We've eaten here many times in the past 5 years. Food is good, prices have gone up but are still decent, service is excellent, and this is one of the few old-fashioned sit-down restaurants left around. I'd rate it a 4.5 if it wasn't for the thievery they are now practicing on their customers... So, at the end of an always-enjoyable meal, instead of an itemized bill (which I believe is REQUIRED BY LAW), the waiter just presented a hand-held payment device stating NOTHING but the total. We demanded an itemized bill, which they took 5 minutes to create. Now, this itemized bill amount was a bit less, which could've been an honest mistake, but really, do they EVER make a mistake in the customer's favor? As normal, we leave a 20% pre-tax tip (one of the reasons why we needed the itemized bill), but when entering the credit card info, the machine "suggested" different tip amounts, and THERE is where the blatant scam occurrs! So, on a pre-tax bill of $78, what is 20%? It's $15.60. The post tax bill was something around 84.25, and 20% of THAT would be $16.85. But this hand-held "electronic grift machine" says that 20% is.....$21?? In what alternate universe is THIS possible? The obvious answer is that they are trying to scam people out of another $5, maybe $10, or even more! When did they decide to fleece their customers for petty increases? Do they think that fiscal dishonesty is a valid business model? Daheq are they THINKING?? Well, right now I'm filing a complaint with the NY State Attorney General's office. I'm disappointed, because I really liked the place despite it being located on a golf course, but it will be a cold day in hell when I'll give any business to a thief again! If anybody decides to eat there, DEMAND an itemized bill, and expect that they WILL try to fleece you. read more

A group gathered to celebrate a friend's birthday. I had never been here, it was kind of an adventure to go. Their menu is pretty accommodating to all kinds of tastes. We wanted to share a few calamari appetizers, but they were out. I opted for a French Fries basket. I think the best FF I have eaten in my life. Our order went from sandwiches, burgers, to full dinner entrées: Chicken Marsala, Chicken Milanese, Lamb Chops, different Fish Fryes.) broil, beer batter) Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. My Chicken Milanese was excellent on a bed of arugula salad with shaved Parmesan and dried tomatoes. There is an extensive bar menu of wines, beers, cocktails. For dessert, we shared Chocolate Fanache & Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake. It is spotty, but there are young staff and we didn't mind. The atmosphere is surrounded by nature. We have eaten here a couple times after playing a round and the food is always delicious! This week we tried their burger bar for the first time that they host on Thursdays in the colder months. What a deal! You can choose between a burger or grilled chicken sandwich - while those are being cooked, there is a bottomless salad bar with lots of great toppings. When the entree comes out, it comes with bottomless fries AND toppings bar. This does end during golf season, but definitely recommend heading in for this before it's done til next year! read more

Great golf course and restaurant! I have golfed here for years the course is beautiful, but just recently I enjoyed a meal and it was fantastic!!!! What a talented chef! The customer service is amazing, courteous, prompt, outgoing, engaging, friendly, I was impressed. Ryan was tending bar and took time to answer questions about hosting an event and was so thorough she is awesome! They have a nice selection of entrees and specials. A friend and I had a delicious lunch as we appreciated the beautiful view, rich with autumn color. I had the Granny Apple Chicken Salad and couldn't resist an order of sweet potato fries. My friend had the generous fish fry. We both had the chocolate decadent cake. ALL DELICIOUS, as were my screwdriver and her bloody Mary. Our server, Luke, was so efficient and especially friendly. We went to Shadow Lake for our typical Friday "fishing" night and were not disappointed! We have been there several times before and look forward to returning. Friday we decided to dine in the tap room and enjoy the music artists at the same time. Our server (Jenna) was cheerful, attentive, but did not rush us in placing our dinner selections so we could enjoy our evening. We ordered French style & beer battered fish dinners and they were delicious! The singer & guitar duo were very good as well! This review is for the restaurant. We sat on the indoor porch area on a Friday night after golf, which was lovely and had a great view. Unfortunately it was so loud we couldn't talk with each other. I ordered salmon salad, which the menu said was a 4 oz. piece of salmon. I've been measuring food for 40 years and thought it looked more like 2 oz. I mentioned it to the server who agreed and took it back to the kitchen. He returned with the same plate and said no, they're all that size. My go-to place for golf. They have a 9-hole executive course with no tee time needed and also a separate 18-hole course. I've found the executive course to be good for a beginner like me. Most holes are pretty wide with limited bunkers and water. I'm hoping that the recent fire doesn't affect their operation for the next golf season. read more

I can here to golf today for the first time and really loved it. I strictly play public courses and upon getting there, I was concerned it would have the "country club" vibe because of how nice it was, but that wasn't the case at all. Though we have golfed here over the years this review is for the restaurant at Shadow Lake. We have dined here on occasion and I am thinking it has been at least two years since our last visit. The arts & crafts decorated dining room is quite nice with a great view of the pond and the 9th hole (when it is not dark outside). We made a reservation for Saturday night but it was not needed. There was a lively crowd at the bar and a special event in the room next door but the dining room was dead. Only three tables were occupied and within 30 minutes we had the place to ourselves at 7pm on a Saturday! Our server was very attentive (she should have been) and we chatted about how empty the place was - seems like Fridays are more lively in winter. The entrees do come with salads which is unusual these days. They were good, nothing special. The veal short ribs had a rich sauce with mushrooms and onions but the veal itself was a bit fattier and chewier than I would have expected in this dish. The salmon entree was tasty but slightly overcooked. We skipped dessert. Perhaps next time we will just come in after golf and have something from the bar menu... read more

My husband and I attended a wedding here last night. There were 2 wedding receptions going on at the same time. We were unknowingly in the outdoor tent wedding instead of in the clubhouse. (Not the venue's fault) For a mid-October wedding, we were surprised to be outside, 57 degrees, tent flaps open. I only brought a light cardigan, assuming we'd be indoors. Unfortunately, even the restrooms were in the clubhouse and thus, you had to brave the chilly night to go relieve yourself. We were also surprised that there were no outdoor heaters going at the tables outside. The food was good. My husband and I both had the Chicken French. Portions seemed a bit small. Roasted potatoes were dry. Banquet staff was friendly. Earlier this year, my bridal shower was also held here. We had a banquet room with a beautiful view of a lake. The food was good, I can't hold it against Shadow Lake that I wished we picked a different option. The service was great. read more

Well, after trying five times to visit this shwanky place to use our groupon, we have finally gotten inside!! My first impression was that its nice, if dated, highlight by the hostess who is a total shrew. How dare we peons intend to sup on the vittles of our masters without a reservation. Reservasation? The golf course was long for the front tees and most of the time all the tees were on the same tee box. This makes it more difficult for people who play the red or gold tees. Golfer here for years and have had many corporate events but this was our first family dinner. Friday night, a reasonable crowd in both the restaurant and bar area but certainly not packed. We had reservations for 10 and were promptly seated when all of our guests had arrived. Service staff were polite but s-l-o-w !!! Water came after a few minutes, then the waitress ask about drinks then she was gone. We had to ask about bread/rolls. I personally thought the menu was quite limited and a bit disappointed. Once I got beyond that and everyone ordered things moved along ok. Not great or exceptional but ok. The food: prime rib was very good, cooked to order and generous portions. Those who had the fish fry were pleased. The Romesco flank steak was very tough. And our nephew said the pork special was not so special!! As our evening progressed our server became more and more scarce. At one point I called her over to ask for the bill. Then we waited and everyone left the table and I waited and waited. Finally she came with the bill. While not stellar service and a mix on the meal our $90 Groupon offset some of the disappointment. One order was incorrect but our server didn't react much when it was pointed out. They said they were short staffed but we saw several workers setting up for a dinner party. Came up from nyc for my cousins wedding. Have to say that I'm a stickler for details. I approached the events manager after the wedding given the fact that the garbage under the venue space hadn't been emptied and smelled like fish heads. During the indoor reception I politely approached her and made sure she knew about it. She insisted that it was the manure or the lake... listen, I've done landscaping and I know what stale lake water smells like. I also know what a garbage smells like when i stand next to it and assess it. She was extremely rude and dismissive AND the venue wasn't even set up by the time the ceremony was over! If she was my direct report she'd get a pep talk... No way to talk to customers becky! Shame on you. read more

The place was absolutely gorgeous. The way you had it set up was just perfect. The food was really delicious & I was impressed by the way the food was still available for a while for family members who came in late. But, last but certainly not least, I was absolutely impressed with your staff!! I don't think it's even possible to have a better crew... They were EXTREMELY attentive & when asked for anything they didn't hesitate & did it with smiles!! Please, Please, Please pass on to them that they were the best we could have asked for & many family members took me aside to tell me how impressed they were by them! I just had my wedding at Shadow Lake and I have to say everything was absolutely amazing. The event coordinator, Ryan Carbone was an absolute dream to work with, she was super responsive and helpful on all counts, from decorating to food choices! The food was excellent, the venue is beautiful, with some old style charm, and big open windows over looking the lake. I loved every minute of my wedding, minus the cold weather that we got, but that was out of Shadow Lake's control! Aside from having my wedding there, I have had dinner there which is not the same as the wedding menu, and the food was also excellent. The short ribs were amazing, I know a lot of folks see it as just a golf club, but it has great food as well! read more

Just had the most wonderful dinner with friends here. I had the Shadow Lake French. Codfish lightly fried in an egg batter with a very light french sauce. They put it on the bottom to keep the batter crispy. One woman asked for more sauce. It was on a bed of wild rice/long grain rice homemade pilaf and that day the chef special vegetable was broccolini. The cod was cooked perfectly as was everything else. We had started off in the bar area as we gathered for dinner. Bartender was very friendly and informative. The house cabernet was very nice. The atmosphere was lovely but I felt a little too casual in jeans. read more

We went to The Grill and Tap Room at Shadow Lake with 10 of our family members to celebrate a birthday. It's a beautiful setting here and the restaurant sits right next to the lake. They have a very nice menu and almost all the food was excellent. There was a situation with one of the meals that was sent back and was happily corrected. We had quesadillas, pizza, and deviled eggs for apps to start when we sat down. Everything was good and the deviled eggs may have been the best I have ever had, I had the seafood chowder and a crab cake for dinner. The chowder was excellent, the crab cake was petite and well seasoned. I thought that it was a little high end for the size of it but it was all fresh crab meat and delicious. Full bar service and a very good service staff. IT was a clean atmosphere but I did notice that they have a lot of cob webs on the inside corners of the restaurant windows and I was not real impressed with that. Have gone to Shadow Lake 2-3x (mostly holiday dinners) per yr for many years. Many nice memories. Went last night- so disappointing! New interior reminds me of college dining hall- cold in appearance, no ambiance what-so-ever; cheap tables, plastic covered chairs, and shoddy and sparse décor. Too brightly lit, no tablecloths- everything "on the cheap". Even the dinner plates were cheap. Broiled fish undercooked with odd taste- wondered if spoiled. Poor quality freezer type French fries were cold- our beloved Shadow Lake is gone forever. Will not attend Thanksgiving there this year- will not return ever. So very sad. read more

My little brother graduated from Allendale Columbia School this past month and the reception for the graduates, their families, and school faculty was held at the Shadow Lake Country Club. The gathering space was elegantly decorated and welcoming. The cash bar was open and available for attendees who were 21+ (they did a good job asking everyone for id's). My boyfriend and I were very disappointed that the cost of the drinks were so high, the bar tenders weren't friendly, and the drinks were mixed wrong (more than once). The second time around my drink tasted like watered down soda. My older brother stormed back to the bar and insisted they give us drinks that were properly made. Appetizers were promptly served to the party and they looked delicious. Unfortunately, the country club didn't make enough for the number of guests so I didn't have any. As a matter of fact, almost everyone I spoke with was confused as to why we had paid so much money for tickets to this event yet there wasn't even enough food for everyone. This was an additional disappointment. Salads were served at the tables but the majority of the guests were walking around mingling and were not informed that food was waiting at the tables. When I got back to my assigned table, the salads (uneaten!) were gone! The wait staff decided to take away all of the plates - even those with untouched salads! I neither had Appetizers nor the designated salad at the table...and I was starving! My brothers and I were sitting on the deck which overlooks a pond when we overheard the wait staff while they prepared the buffet for dinner: "if dinner goes anything like the appetizers, it's going to be a long and miserable night". Were they implying a shortage of food for the main entrée? My brothers, boyfriend, and I were shocked to hear this statement... Luckily our table was one of the first called up to the buffet so we were able to get enough food. However, tables that were called up later were not able to have the same size portions that we served ourselves. The beans were cooked with nuts and the wait staff offered no alternative. I was shocked and disappointed that they didn't take into account allergies or make accommodations for those were had diet restrictions. The beans were the only offered vegetable dish for the evening. The chicken that was served looked like it was trying to imitate Chicken French which is unnecessary because Rochester invented the dish. The kitchen achieved the impossible: extremely dried out chicken that was undercooked on the inside. My boyfriend was sick to his stomach the entire evening. It is easy to see that this Country Club is incapable of serving large groups. The majority of their wait staff were teenagers which wouldn't have been a problem if they had acted more mature. They clearly lacked proper training and Country Club etiquette. Allendale Columbia School should definitely reserve space at the Country Club of Rochester for the graduation reception next year because their service is superb and the venue boast beautiful views of the golf course grounds. read more
