This store is bright and fresh and the women who run it are wonderful teachers! I have struggled with sewing my whole life, from being unable to finish my pillow in high school home economics to having heart palpitations getting anywhere near a sewing machine. I had the pleasure of attending a class with Brittany today on Sewing Machine Basics and wouldn't you know it I walked out of there today with a finished pillow case.... with French seams no less! Brittany starts off her class simply by running down the lingo of the sewing machine aka what is the foot, what do those weird markings on your machine mean, and how on earth do you follow the instructions for threading the machine. She also had me "practice" sewing straight lines (without thread) which made getting the idea of sewing and the muscle memory much easier. She also had a cool handout to practice sewing corners as well. Once you run through both of those beginner tasks she has you pick out fabric for your task. She cuts it and irons it, explains how to pin, and lets you at the machine. At this point she lets you do your thing and ask her if you have questions. I'm sure this varies by skill level, but I found it super helpful to try and to make my own mistakes. In addition to the finished product I now actually understand my normal mistakes... aka turning that wheel on the side away from myself- a mistake I continue to make over and over again. Sew Hip and the wonderful women there have me excited about actually knowing 1) how to thread a machine, 2) knowing how to wind a bobbin, and 3) being able to sew in a straight line. I'm not 100% sure I want to invest in a sewing machine at this point but that's the beauty of Sew Hip- you can pay for "studio time" to sew using one of their machines. This is a brilliant business model. Holiday tip: Fridays and Saturdays in December 2017 they are doing a gift making class from 11am-1pm. $25 for studio time and supplies. Such a fun store. I went in because I needed a seam ripper, and the lady who worked there immediately found it for me. I say it's fun though, because looked liked there were tons of events and classes held there. This is a great little sewing shop in Gig Harbor! I have twins taking private sewing lessons and they both say the instructors are encouraging and helpful! They get to bring home what they make during their two hour lesson, and you call tell how proud they are of their projects. I highly recommend this store. They made custom UW pillowcases for their brother's birthday and they look wonderful! read more

I recently came here with my friend, and found it to be what I view as a paradise for people who enjoy sewing, because this place has anything and everything you could possibly need to get started. Now, I am not a sewer, but on my recent visit, I had a lot of questions about it. Thankfully, co-owner Britt, was ready for my noob questions. Not only was she incredibly patient, but she was extremely knowledgeable. She came across as genuinely passionate for what she does In addition to running the store, they also teach workshops for sewers of all ages and ability levels. In fact, my friend is a beginning sewer who has been attending class on Saturdays, and has already begun putting together beautiful clothes for herself. I just took the beginner sewing class. It's amazing, welcoming and extremely informative! The sisters are very helpful and wonderful to work with. The shop is small but clean, loads of adorable fabrics, and all the needs to get you started on your sewing adventure. Some of the other ladies in my class are repeat customers, which speaks volumes about a teacher (teachers). You can also rent a sewing space by the hour. I just stepped into a wonderful turn of fortune! I like to sew apparel and most of what is left in Tucson is quilt and craft. This new store is a godsend. I am taking a one up from basic sewing class in August. Britanny was kind enough to schedule a class for me on a weekday (Friday) since I have obligations every other Saturday. I am going to make a very simple yet attractive knit dress in the class. I have trouble with fitting and can do only a small part of what I need due to middle age creep. The store is quite pretty and stocks some great cottons, knits and linens. Two sisters own it, can you imagine? What a great adventure and one I hope to help along in my own little way. I also got a very simple yet attractive (hard to find) pattern for a top that I can make out of all the cotton I have on the shelf. I am so jazzed, ready to get at it! read more

This is absolutely my new happy place (coming in a close second behind a library). I signed up for sewing 101 having not taken a sewing class in more years than I care to talk about. What an amazing experience. Kristen and Brittney (I apologize for any misspellings). They are knowledgeable, patient, and really just the nicest women. And let me not forget Jane who assisted with some of the classes as well. She's also a superstar. They have a lovely selection of fabrics and notions. They offer a wide variety of classes, as well as private lessons. They offer kids programs also. I wish my nieces lived closer, because they'd be going. I only wish I hadn't put off taking this class. It's a wonderful experience to be taught by someone who have such a passion about what they do. If you always wanted to learn to sew, need a refresher course, or just want to improve your skills, I can not recommend this store highly enough. Just go. You'll thank me later. read more

What an amazing find! I took several classes here, including Sewing Machine Basics and Sewing 101, and was exceptionally pleased with both the instruction and the finished projects. The two sisters that own the shop are friendly, extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. They explained things very clearly and were great at helping their students and other clientele find the right tools and methods for accomplishing their goals. This is fine, nicely decorated little sewing shop in the heart of Tucson. The owner/manager is a very friendly, helpful person. They offer classes for people at different levels of sewing ability. What I was looking for was fabric. Since Hancocks closed here in Tucson I haven't been able to find a really good place for fabric with variety, quality, and a pleasant atmosphere in which to shop. There's a limited selection of fabric but very high-quality. It's a bit pricey but worth it! It's nice to have this sweet little place in Tucson. read more

This is a wonderful creative space run by sisters. They offer both sewing classes and drop in times. I took the Sewing Machine Basics and was very impressed by their warmth, knowledge and teaching style. Each step was clearly explained and demonstrated and then students did practice tests along with ultimately creating a pillowcase for a travel pillow using 3 different fabrics - body, edging and trim. We learned how to thread the machine, how to adjust settings, to sew straight seams, turn corners, line up fabric and pin, back stitch and make French seams. All in all, very beneficial and I have already signed up for more. read more
