We somehow got a table directly next to the band and had a wonderful time, let folks come and sit with us, got Guinness with Blackcurrant (which depending on who you ask is WRONG ... I thought it was fun). We had a BBQ buffet dinner that was good with plenty of food. They let us take home our placemats which are maps of Ireland. One of the owners is American, and I was surprised to see JFK Memorabilia in the smaller room. They have antique oil lamps, old firearms and assorted things on display for patrons to muse. This is where the not so young ones go when their feet are sore and they want a bit of space from the dance floor. However, if anyone has come up from the country to Cookstown before, they will probably know the bad part of this story. When it comes to closing time, everybody is literally chucked out onto the streets which results in argy-bargy, thrown chips and a lot of fighting. The pate was light, almost a soft mousse, served with excellent soda style bread, a chutney and side salad. The main sirloin was a thin cut and delightful piece of meat really darn good. It reminded me of the entrecôte served up throughout cafes in France, also known as steak-frites, thin-sliced hanger steak similarly cooked by the French to order. It was served here with a generous portion of chunky chips, pepper sauce and side salad. I asked for champ instead of chips and it was no problem. I'm delighted to say we return here in a few weeks and reserved a table for six.

A chilled, relaxed atmosphere permeates and it's definitely a good place to catch up with friends and chat over a pint. Any time I've visited, which has always been on a Saturday, there's live music playing. A friendly vibe permeates and Mickey Kelly's frequently reminds me of the bar from American sitcom Cheers. It has a laid-back feel and is very popular with locals, so has a solid core of regulars who all know each other. Cocktails are good and beer is excellent. Would recommend.
