My family and I dinner here on my last day in Iowa. I was blown away that on a Wednesday they were packed. This made for a noisy atmosphere but tolerable. The servers tag teamed our table and we got excellent service. I live in Hawaii and it is impossible to find Pork Tenderlion Sandwich there. I was not disappointed with my sandwich and even got ro sample the Bison Burger, which also is a great choice. I wish we had something like this in Honolulu. I'm a huge fan of Shakespeare's. Their smoked chicken wings are some of the best - they're definitely a favorite of ours. The staff are top notch - when super busy they cover one another to ensure your order is taken, your drinks & food are served promptly, and drinks are refilled upon request. Roger makes a great Bloody Mary! I was however very disappointed with their corned beef & cabbage yesterday evening. It was served cold and the corned beef was cut with the grain, not against as it should be. So, it was terribly tough and overall disappointing. This restaurant never ceases to amaze me. The beef vegetable soup was EXCELLENT we have had several soups and they are ALWAYS SO DELICIOUS. Battered tenderloin hot, not tough, always THE BEST. Solid pub! For as long as I've lived in Iowa City, I have never made it to Shakespeare's and I wish I had before this visit. Very friendly servers and a large (but not too large) menu for both food and drink. I enjoyed my quesadilla (lots of flavor) and it was very filling. Went on a hunt while visiting to try and find the best tenderloin sandwich in the area and after numerous searches through various sites and apps, Shakespeare's was the winner. Stopped in and was able to be seated right away and we hit the perfect time because within 5-10 mins the pace was full and had a waitlist. The staff was super friendly and the energy was very family friendly. We started with a basket of tots and onion rings. Both hit the spot and were gone in minutes guess we were hungry. They were cooked perfectly crispy and paired well with the ranch dressing. I ordered the tenderloin sandwich fully dressed with a cup of the soup of the day. Whoever made it knows how to season food it was packed full of flavor! Since I did a hunt for the tenderloin sandwich this wasn't the biggest I've seen but man it was so good! It was fine. We went for lunch and it was surprisingly dim. The food was okay, but there was a handyman using power tools in the restroom the entire time. Extremely loud. Don't let the wood paneling from the 80s detract you from going. Had a very nice experience during NFL Kickoff. Speaking of which, they have the ticket here and all games appeared to be on at least one TV. Our server was effective and checked in regularly. Classic bar food options--none of the high end options some places are gravitating towards. They also have a late night menu with bites available until 1 AM--wish we had some of this in DSM. I had the "Pick two" combo basket with breaded cauliflower and battered onion rings. Both of these were fried to perfection. I also had the ultimate grilled cheese on sourdough. I elected potato salad as the side and that was the only disappointment--didn't taste much better than the cheap stuff in the deli case at Walmart. I look forward to my next visit. read more

All the food was really good for pub fare, but the tenderloin was a bit of a letdown. I have been going to Shakespeare's for many years. Everything on the menu that I have had is delicious. My favorite is the steak salad. I get it lightly seasoned and with the balsamic it comes with. You cannot beat Taco Tuesdays with $1 tacos. You can choose hard or soft as well as beef or bean. The beer list is impressive with many local to Iowa selections. If you aren't a craft beer person they still have all the basic domestic beers there too. Try the Tank Puncher IPA it is great. Staff is great and remembers me and my dining companions and our typical orders. There are televisions with sports on so I can watch the game while I eat and enjoy a beer. The ambiance is that of a laid back pub but they do get busy. read more

I preferred the soft shell taco, but my girlfriend preferred the hard shell tacos. Service was good. My girlfriends soda was almost out, and another server offered to fill it before ours had the chance to. Also, they filled my water without me asking for a refill. We sat out on the patio, which was very nice as it was a great night to e outside. The patio can be a little tight with tables back to back, but that didn't bother us too much. read more

Found Shakespear's kinda by accident. Had the Rueben and fries. Rueben was very good and the fries (pub style - breaded like) were excellent. Will definitely go again, next time we will try breakfast, hard to find a home cooked breakfast anymore.
