I would recommend Zeke to anyone who prefers to get a massage in the comfort of their own home. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the good ol' day spa, but I love the idea of a healing massage at home, so I searched and thankfully, Zeke was the first to pop up. He was so easy to communicate with, professional, responsive and super mellow. I like that he has a mix of techniques to choose from and he intuitively knows what your body needs. For me there was a lot of stretching and clearing of some stuck energy. It's $200 for 70 minutes, which is pretty on par with a spa...and he travels a large radius for clients, so you're in luck. Ya gotta book a little in advance though. As a person who works a desk job (aka has always had chronic neck / shoulder pain), I've had decades of massages. I can 100% say that Zeke is the best. In this COVID world, having Zeke come to my house and provide a 90 minute outdoor backyard session has been the only thing that's kept me sane. It's just pure bliss. I may never prefer an indoor massage again. Just as his website mentions, he's all about improvisation - like good jazz. My second session was nothing like my first. After my first, I felt so energized that I wanted to go for a run. This was the first time I have had a massage in my home and I'll admit I was a little hesitant/nervous. The experience was outstanding in every way. Zeke was prompt, professional, patient, safe and considerate, as a guest/service provider in my home. This was, simply and profoundly, the best massage I have ever experienced. He setup a very comfortable table, heated pad, clean sheets. Perfection in choosing a setup location in front of my woodstove and we both enjoyed the best soundtrack possible (unplanned) of my sweet Great Dane breathing deeply, very sound asleep next to us the whole time. It was amazing! My two rascally kitties popped in and out, but I was in such incredible bliss and so relaxed that their feline shenanigans weren't even a distraction. What a wonderful gift Zeke has. I didn't see Zeke's website before booking my appointment - I just found him on the Yelp app and saw that he works in my neighborhood. Turns out this was a movie I didn't need to preview; I got a better massage, and a different massage, than I was expecting. The word "Esalen" holds a revered, whimsical status among people who live in California who have heard of the place: a haven for yogis/yoginis, for soul searchers, for breathers, meditators, shamans and seekers of holistic vitality. If you like credentials before getting a service, I think Esalen is the Harvard of bodywork. The massage happened in a very small side studio with just enough room to hang your coat, slip behind the sliding screen doors and get into the soft blankets adorning the table bed. After an ill prepared stab at a 5k run on Thanksgiving, I needed a lot of help with pulled muscles and stiffness. I felt like Zeke was removing some sort of exoskeleton and reaching the muscles that needed encouragement, as well as the person inside of me that needed some nurturing. It felt great. read more

From the first time I contacted Zeke, he has been personable and professional, and in general a really great guy. As of the writing of this review, I've been using Zeke's services for about a year. His massage is amazing, and was exactly what I was searching for relative to my personal preferences. Each session is unique based on how I'm feeling that day and what body aches I need addressed. If you want a really deep massage to work out the kinks and knots that you just can't seem to get rid of, Zeke is the man to see! He knew exactly where and how to apply his pressure and his knowledge of sports injuries and how to combat them was so very helpful. I recently went on a 3 day backpacking trip at Desolation WIlderness in Lake Tahoe. We hiked through all sorts of terrain, and I injured my right shoulder trying to climb up a huge wall of granite slab with a 60L pack on. It's been about 3 weeks now, and I haven't been able to workout or sleep comfortably because of the stiffness and sore aches I've been feeling. I decided that seeing a massage therapist would be the best choice to get rid of this pain and found him on Yelp. Through his website I filled out an intake form which allowed me to write a note about my situation, and he wrote back immediately with his thoughts and suggestions. He felt that it may be a rotator cuff trigger point (which I really had no idea what that was, so googled it and agreed). Simply put, you will not get a better massage anywhere. Zeke is absolutely the best. My husband and I have been regular clients of his for about two years now. Before each massage he asks, "How's your body?" and tailors his massage appropriately. His massages are never the same twice as he adjusts each one to his intuitive interpretation of your responses. He is also continuously learning new "moves" so his already excellent technique keeps getting better and better. Unlike many massage therapists I've encountered, Zeke gives an excellent deep massage when that is warranted. Many cannot go deep enough and, even worse, many who try to go deep do it far too fast. Zeke applies deep pressures extremely slowly and even stops completely when intuition tells him to go very deep in a certain spot. I have chronic lower back pain and he always seems to know exactly where to apply that pressure. His intuition about what your body needs and how to address it is unsurpassable. I'm kind of a massage connisoeur. It's my therapy - - both physical and mental - - so I'm picky. Really picky. But as I said to Zeke today, finding him feels like winning the massage lottery. Zeke is a maestro of massage. He's strong and intuitive and calm and for the 90 minutes or so that I'm on his table, I feel nothing but bliss. Technically, he's an expert in various modalities and he can seamlessly move from deep tissue to pressure point to Swedish, using whichever technique is most suited to discovering and working into all the nooks and crannies where pain and tension and stress and trauma hide out in my body and my brain. But his magic isn't his technical skill, it's his ability to hold space in the massage for real and intense release. It's a rare skill and I'm grateful to be the beneficiary of it. read more

I called Zeke very last minute because I was in town only for a short time. I used to live in the Bay Area and expect excellent massage here, which is why I wanted to get some in while here visiting from the Midwest to do some work. He was able to fit me in, and I'm very glad, because this was the best massage I've had in a year. He did some intense and deep work on the piriformis muscle that was bothering me, and was really strong and also very creative. He had some moves that I've never seen before involving stretching and massage at the same time, and I've had a lot of massage. I also appreciated that he worked without talking, because I like to be silent during my massages. A lot of massage therapists advertise sports or deep tissue work as if it were exclusive from or separate from "relaxing" massage, which true hardcore massage people tend to dislike and stay away from. Zeke really does do both--it isn't just rubbing for sure, everything feels purposeful and like it is accomplishing something. I am not a new age person, more a sports massage person, but he did some energy work or something at the end that gave me a really interesting vision-quest like experience, the like of which I've mostly read about but not experienced. I felt full of energy after a 90 minute massage and leapt off the table. If I lived here I would see him every week. He is such a talented guy and so nice as well. His normal rates are reasonable and in line with other practitioners I've seen. I used the crazy-inexpensive Yelp deal he has going for first-time customers: 90 minutes for 90 dollars So I gave it one star based on this deal. Zeke is truly a healer. In my 49 years on this planet and literally 100's of massages I have never experienced a massage like the transformative experience I had with Zeke. From our first communication via email he was professional, kind and responsive. He books up quickly but was able to get me on his schedule as soon as he had availability. He does not book more than one or two massages a day so that he is fully present with each client (and it shows in his work). He confirmed the day before, texted me shortly before arriving and was on time the day of the massage. He set up with nice sheets and a warm full body heating pad underneath. He took the time to "tune into" my body and started with some slow movements and gradually worked into the massage. I appreciated that. I had a tremendous amount of tension and he was able to work out knots in my back and neck. He seemed to intuitively know what my body needed. My deep breathing was almost automatic and I could feel the tension release from my body (I swear it was decades of tension.. ) with each stroke of his skilled hands. He balanced deep work with soft nurturing touch. I had experienced one Esalen massage almost 30 years ago and appreciated those elements as part of the massage. If you haven't had one before it encourages breath work (although he didn't.. I just remembered this.. and knew he wouldn't think I was "weird" for doing my yogic breathing to release the tension .. ) and incorporates an almost "psycho-spiritual" aspect to the massage.. With the right therapist it becomes almost a "dance" of energy. It's hard to explain. I was left transformed. After being in pain for months. I picked up my 3 kids from school that afternoon feeling lighter, happier, and more centered.. as well as feeling grounded. The weekend was joyful and productive. I have been virtually pain free for the last couple of days since the massage. I am looking forward to my next session. What a blessing Zeke is to this world. All I can say is WOW, Zeke is back! A little over five years ago, Zeke disappeared. Just left his business behind. No one- not even his ex wife!- knew what happened to him! How I met Zeke is like this: Around 5 years ago, he was renting a small studio space in Albany, CA, on a street named Evelyn. I happened to live on that street at the time. I got curious, asked him about his work, he shared that he was/is a massage therapist, so I thought, what the heck, this guy is three houses down from where I live, why not try a massage with him? Well, I had a massage. And another, and another. I have gone to many massage therapists before Zeke and gone to many since. Simply put: Zeke is masterful at what he does. He's so good, I would find myself every now and then geek-ing out on how exquisite a particular stroke he did on my body, or a particular way he held my body. I experienced a Zeke massage a couple of months ago and felt compelled to offer a review after reading of another woman's negative experience. Like her, I felt my legs opened during the massage and my chest was included in the areas of my body he worked on. I was not familiar with Esalen massage prior to this appointment and found that this technique was a different experience than other massages I've had. In my experience with Zeke, the inclusion of my chest and stretching movement of my legs did not alarm me in any way. None of it felt sexual. At all times, I felt like I was under the care of an experienced professional. This massage released tightness in my hips and groin allowing me more freedom of movement for running and yoga. He released tightness in my neck and shoulders and followed up the next day with a phone call. I found him to be a very kind, caring, and experienced professional. I wouldn't hesitate to book another massage with this kind, strong, caring masseuse! I really would give Zeke 10 stars if I could. I've had a lot of massages over the years, and this really is the only one that is consistently worth coming back for. Seriously the best masseuse I have ever encountered. He is intuitive, strong, focused and effective. Recently, a neck spasm so bad I couldn't turn my head to one side for days alerted me to the fact that I've been a walking knot of tension, owies, and a fierce inability to relax. I'd seriously stopped feeling human, just... Like my body was surly and constantly shaking its fists at clouds. And he received me with a bright smile, which helped me feel much more at ease so quickly, which is no small feat, I can be kinda chihuahua-like when doing something new... Oh did I mention this was my first pro massage ever?! And it showed, because I couldn't get my brain to stop thinking and my muscles to tense up accordingly, but Zeke and his valiant efforts succeeded and I was soothingly lost in the long strokes, stretches, and kneadings. He was gentle and used his strength wisely, which showed me that he was very present during the massage, not going through motions and thus sticking to one mode/strength. It was like he was reading my body and supplying it with the touch that would help most. It was very nurturing :) And then after he gave me some insight as to how my body was responding to what I'd told him of my life and emailed me links to Kundalini yoga sources, which I'd been considering for a long time! Zeke is terrific! I had a wonderful massage therapist, whom I saw intermittently over a several year period, but he moved away over 10 years ago . Since then I have had many a massage but Zeke is the first massage therapist since then who actually truly understands how one's body works and treats you and your body as an individual with distinct needs, versus giving everyone the exact same massage. As an earlier reviewer mentioned, every massage is different. Zeke is able to skillfully find and work on trigger points for my migraines, as well as determine what is underlying other problems. Often times I have believed that I might need to see a doctor for some joint issue or other problem and Zeke will know what part of my body may be tight and thus contributing to the pain or problem. With Zeke's skillful, intelligent, and intuitive work my body has come a long way toward becoming more balanced. (I must say that as I am aging I have some of those lovely aging aches and pains which always surprise me.) Zeke has been incredibly supportive since I began seeing him about a year ago. Although he is known for deep tissue work, he is very open and willing to work in a lighter manner if that is your need or preference. I've been using Zeke for a long time. I have a handicap and had been hospitalized for months and was extremely weak when I began getting caring, wonderful massages and bodywork from Zeke. I went to see Zeke today and couldn't wait to see him. After a full week of Crossfit workouts at the gym, I was sore in places I wasn't sore in a long time, especially my upper legs as well as my back. He performed stretches which not only allowed to release the tension in my upper legs, but the soreness in the muscles of my inner thighs was gone. The stretches were unbelievable and he opened my legs and stretched my hips which gave me more flexibility. Zeke O'Brien so much more than a massage therapist - he is a healer. I first met Zeke over 10 months ago in an elevator in my assisted living building. I had gone into assisted living due to a deteriorating condition associated with damage to my brain. I was delighted when I saw that Zeke was going to be in Los Angeles again. I have seen Zeke over a period of 15 years, and every time I have a treatment, it is wonderful. Zeke is incredibly personable, and listens to what your body is telling him. The combination of deep tissue pressure and long muscle strokes is like a dance.
