of their cuisine that could survive in other non-tourist places. Com Viet would not survive outside of this area....the food is too mediocre and expensive, and would be a bad choice for a pho craving.

For a starter I had the 'soft shelled crab'. I have had this dish a number of times, both good and bad, they do it well at Tre Viet, with a decent amount of spice. For a main course I had 'Beef with chilli and lemon grass'. One again, I have had this dish a good few times. The dish had a great flavour, which is very important, but I found the meat was scarce and was not of the best quality. Overall, I was satisfied with the food. I guess you have to remember that you get what you pay for, and you really do at Tre Viet with the average main course costing around 7 pounds. Unfortunately, the main courses came with an interval of a few minutes between the four dishes we ordered, the last one coming ten minutes after the first. It was forgivable, but if forgiveness in not in your nature then it might be a problem as they offered no compensation. There are just a few tables inside and it's close but comfortable. The food, OMG so good. Introduced my wife to Green Papaya salad and this was definitely the place for someone to try it. The salad was perfectly dressed and their dressing had a "sweet heat" that left a nice little light burn that was gone in a few seconds. After the papaya salad we had one bowl of pho with brisket and the other with rare beef. The broth was clear and had excellent flavor, both the brisket and the rare beef were tender and excellent. They gave us a nice plate of bean sprouts, herbs and limes to add to the broth and perfectly cooked noodles. We asked for siracha which added (for me) a perfect hit of heat to the bowl. Impeccable, friendly service (better than we had a Gordon Ramsay's "The River Restaurant" at the Savoy) and the staff came by and chatted after we finished up.
