The person they sent us, however was elderly and unable to do hard work without feeling ill. V.A. was supposed to send out a manager to check on how we were feeling about the help we were getting, but never did in the 7-8 months we employed them. They did not seem to know (?) that the person sent to help us was too ill or uncaring or unmotivated (?) to carry out the tasks we required. We will be out of here quite soon now and are thankful for the help and the existence of Visiting Angels in this community, but feel they should monitor their employees and keep tabs on how employers are feeling about their helpers. I would recommend that if you employ people from V.A. (or anywhere else) that you are very clear about what you need to have accomplished and spend time training 'your' helper before you expect them to fully understand your priorities. Also they (V.A.) are paid $30.00 by us (or you) and only pay $12.00 to their employees. I don't believe their are benefits, but I'm not entirely sure. Our housekeeper was 70 yrs old and in poor health. Also she was weak after having a heart attack. We felt as though we couldn't fire her. Where would she work if not V.A.?

Something didn't seem right, so I contacted the insurance company myself. They told me they had never received the prescription or prior authorization from New West Medical. When I returned to the office and told them what my insurance had said, the employee responsible for submitting the order admitted that it had never been sent. I was shocked that I had been told twice that my insurance denied something that had never even been submitted. I was also told that because other Cubby Bed requests had been denied in the past, they chose not to submit my son's order at all. A medical supply company is not my son's physician. Their role is to process and submit the physician's prescription--not to decide on their own whether it is worth submitting based on assumptions about what an insurance company might do. That decision belongs to the insurance company, and if coverage is denied, families have the legal right to appeal. Because my son's prescription was never submitted, we were denied that opportunity. If you're told your insurance denied medically necessary equipment, verify it directly with your insurance company. Better yet, ask your physician to send the prescription directly to your insurance so you can work with them yourself. That's exactly what my son's doctor is now doing. I hope New West Medical changes its practices so no other family experiences the same delays, misinformation, and frustration that we did.
