Our son has been attending this high school for two years and we can't say enough great things…read moreabout Newbury Park Adventist Academy. If you looking for a school where you child can be a big fish in a little pond then look no further. There are approximately 35 kids in each grade. Excellent individual attention in a Christian environment. Kids are kind and accepting and lift each other up. Teachers are available everyday after school to work with the kids and to ensure their success. We could have been happier to discover this great gem in Newbury Park, Thousand Oaks.

Rated year after year by Ventura county parents as the worst private school in Southern California…read more 1. Constant staff turnover - Currently the principal, treasurer, and athletic director tenured their resignations for the end of the school year and there are no replacements lined up to fill the vacancies. The teacher lined up to be the new science instructor decided not to take the job so a volunteer parent will continue teaching the class for the third year. This is par for the course since the soccer, baseball, and track teams are all coached by parents and not the athletic director. 2. The school only hires Adventist teachers so even if the most qualified candidate is a devout Christian they are barred from working at the school because they are not of the Adventist faith. 3. The state of the building is in disrepair. Ventura County Health Dept reports show constant rodent and feces infestations. (I have linked the health inspection reports below) Even worse is the staff housing located directly behind Home Depot. The homes are in such poor condition the health department was forced to perform a surprise inspection last summer due to an open sewer running out of one of the homes carrying urine and feces into the front yard. If you are considering the Academy I encourage you to tour the staff housing behind Home Depot. 4. The school is often used as a "dumping ground" for troubled students expelled from other public and private schools. In 2026, a student called in violent threats against staff and students necessitating police intervention. Below is the e-mail to parents from the principal about the threat. "Dear NPAA Families, I learned early this morning that several parents have heard via police scanner about a student who has threatened NPAA's physical plant. This threat therefore involves student and staff safety. Of course, this incident is alarming, and their concern is understandable. However, since rumors fly quickly -- and change in shape and detail and intensity as they travel -- I want to inform the NPAA community what is happening so as to prevent the rumors from worsening. First of all, and most important for the safety of students and staff, I asked the student's parents to keep their student at home until further notice. They have agreed to do so, starting today. In the mean time, I have stayed in touch with local law enforcement. Yesterday afternoon I sat with deputies from the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. I have a case number that I can use to update authorities on developments. NPAA administration have notified the school's governing body, the Southern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, of these developments, and we are in constant contact with officials there. Again, the student's family will keep the student home until further notice. The family will continue their work with a team of professionals who follow the student's progress daily. If you have any questions, you may reply to this email. Yours sincerely, Joel Albritton ('88) Principal / English 12 " All items mentioned above are accurate and can be verified by the school itself. Of course common core isn't their fault, because it's this dumb state. But they REALLY dove into it and chose the worst principals to teach. 2) The majority of teachers were extremely fake and only responded to bribes, otherwise your kids never made it to their "favorites." The only 2 teachers who really ever cared were Mrs. Guevara and Mrs. Hise (who I might note were a part of the old administration). 3) The administration went out of their way to sweep any bullying by kids under the rug and had a policy that the kids should walk away from bullies instead of reporting. In most cases the administration basically protected the bullies and facilitated their continued terrible behavior. When the bullies kids attempted to report any bullies to the teachers, the teachers would get defensive and cause problems for parents out of spite. 4) Beware if you are divorced parents. Over the years, I've come across enough divorced parents to know that they picked a parent to side with and went out of their way to make the other parent's life miserable. The parent who brought bribes, and who volunteered, gave and received gifts from the staff continuously. Butt licking like that only exists among dogs. Just warning ya, stay away. Not worth the stress. (And sure enough, their 10 star score on greatschools.org is now a 9. Wonder how long it takes before they keep dropping further. Probably won't take too long under this idiotic fake administration. Now Yelp thinks that my review shouldn't count. And why? I was a parent of kids (not 1, but 2) who went to that horrible excuse for a school.

He's made certain statements to my daughter saying in front of the classroom, "Nobody is on your side, if you make a complaint everyone will be on my side." Then proceeds to ask the classroom to raise their hand if they will tell on him. My daughter then proceeds to say they are all afraid of him and he will punish them by giving them more work if they do tell on him. My daughter asks to use the restroom and he does not allow her. When she is cold and wants to go to her locker to get her jacket, he tells her, " oh well, I guess you'll be cold then." There have even been several other incidents weekly. This person does not need to teach or be around students. We have had a parent teacher conference meeting with the assistant principal & two other teachers and his attitude toward the kids have been addressed, but no change has been made. If you get Mr. Burns, IMMEDIATELY request to switch out, He gives so much unnecessary work, and if you have a question, he just doesn't answer it. Also, the assemblies are most of the time boring and unnecessary, and the lunch is alright, but kids keep putting random shit in the water fountains. Some teachers are cool though. Overall 2/10 Oh also, If you're not athletic, The runs will be torture.

The school has a strong academic focus, but also places a strong emphasis on children's emotional and social development. The smaller class sizes are ideal and the CAES community is like a family. CAES…read moreis small enough that your children get very personal attention from their teachers but big enough that the social scene is diverse. Though the academics are current (Common Core-based), the teachers all practice "differentiated instruction," meaning they tailor their teaching to the different learning styles of each student. The school is like a big family with so many great parents, an active PTO, a devoted and caring school board, and fantastic faculty and staff who sacrifice early mornings and late nights to be sure our kids get the best possible whole-person education. My only complaints would be that (1) they don't have a cafeteria (though they do offer a "hot lunch" by way of fast food or class-sponsored meals), and (2) I'd like the school to have enough students that each grade would have its own classroom, rather than two-grade rooms (K-2 are single, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 are double). So, it's not PERFECT, but it's the BEST. And the more the kids that enroll, the better it'll get.
