Self confessed hair snob here. I almost never go to the same stylist twice because, alas, I am difficult to please. I had a sweet stylist at Redhead Salon give me a lovely pixie last August, but I didn't like the way it grew out. I went back to Yelp to search yet again for the holy grail of hair cutteries. "What the hell" I said "let's try Sha La La". It's far from home (takes me almost an hour to get there), but I will travel serious miles for exceptional hair. And health care - but whatever. Moving on: Sweet, delicious baby Jesus I found my holy grail of hair joy. Dice-K is a hair artist, people. Poor man, I force him to tell me stories about his life in Tokyo and Paris and New York but he refuses to become distracted. My first cut took an hour. An hour. Dice was great. Very nice, obviously experienced, and dedicated to what he does... About a year ago I got the ombre coloring done at another popular ft lauderdale salon. Well the stylist there completely ruined my poor hair! She left the color on too long and my ends (all of the ombre part which was a lot) was left completely fried! To top it off, the color wasn't what I expected so I later got another stylist to color over that, which in turn left my head with uneven color and very disastrous. I let some time pass, did my research, and decided it was time for a drastic cut to get rid of the damage and fix my color once in for all. That's when I went to Dice. Dice spent almost 3 hours on my hair. He even stayed past closing time to finish up. He first analyzed my hair type, damage, color, face shape, and texture for like 20 min. Then he "sculpted" my hair. He would at time even snip away at individual strands. He finally blow dried my hair and I happy with the results. I came here because I got a gift certificate for my birthday to get permanent Japanese Straightening. My sister and some friends come here so I had heard about it before. I came a while ago for a consultation, but wasn't ready to do it - now I am! I came in on Tuesday for a consultation to discuss the process, pricing, etc. Dice-K was nice and friendly and asked a lot of questions to help determine if we could do it. I was happy and wanted to book an appointment ASAP - since this is a 3.5 hour process, he told me that he only does them during the week, and that the latest appointment would be 5:00. This was tough to hear, being that I work until 6:00 each day. I told him I would call him back and decide - I asked several times about booking a weekend appointment, but he told me that he doesn't do this process on the weekends since it takes so long and he needs assistants. I called again the next day to try to get in there earlier. Dice told me he would see what he could do, he ended up moving some people around to accomidate me for an earlier appointment so I was very grateful! Upon arriving, I was greeted by the staff. They started right away, applying the treatment and getting started. Dice K had several hair cuts during my time there, he was good at remaining focused on each customer while having the assistants step in when needed. The man and woman who were helping were very friendly and nice, constantly asking if I needed anything, wanted water, etc. The 3.5 hours flew by and the end result was silky straight hair! It is a lengthy and costly process, but it is totally worth it in this SoFla heat! I highly recommend coming to Sha-La-La if you are in need of a change. First of all, let me just say that Dice K went above and beyond to make me happy. He is a great guy, and a master at what he does. I had gotten the Japanese thermal hair straightening treatment done. When I could finally wash my hair, it went back to being slightly frizzy and all around wavy- definitely not straight. I called Dice K up and let him know, and he fit me in for a same day appointment to redo the treatment. Three days later, I am on the phone again, explaining that my hair looks the same as before. Dice K offered to refund my treatment at that point, and I accepted. Now, I am mixed, I'm brown, I'm latina, and my hair is in a word: difficult. I had high hopes that this treatment would be the answer I was looking for and it seems like in a lot of people's cases it is. But do note that if you have ethnic hair, it may be a toss up. So even though my experience didn't turn out how I wanted, I can't recommend Dice K enough if you want to give it a shot. read more

So for starters, I heard about this place mainly through here. Seeing as to how I was overdue for a hair cut, I figured I'd give this place a try. Thus far, I can account that just about all the positive remarks about Daisuke (Dice-K) have been accurate; he is very precise and particular with his work. I would advise anyone wanting a haircut to schedule an appointment beforehand (should be a standard thing to do at salons anyway). My only problem (which wouldn't necessarily put Daisuke at fault) is the price of the cut. What I would normally pay back in Toronto for a cut/style and wash ($15CAD, which is just about the same in USD) is a little more than twice as much at this place. Granted, you don't find many places like this in south Florida (ESPECIALLY in south Florida, rather), so the cut was well worth it in my opinion. Very disappointed....... went to the salon based on the reviews.... and since I'm Asian, I thought going to Dice would be a great idea. He cut my hair dry and "straight across", 3" off the bottom... I called the same day and tried to work with his next appointment, therefore there was no shampoo nor blow dry which I really don't mind. I was charged just a few dollar less than full price for a 15 mins haircut that doesn't even look like it professionally done. Dice K is the best ever in the history of the world. He is such a nice guy, he's from Japan originally and lived in NY for a while now he's down here. Dice-K is easy to talk to and has a great laid back personality. I've been looking for an Asian to cut my Asian hair for years and I finally found the best one ever!!! CUT NOT COLOR. So many great reviews. I'd say sorry to be the one to say this, but the $210 I paid means I won't say sorry. Daisuke should. He may be a good cutter, my cut was pretty good except the sides by my face which should have been shaped more.(He didn't really look at me from the front, he was in too big of a hurry.) I brought in a picture. I asked for a lot of blonde highlights. I also needed roots touched up which I always get in a light brown. Daisuke said what I wanted was very difficult. It's not, I've had it done many times before. I should have said no to color at that point. I was 15 min late and he was in a big big rush. I said I'll come back another time but he was going away so I decided to stay. (I should have listened to my gut reaction.) So, he hurried like crazy. Having foil highlights put in requires patience not a rush job. (Thinking of you Leah up in Kingston, NY at Aveda, who takes hours.) He then said he does not do chunky highlights. I showed him the picture again on my phone, which was a girl with quite blonde hair. I showed him a magazine picture and he said "that's the lights above her head." ? I told him I wanted a lot more blonde now that I've moved to Florida. So, what I got was a very dark brown root job and minuscule, tiny tiny blonde highlights so the top of my head looks mostly brown. I emailed and explained $210 was a lot of money to me and I had been looking forward to getting my hair done for months. I thought he might reply and give me some more highlights, after all I paid a lot for them. He did not. He said when I was leaving the salon, come back in a month or so and we'll make it lighter then, it takes more than one visit. Huh? I worked for Loreal, what a crazy statement. So, I'm now going over to a hair colorist named Bobby at Euro Salon after asking a girl with incredibly beautiful highlights (at the Publix) where she got her hair done. I'll pay another $100+ to get what I wanted in the first place. What a bummer. read more

Dice-K is a confident artist and just a very nice man. During my haircut I had the chance to get to know him, and he also asked about not just my preferences for hairstyles, but about life. It's refreshing to be able to talk to your hairstylist like a friend, not like an unknown stranger eager to chop off your locks. I am so happy to have found Dice and a piece of NYC. His salon is clean, elegant, and very much reflective of his style. I really liked my haircut and now 6 months later it grew in gracefully. Definitely going for another haircut very soon. After getting ombre done, I was finally over it after 6 months. I could have dealt with it but I was looking for a change. Bleaching my Asian hair blonde made it look orange at times. Using purple shampoo helped but my hair was dry even when I would use products to protect the treatment and the condition of my hair. Dice K is freaking awesome!!! He took time to color individual strands of white hair he found on my scalp. My base color which was my natural dark brown color he did not color just the parts that were blonde. So now I'm close to my natural Asian color again of dark brown with a tint of red. When it was time to wash out the dye the shampoo session was like how I remembered it to be in NY when you took time to wash out the color, provide an awesome massage and the end result was squeaky clean hair. It was 15 mins of bliss just getting shampooed and conditioned, lol. My hair was dried before the cut. Which was the same procedure as the first time I went to see Dice K. Amazeballs!!! I don't know what else to say. My hair look so much more healthier. The color and cut was spot on. read more

I am so glad I found this salon! Ty yelp and fellow reviewers :) my whole experience was just what I was looking for. While this may not be the fanciest looking salons it is clean, well decorated, great music and most importantly has a phenomenal stylist!! Dice had me instantly relaxed from the shampoo and pressure points given to my scalp and was gentle and accommodating w my neck probs. I showed him what I wanted and he took his time w me perfecting my hair into an adorable and sassy lil pixie cut (which as we know can be scary trusting someone w that cut). This was a great find. I moved to Ft Lauderdale and was forced to find a new hairdresser. I had been going to the same girl for 6 years and am extremely picky and nervous about anyone touching my hair. I selected the Sha La La salon because they used a certain line of product that I like. When someone told me that Dice only uses scissors and cuts each hair individually I thought they were joking : they weren't. The shop is a minimalist design but fully functioning. He's definitely in high demand because as I was getting my hair cut the phone was ringing off the hook with people trying to get an appointment. I really liked the finished product and I think the listed price if $40 is totally fair but I have to deduct 1 star because I'm very easy to please with haircuts and while this one was great, it took an hour. Some people will love that. I on the other hand was bored and thinking about what I can't wait to go do after. My overall recommendation is to go, just don't go in a rush. read more

WOW is all I can say. I saw his 5 star reviews so I thought I would give it a shot. Dice-K is really cool and funky, his shop is very simple and clean yet stylish. I let him have at it with my hair and let him decide what look would be good based on the length I wanted to keep. He gave me a GREAT cut, and I didnt want to write a review until a few days later to see if the style he gave me could be replicated at home. Sometimes its hard to get that salon look after you get hom and have to do it yourself. So far it is THE BEST haircut I have ever gotten. I have gotten lots of compliments too!!! Technically the best style and cut you will ever get! Took 1-hour to cut my short hair, used 5 different scissors and I'm sure cut every hair on my head! Grows in beautifully!In my opinion, mo one cuts hair better than Japanese trained; 5-years apprentice before you can do your own thing. I used to pay $180.00 in NYC for similar talent from Japan. Upon first glance through the window I wasn't sure what to expect. This salon has a very minimal interior decor. A few chairs, some mirrors leaned up against the wall and a few other key pieces of furniture. I honestly would not have expected the owner and lead stylist to be so great. He knew what I wanted better than I did and was very focused throughout the process. Dice is a true master of his trade and one of the best stylists I have ever seen. I've had my hair treated with the Japanese Straightening for about 3 1/2 years. When I went in for my consultation with Dice-K as I was looking for a new stylist to perform that service, I expressed to him my concerns of not having my hair fried as the last 2 times the stylist burned my hair. He made me feel comfortable and I trusted him. Yet on the day of the service (03/27/2016), he was not my stylist, this was NOT mentioned on the day of consultation. He had two assistants doing my hair. Usually a scalp protectant is applied, when I noticed this was not done and spoke up, he advised me they used a different product which bypasses that step and that the product is applied without touching my scalp. This was not the case, after feeling my scalp burn, I realized it was a familiar feeling to when previously having my hair burned. I couldn't communicate with his assistants as there was a language barrier and he was in the middle of doing someone else's hair. Once I got his attention, he came to check on my hair, and started removing the excess product (which was in fact on my scalp) rapidly. He communicated with his assistants, I had no idea what was said, but the look in one of their faces was worrisome. I held in my tears and just prayed I didn't walk out of there bald. After washing my hair, my scalp still felt tender and with a burn like sensation. They put me under the running water again to wash out all the product thoroughly. After 2 weeks, I could feel where the burned hair was, I have several patches throughout my hair. Also, the front of my hair had a wave, which is not supposed to. When I called him and explained everything he was apologetic and wanted me to come in to fix the front of my hair. But would you trust someone with your hair after they already burned it? It's not as if he could magically add the hair they burned off!!! Now 7 weeks later, and pictured below is the growth of the new hair that was burned. I have this on both sides of my head, allowing me to only part my hair in the middle. This service is very pricey, and it's terrible to pay someone so much money only to walk out of there with fried hair. My search for a hairstylist that doesn't burn your hair continues. =( read more

I think I'm living in a fairytale...The Emperor' s New Clothes. How is it that almost everyone in this chain of reviews got incredibly amazing haircuts and mine is just OK? Don't get me wrong--like the rest of you, I think Dice is a very cool guy. The salon is spare but clean and has all of the essentials. John, Dice's assistant is as nice as can be. The haircut is theater--an experience like no other: Dice's hands fly, the scissors fly, the hair flies-- its very entertaining, but at the end of the day, everything rests on the haircut! Trust me, I wanted to love this haircut--but I can't. I think I may love it more in about 3 or 4 weeks. In the midst of all of the flying (hands, scissors, hair) my hair was thinned to the point where it just lays pretty flat....not any movement to it. If it isn't in exactly the right place in the back, scalp shows through and it looks like I have a bald spot (I don't have bald spots!). The top is longer, the sides are pretty short and a bit uneven and the style is reminiscent of something I had many years ago. In my life I've had haircuts that have made me cry but this is not one of those. Its OK and will be much better in a few weeks but it isn't the amazing haircut others claim to have received. Will I return? Unlikely. Is it worth the try for you? Maybe...you'll have to judge for yourself. read more

At our first meeting I told Dice I did not want my hair cut short. I explained that i wanted it "shortened up" a bit, but to leave the fullness. In spite of what I said, he cut my hair in a "pixie" short hair style. I HATE IT! It is difficult to work with and now I have to live with this haircut for months until it grows out. Everyone who sees it says, the haircut is not bad, but it is way too short and not flattering to my face. Ladies, beware. Soooo glad I found this gem! I had been doing my research, looking for the perfect person to do my pixie cut. Well I found him! I was looking on the internet and came across yelp and he had the best reviews for "pixie cut in Florida" Also Renee posted a review which caught my attention. I, too, am a hair snob! Not picky... Easy going.... But I love my hair! The experience was amazing. As soon as I sat down and explained the hair style I wanted, Dice K was honest with me and helped me choose the best cut. Straight away, hair was flying and whipping all around. My hubby and 7 month old daughter were there as well and he would take the time to look at her and play peek a boo behind Mommy's head.
