I brought my son to Shady Lakes for Labor Day and it was wonderful!! Between my friends and I, we caught nine fish. They were having a Labor Day special so each fish was $5.00. We seriously had the best time. My son is 6 so he doesn't have a whole lot of patience. We got there around 1pm but the fish didn't start biting until 3pm. We decided to make it a Labor Day tradition because we had so much fun. Right at about 3pm the fish started biting and biting. We actually had to stop because we started to catch too many. Everyone there was very nice. We did hear that it will be under new ownership starting in 2021 season. I would definitely recommend this place for kiddos. I only found out today that they had closed. It was a great place growing up, coming on field trips, and great for young kids and new timers to fishing. Fun to help others learn how to fish, bait their own hook (especially getting young girls into fishing). It was almost guaranteed you would catch something. I even caught a novelty golden trout here once. Beautiful lily pads and could hear the bullfrogs. But, at almost $0.70 an inch I can see where it could get a little pricey Like the old saying goes, "Teach a man to fish and you'll feed him for a lifetime". Stumbled upon this great little place, and I can't wait to come back! Shady Lakes is a private fishing hole, so no state fishing license is required. You can pay for a catch & release permit, or a trout permit. Fish are sold by the inch. Non-fishers are welcome too and can pay a small day permit and picnic. Bring what you want and enjoy the day! Great place to learn to fish for kids. I wanted to teach my step son how to fly fish and they wouldn't allow fly fishing there hummmmmm. Not sure why but he caught 3 fish big ones with bait very $$$. But nice day to learn to fish! read more

Went to go fishing on a Friday for approximately 4 hours. They have a two lakes a catch and release and a small trout lake. I only attended the catch and release lakes. Lots and lots of moss. Really beautiful area with trees (hint: the name shady lakes) but there is a lot of lily pads in the lakes. read more

There are fish in the high desert, you just need to know where they hang out. Shady Lakes is one of the longest established private fishin' holes in the state, and the years of cultivation and development are evident the moment you steer your car onto the old country road that leads to the estate. Giant cottonwoods and lush, lily padded ponds provide a welcome contrast to the harsh dry landscape of Albuquerque proper, and within minutes you'll find yourself anxious to kick off your shoes and wait for that bobber to drop. The way it works: You don't need a state permit, since this is a private joint. Adults are charged a daily permit price and kids under 12 pay a little less for the privilege of dropping a line. Visitors who aren't fishing still must pay a minor visitation fee. The rule is that you keep whatever you catch, and you pay a fee per INCH, not pound, for each fish. If you come empty handed you can purchase everything at the shop, poles, bait and all. You'll mostly catch rainbow trout, but I've also landed bluegill and bass, and apparently there are catfish as well. The fish can get huge, and they're hungry, which means the kiddos are going to have a lot of fun. This is a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch in the shade while the kids squeal with delight. Be warned: Just a few fish will make your visit spendy. More importantly: staff will not clean the fish for you, so you must either clean them on the premises with the rather rustic accommodations provided or you may bring them to someone who knows how, and likely pay for that service as well. Awesome place to take 1st timers. Fish in the trout pond basically fight over your trout pellets. There are a few bass ponds, and pics on sight of huge bass. I didnt have any luck in those ponds, but we had gotten there later in the day and spent the 1st half hour setting up my girlfriend and her son in the trout side. On a side note. This place cam get pricey. $12 a person to fish in the trout pond and you have to keep the fish. They charge to keep them and charge by the inch. I realized this after about 15 minutes and we already had the fish on the stringer as instructed when we got there. So $36 for 2 adults and a child to fish PLUS $56 to keep and self clean 6 trout. A little fishing fun can get steep here if you are in the trout ponds. But the person running it was nice and my girlfriend and her son both caught their 1st fish. Really nice place until I went to pay. I was wearing a mask and the lady working at the counter told us to come around to the other side. Then her husband or the owner of the place cussed us out when we we're leaving to get our gear, very unprofessional and really rude. The fishing is also not that great they feed there fish corn almost every day, so they aren't hungry and don't bight. Then they don't let you fish with corn either. read more

While this is the most expensive trout I've ever bought, the experience makes it all worthwhile. The lakes are stocked so that everyone can catch a fish and have a great time. Even our three-year-old granddaughter caught a fish. Go and have a great fun. read more
