My wife and sister-in-law wanted to try our luck with the new Korean resto in town. It is tucked away in a strip mall plaza across the street from McDonald's within the MegaWorld complex. From the outside walking in, it looks very clean and modern so it's a nice feeling overall. Main floor has quite a few tables and they also have a 2nd floor for lounging and drinks. Their menu has many choices for both individual and combination dishes. Their staff are friendly and very willing to accommodate our appetites. We ordered the SoonDuBu (spicy seafood tofu) soup, TangSuYuk, (Korean style sweet and sour pork), half-sized Yangnyum chicken (marinated in soy sauce, honey, garlic, pears and green onion then sprinkled with sesame seeds), and HweDupBap (Salmon sashimi on a bed of vegetables and rice). The appetizer dishes came out right away - small amounts but enough before our order arrived. Sounds good right? So this is where they failed: SoonDuBu was just ok. Nothing stellar but I was pleased that it had a good amount of substance in it. The TangSuYuk lacked the sweet and sour flavour I was looking for. After a few bites, you just keep chewing on more chicken and deep fried batter. The same went for the Yangnyum chicken as the spice sort of overrides the entire dish. But the biggest disappointment of all was the HweDupBap. Normally this dish is served with cold and freshly cut slices of sashimi. How would you feel if it was served frozen? We had to return it to have it cooked because there was no way we would continue eating FROZEN sashimi. Then eating pan fried sashimi when it was meant to be served fresh and not frozen (or defrosted for that matter) was an even bigger disappointment. At the end of the meal, the owner kept swatting at flies with his "electric tennis racket". We will not be coming back any time soon.

During the cruise, there is entertainment such live music and dance performances. When I went, the buffet offered a variety of Filipino dishes, including pancit, vegetable Kare Kare and Filipino bbq. There were also several Filipino desserts and complimentary juice, while other drinks such as soda could purchased for an additional fee. While I appreciated the variety of food, I found the flavors to be fairly mild. More than the food, it was the atmosphere and experience that made this cruise memorable. I really enjoyed the scenic river ride and seeing all the lush greenery and tropical vegetation. I also liked the live entertainment. The local music and traditional dance performances were impressive and fun to watch. Some of us tourists even joined in the fun Filipino Tinikling dance. Overall, the Loboc Riverwatch Floating Restaurant was definitely an hour well spent. Also, several of Gerry T's buddies during high school were, you guessed it - Korean. So I ate more Kim chi, bulgogi, home made mandoo, chapchae, all those weird soups and the stuff fermenting in jars. So I say all that to say that I have above average experience with Korean food. So this is a solid 4 stars, they keep the ban Chan coming and the fluffy omelet is very soft. The seafood soup is boiling hot and plentiful. The bi/bim/bop with bulgogi in a bowl (veggies with beef) with somewhat of a poached egg is so comforting. This was my go-to during college, not cup of noodles. Finally, The seafood pancake, what can I say but Cam Sam Nida (thank you)!! That is excellent, along with the grilled pork with garlic. There's a nice view of the river and there seems to be a lot of people at lunch time, here at Kang Byeon.

We'd like to give this food a 3 or 4 star rating, but after returning to check it out again,…read moredowngraded to a 2! The locals don't seem to know good Koreano food, but after living in other parts of Asia and North America, it's just not good at all. The 4 pre-meal appetizers were fewer than normal (6-7), but were okay. Their homemade kimchi was good enough although on the hot side, and the Korean egg slices were just passable. From then the rest drops off a cliff win their garlic peanuts, tiny deep-fried fish, and sweet potato chunks. Not that good. First time ordered dolsot bibimbap and spicy squid with glass noodles: we were quite satisfied with overall flavour, quantity, and the price was more or less right compared to other Koreano restaurants. Downsides... 1. The bibimbap. This good mostly-veggie dish can either be served cold or hot, but the thick pot this meal was placed in could scorch our skin 15 minutes after it was served. When we told the owner, she tried to explain it away in broken English rather than simply apologize and tell us she'll adjust the temperature, so that it doesn't continue to scald the contents and my fingers until my hunger finally emptied it. 2. The spoiled little children running around the place or screaming for 15 minutes without being corrected. It's a large open room, and certainly not suited to that. 3. The building is somewhat dumpy, but the river flows quietly beside the back of the restaurant. Looking out onto the wide back patio, it's easy to see that it would be well suited to having about 5 or 6 sizable 4-6 seater tables outside but it was a dirty mess back there. When it is daytime, it must be unsightly to the backwall tables. But it has potential, and would be an upgrade to this venue. Oh well... Second time we ordered fried dumplings and what looked like and tasted like jap chae with glass noodles but came with another name. Downsides... 1. the dumplings were overcooked and bathed in so much oil that afterwards our stomaches felt slightly uncomfortable. Age and quality of the oil, or just too much? 2. the 'jap chae' was a small portion, greasy and short on veggies, but tasted okay. 3. at least no noisy kids running around this time. We've been spoiled by much better Korean fare in other parts of Asia and Canada, and therefore have a standard to compare this to. But it's only on a par with 'overcook it before it revives' Kogi & Vegi and the other poor venues in Iloilo. Chodam seems the best but it too is inferior. Kang Byun. The Koreana owner smiles welcome quite enthusiatically, but by what the kitchen is putting out, she's no cook nor is she supervising, because the over-cooked greasy food is typical of poorly-trained unshepherded filipinos. Situated in the somewhat gloomy marginally-serviceable spartan student dorm-inn Riverside Hotel, and this place and the food is well-suited to that assessment. We do not recommend this place unless you are okay with what is stated here. Go to Chodam for slightly better Korean, or run over quickly to Troi Oi for excellent Vietnamese soups, stews and other delicious dishes. But forget this place!

Upon reading some reviews, I called to confirm their promotion where a birthday celebrant is complimentary. I called and advised that the birthday celebrant's birthday will be the following day but intend to celebrate it the day before. The man stated that as long as there were atleast 2 paying adults per 1 birthday celebrant, then indeed, they were complimentary. I asked to reconfirm and he stated, "yes, birthday month is ok". So off we went. I also notice that there was a 10% discount for checking in using yelp. We arrived at about 6:30 pm. I advised I called earlier on the day regarding the birthday promo and said the birthday girl was with us in tow. 5 adults in total. She then said oh there needs to be 6 of you for the birthday celebrant to be free. I said thats not what I was told earlier. So she went to ask some other male receptionist as I stated I spoke with a man earlier. Long story short, There was only 5 of us so depsite the wrong info, everyone was charged including the birthday girl. I then showed them the yelp check in promo then they stated it was expired. By then I was like what in the %$*!! Anyway at 740 per person weekday dinner, paying for one other person was not gonna break the bank. It was just disappointing that one has to mislead the public in order for people to eat here. They asked for the birthday girl's i.d., which we gave, and she still had to pay. *womp womp* What was the point of asking for her identification if you still weren't going to honor your promo. Now on to the food. Variety was way better than most other buffets in Cebu that I've tried. They had a mix of Filipino, Korean, Chinese, but mostly Japanese offerings. Everything I tasted was hot and flavorful. We opted to do hot pot but realized there was what they call a "mookata" (a heating utensil to cook both hotpot and yakiniku at the same time). Sadly, we only found out about the mookata at the end of the meal while sitting around trying to decide if we were gonna have another go at it. They also had a good selection of desserts that included my favorite, bread pudding. Their bread pudding was moist but lacked the custom bourbon or whisky sauce. It did have sauce though, just not sure what kind. The sushi had a different taste than what I've grown accustomed to. They added some kind of mushroom or something in one of their maki rolls. Haven't had that before (tasted strange). Their hot pot broth (we chose chicken) was seasoned a little salty but didn't mind it since we had veggies in there. Charge included drinks (even unlimited refills of San Miguel Beer, on tap) We asked for hot green tea, but stated it will be an additional 60 pesos added to the buffet price, but that you may have unlimited refills. I noticed at about 8:30ish the staff started putting up dinnerware. I thought they closed at 10 pm. *shrugs* I find it rude to be doing this while many patrons are still dining. Strange etiquette indeed. Despite the annoyance in the beginning, food quality was pretty good and even rivaled with hotel buffets. Should you need to call them, I advise to ask for the person's name of whom you spoke with before hanging up to avoid a similar situation I endured. However, Jennabeth (receptionist lady) was very professional and warm. She was apologetic at the end. (Thank you for that, Jennabeth!) Restroom stalls are super tiny in the lady's room. So just an fyi if your used to Texas standard size restroom stalls. They also had only one sink. Are we to wait in line whilst someone is doing there makeup in front of said sink?!? *rolls eyes* Free wifi, ask a waiter or waitress for the password. 20 pesos was charged for parking as you leave City Time Square.

Today was the day I decided to take a break, and decided to go to Tokyo Table in Tipolo, Mandaue City, Cebu City. It's a bit far from Cebu City, but if your in the area and looking for clean, pleasant place to have a nice meal with professional service this is the place. The presentation gives an aura of quality and the ambiance is very pleasant. The cuisine is primarily Japanese and is buffet style but they also offer the ability to barbecue your food, as well as Chinese Dim Sum dishes and the ability to make you own Vietnamese soup noodle dish called Pho. I have also head that they do not use MSG in their cooking since I am not fond of its use and despite that the food is still delicious in IMHO. During lunch hours, the dessert selection is limited to ice cream, halox2, and taho. But dinner time is when you get the full selection which includes creme brulee. Its a welcome sight to have a place like this in this part of town. If you are in the area, and are in the mood for asian cuisine specializing in Japanese.. definitely add this place to the list.
