This was a somewhat spur of the moment activity and my appointment was made late Saturday for the following Wednesday. I booked two hour long massages for my friend and I. Parking instructions were clearly given and accurate. We arrived about 20 minutes early, our choice, and relaxed and had water and a complementary snack. We were checked on frequently. Our masseuses greeted us and led us upstairs.( not sure what happens if you cannot climb stairs?) Explained their routine, heated tables and add ons like aromatherapy and back scrub/moisturizer Some small talk but then we settled down to massage. Good hands, pressure and technique. The room was a bit bright but that's about all the bad I could say. We relaxed for a bit in the waiting room and were not hurried. It was near the end of their day and we asked if we could leave the car in the parking lot for our visit and the receptionist said no problem. I received a gift card from my husband for Christmas a few years ago. After using it for an hour Swedish massage, 30 min back and neck massage and manicure, I will not be returning. I wanted a deep tissue massage but was told I had to do Swedish for my first visit. It was barely any pressure and I left feeling like I didn't really have a massage. The half for back and neck deknotter was a little better but I still listened to comments from the massage therapist about how weird my spine was shaped. Finally, the manicure was okay, but the polish chipped in less than one day--for a gel manicure. I also was surprised that I couldn't use the gift card for tip either. The spa is in a renovated Victorian home and the vibe was actually better than I thought. I still won't be going back after 3 mediocre at best experiences. read more

I have accumulated a bit of a pile of gift cards to the spa because my family was somehow under the assumption I like massages. This is not correct, I do not like them. So they have piled up for a while and finally, after discussing with a friend, it was recommended I do a facial. The spa is calm, welcoming, with soft music and hot beverages when you walk in. They take your coat and lead you upstairs to a room with a warm table. They do a skin evaluation, check for allergies, then begin the process. I was so relaxed! It was a great experience and I'm excited to go back. My skin is really soft which is a treat in this polar vortex. The only thing to be wary of is the steps- not sure if they have an elevator inside or not, but they're otherwise steep farmhouse steps. read more

I had a great massage experience at The Sewickley Spa! My bachelorette party was hosted here and we couldn't have had a better experience. They allowed a group of 15 girls to come and gave us a private room to hang out in during the day. We were able to decorate, play games and bring in our own food & mimosas. They organized what services were available throughout the day so that everyone could receive one. Of course as a group we had some changes on the day of, they were more than accommodating. As for my massage (and my first prenatal massage), it was amazing. The room was so relaxing, my therapist was very talented and checked in during the massage to make sure everything was okay. The Sewickley Spa is an ultimate experience. From the greeting as you walk in the door, it is a genuine pleasure to be there. My son bought a package which included a facial massage, full massage, pedicure and manicure. Each stage was fantastic with very professional and friendly staff. The only downside was make sure you feed the meter. I didn't realize that I was parked in a metered area. For the first time visitor that should be mentioned. Each time I planned a trip to this spa, I have been so excited. Unfortunately, the services I received do not match the price tag. This spa has been able to raise their prices due to their location, but their technicians have been trained to go by a method that is unfulfilling and eventually, ineffective. My appointments both included a massage, and through request, I had ordered deep tissue. This was hardly the service I received. I had to continually ask for more pressure, and it was as if the technicians didn't know where muscle tissue was. Both appointments were disappointing. read more

Very disappointing experience. I used a gift card for a service but my credit card was charged. When I called to have this fixed, the receptionist never once apologized, but instead gave me a long excuse about the fact that the person who checked me out had my credit card in one hand and the gift card in the other and apparently got them mixed up. I guess that was supposed to make me feel much better than a simple "I'm sorry." While I was waiting for the situation to be straightened out, I listened to an on-hold message stating that all guests are greeted with instructions about parking out back. No one had given me those instructions. I parked out front and got a ticket, having not seen any parking meters. The person with whom I was speaking again couldn't be bothered to apologize, but instead he informed me that this was stated clearly on the website. Well! I'm guess she put me in my place. This place has been around since the beginning of the Spa craze! It's in an old Victorian house which is cool. I wouldn't say the place is very "Zen" and calming but it's clean and pretty and Laura, who did my mani-pedi was EXCELLENT! She's detail oriented and neat. I enjoyed our conversation and my nails look great! Maybe there's more of a zen feel in the treatment rooms, I'm not sure. Overall very happy! read more

Given the Sewickley Spa's stellar reputation, I expected an outstanding spa day. I had won a $100 gift certificate from a local newspaper contest and was considering indulging in a hot stone massage. I'd never had one before, so, after carefully reading the spa's description of the massage and being convinced by a few friends who had experienced this type of massage at other spas, I made my appointment for my annual birthday massage in early October, 2012. When I go for a massage, I like to have the whole spa experience of changing into a cozy robe and slippers and relaxing with a cup of tea before and/or after my treatment. Check and check. It was just the middle part that I wasn't thrilled with. My therapist (whose name I can't remember, but she was a women perhaps in her late 40's or early 50's) led me to my massage room, which let in too much outside light, despite the blinds being drawn and was quite chilly, since it was a large room designed for couple's massages. She confirmed that I chose the hot stone massage and told me there was no muscle manipulation with that massage, just the placement of hot stones on certain points of my body. I was confused. I've never had a hot stone massage before, but I was sure their brochure lead me to believe the hot stone placement would be in addition to a traditional Swedish massage. Not wanting to be completely disappointed, I asked if I could "downgrade" to a Swedish massage instead and she said of course, and that she wanted to make sure I was satisfied. Well, I was not. My entire massage just felt like having lotion gently rubbed on me for an hour. I know massage therapists often tell clients to speak up if the pressure is too intense, but the idea of asking her to rub me harder just seemed weird. Plus, I figured my massage was free, so it was better than nothing. I definitely did not walk away with that "ahhhh" feeling one expects after spending a morning at a spa. To conclude, a chilly and too-bright massage room, plus a lackluster and overpriced massage means that I won't be going back. Not even to spend the remaining $20 of my gift certificate. read more

Had a great massage and would go back in a heartbeat (if someone else paid for it). The technician (can't remember her name) did a great job and I definitely left more relaxed. My criticism is of the changing/ waiting room situation. You have to change and then go out into common area to the waiting room which felt more like a salon than spa. There were refreshments, etc., but there were many people in there (men and women) and you could hear conversations from the nail and reception areas. I prefer something that is darker and more secluded feeling. I just couldn't even begin to decompress in there. I've been to other spas where the waiting area was part of the "spa experience"- not the case for me at Sewickley Spa. I expected that in Sewickley, paying Sewickley prices, that the experience would have been more high-end from start to finish. read more

Christine was fantastic and was thorough in explaining the different massage and facial treatments. The whole staff was friendly and welcoming. Went here for the first time today. This place is so pretty and relaxing. The staff are extremely friendly and polite. I checked in and was led to the changing room, where they had thick comfy robes and slippers to out on. I put my clothes into the garment bag and then went to the waiting area. There was an assortment of cookies, tea, lemon water, as well as a choice of juices. My massage therapist was very nice amd did a great job! I've never felt more relaxed! I got the pregnancy massage and de-knotting massage. He made sure to ask if the pressure was okay, my main problem areas, etc. My overall session was 90 minutes and he definitely used each minute to make sure each problem area for me was taken care of. I immediately booked another appointment when my massage was done! I absolutely love this place and would recommend it to anyone looking for a clean, professional l, and charming spa. Terrible experience! I had Sewickley Spa on my must-try list for a loooong time and I was excited to find a moment to schedule a hot stone massage there. I informed the receptionist of my particulars - heating mat as I am ALWAYS cold on the table summer or winter, dark room for relaxation. She warned me that they charge customers 50% of the service if you are late so I made sure to leave very early for the location with the hope to relax in the waiting area with the aforementioned water and snacks prior to the massage. I assumed the place was in a nice soothing secluded location given the picture of the home-converted to spa style picture on the yelp website. This was NOT the case. When I rolled up to the address I was in bumper to bumper downtown traffic with lots of people out on the sidewalk malingering around. No easy or free street parking in sight. I called the front desk and they lead me to the free parking area for the spa behind the establishment - thank goodness. Unfortunately, my early arrival led me to a waiting area packed with people - every seat but one was taken. Again not very relaxing to be sitting with a bunch of strangers in your robe. The room was adjacent to the nail salon area and the racket made by both patrons and staff coming in to join the conversation was loud and disturbing. NOT a relaxing a place at all. I asked if there was an alternative location for quiet time to decompress before my massage and did not receive any options. I asked them to bring my purse back so I could sit in my car for at least some quiet time before my appt. Also FYI one of the things I love to do is read fashion magazines at the spa in between treatments. This place does not invest in this type of magazine - there was one Self which I had read already. This lack of variety was shocking. I asked if there was an alternative place for other magazines to peruse and was led to one other area with just more copies of the same old non-fashion magazine. Yet another - minor - but annoying issue that detracted from the spa experience. So off to my car I went and waited until 10 minutes before my appt time - after all I didn't want to be late. However, my massage therapist definitely did not have the same attention to punctuality. He came 8 minutes after the start of my appt and I informed him of this and reminded him that I wanted the full service that I was being charged. He initially stated we had started "right on time" but I showed him the time on my cell phone and he realized the mistake and blamed his previous client for running late. He did provide an excellent massage though he did not have the heating mat on as I requested with the receptionist and I was cold for 80% of the treatment time - again not relaxing. He did provide the full amount of time for my appt which I appreciated as it was NOT my fault if other clients were not penalized for being late when I made every effort to be professional and punctual. He had an excellent technique and if not for all of the other issues that spoiled my experience I would have gone back. He also brought in a space warmer to help warm the room to keep me more comfortable since I was freezing on the table. At check out the receptionist did not ask how my experience was just took my credit card and proceeded to charge me for my service. Pathetic. She likely already knew that this was a very poor experience for me and did not want to find out more details, I considered talking to a manager about the poor service, but in that moment I was happier just to leave and never come back here again. read more

Went to the spa for a mother daughter day!! We purchased the Bliss package. We arrived on time and was greeted quickly and with a smile. We were shown to a changing room to put our clothes and shoes in a garment bag and but on a long plush robe. Sat in the waiting area. They had tea, mini muffins, trail mix available. We were taken upstairs to our rooms. I had the facial first. She did a nice job in explaining what she was doing. For my daughter she didn't explain anything and did not do anything on her upper chest. My massage was ok. It felt like she was just rubbing lotion on me. Did not work out any knots. My daughter had a guy and he started at her feet. Never had a massage start that way plus he wore gloves. And her room was freezing. She did say something and he just said " yeah this room is cold". Their website says to plan to be there for 2.5 hours... we were done just short of 2!! When done they bring out your clothes from the back room and they were cold when we put them on. Not good after getting all relaxed!! The up side of the day was when we mentioned a service that was listed on the website that we didn't get, they gave us each a $50 gift card ( we used a spa finder gift card for payment so she couldn't give us cash back. ). May use the $50 on a mani/pedi in the spring. Hopefully that will be done well. read more

My husband and I received a couples massage today with Fred and Melissa. When we returned home and undressed, we both have large red welts on our skin everywhere and can only attribute them to being massaged by both therapists wearing gloves. We each have had over 50 massages in the past and have never experienced this reaction before. I think that we should have been told when I made the Appt or when we arrived that this was the practice and we should have been given the opportunity to decline the services. I was also surprised when finalizing the bill, there was a $5 upgrade charge to each of us for aromatherapy. We have had essential oils at other spas but were never charged separately for them. The only suggestion I would make is that the massage gel used was cold and startling when applied. Every other spa we've been to have always warmed the gel. We will not be returning to your spa to use the balance from our gift certificate and ask that you use it towards a gel warmer for your future clients. read more

Mt appointment was a disaster. I was scheduled for an arch and a lip wax. The aesthetician did not evenly shape my eyebrows and made them even worse when I pointed out her mistake. I now have a large bald spot in the middle of my left brow and will have to fill it in with make-up until it grows back. In addition, she failed to wax a lot of dark hairs on my upper lip. To make matters even worse, she spilled wax on my sweater. The room was so dark and I was so upset over my uneven brows that I didn't notice until I had left. My advice is to stay away from the Sewickley Spa. read more

My sister and both received gift cards each for one of the packages which included a massage as well as a facial and some other small services. An hour prior to our appointment we received a call that they had to cancel because of a employee emergency. After contacting the manager we were given our services at a discounted rate, but we're unable to reschedule our appointment until 2 months later because of their schedule. The facial was pretty good but both our massages left something to be desired. We had additional funds on our gift cards because of the cancellation of our 1st visit so we made another appointment to have a manicures and pedicures for the upcoming holiday. The pedicure was just ok I've had better and I found it to be very expensive for it being on par for something I can pay $25 for in a local salon there was just nothing special or spa like about it. We both decided to do the Shellac manicure. The technicians were both young and seemed "new" and were openly discussing that they had just learned how to apply Shellac and it showed! We left looking as if a child had done our nails. I spent my evening attempting to remove the polish completely because it was done so poorly. I contacted the owner by email to express my grievance and she expressed her apologies as well as a promise to provide additional training to the technicians on the application of the Shellac polish. We were also each appeased with a $50 gift card for the inconvenience. We have yet to return to redeem the gift cards and I'm not sure we'll be back even with a gift card to use. I booked the divine day package. Horrible experience with Christine as my masseuse and facial tech. It felt like she didn't know and didn't care where muscles were. There was no rhyme or reason to her movements and they were fast and jerky the whole time. When she first started I asked for more pressure, but that doesn't mean it has to be rough. My body was moving on the table because she was so jerky, which in return made the wooden table creak, not relaxing to say the least. Maybe some people would enjoy that but I prefer a more fluid movement with a purpose. When I laid on my stomach I had to request a bolster for under my ankles, anywhere else it's a given. Once she put it there for me I tried to adjust it a little bit with my foot (to make it even) and she said "do you want it closer or what?" Not really how you talk to someone you're trying to help relax. The head rest was lose and covered by a scratchy hand towel she wrapped around the circle. There were hard chunks on the blanket, which to me meant dried up lotion, meaning the blanket hadn't been washed. Under the table, through my scratchy head hole was a dirty towel and a tablet with head phones. Ok, but not really setting the tranquil ambience. Then again who cares at this point I just couldn't wait to be done. Then there was the facial, now I don't have as much experience to compare this too, but it just felt like she washed my face about 7 times. With the first hot towel she put around my face though, she shook it to let out some heat, but what she was unaware of is that she was shaking it right over my face, which meant I was getting sprayed with water. It startled me and made me jerk. Again I got "what." I said "it's spraying me in the face." She said "oh." When I got up and got my robe I looked at my phone to check the time, it was 1:55. Massage was to be from 12-1 and facial from 1-2. Considering we started 10 minutes late and finished at least 5 minutes early, I got jipped about 15 minutes somewhere along the line, but again who cares, glad it was over. Now that I was out of there I was off to get a pedicure and manicure. I assumed I'd get dressed first, since I'm naked under the robe and the nail section isn't exactly private and who wants to be lifting there legs up and down for a pedicure with the tech at your knees and the fear of the robe gaping open. She told me to have a seat and I asked to get dressed. After all, I wore appropriate pants and shoes to get a pedicure in. The tech, philomena, was fine, but the chair was awful. Hard as a rock and made more noise then actual massage movements. Before I left i told the receptionist about my experience with Christine and that was the worst massage I'd ever had, she apologized and gave me a $25 gift certificate. $25, I just paid $289. But the second time i went back to purchase a gift certificate for a friends mom, the receptionist hit on my boyfriend and thought he was my brother. I don't understand the less than great reviews regarding massages at the Sewickley. My massages have always been great with Fred and Haley. Yes, there have been times when I get a deep tissue massage...and I ask for more pressure and there has never been an issue. A massage still requires communications. "Soft pressure" to someone is "hard pressure" to another... The atmosphere is great and so is the staff. I will be going back. read more

I've never had an issue using gift cards, in fact my family knows to get them for me for special occasions. The staff is skilled and customer service oriented. I had three gift certificates totaling $225 that a person gave me who I do business with. I am not a fan of massages, so I went today to get some products, as I had done years ago with certificates from the same person. Since it had been two years since I was there, I looked over their website pertaining to gift certificates carefully, which said services or products qualified. When I entered, I told the receptionist I had certificates and wanted to get some products, and she told me to look around. Thirty minutes later, after pondering what all to get, I handed her the products I chose and the cards, to which she then replied they were applicable for services only. I told her we had traveled over an hour to get there and had spent time there for nothing, but there was no apology or compassion. I had my elderly mother, my daughter and her 6 month old baby with me for this excursion that we had to plan because it was so far from home. Either the website is deceivingly worded or the girl at the desk had no clue. We have a business of our own and never would have handled it that way. People can use their certificates for service or merchandise. I will spread the word whenever I can. read more
