I thought Jewel of India of Lark was the best Indian restaurant in the area, but then I tried Shalimar in Latham. Good God. The. Best. Ever. We've eaten here or gotten take-out five or six times now. My husband and I loved the Chicken Tikka (huge take-out portion could serve a family), Chicken Tikka Masala (delectably sweet and spicy), Vegetable Korma (creamy goodness with a hint of nut), Malai Kofta (best balls around!), Paneer Karahi (spicy with a zing of pepper), and the Mattar Paneer (mild, super fresh peas). I really enjoy this buffet. I find it to be very affordable. They recognize you if you are a frequent eater there (like me and my family). I've had them cater my one party we ordered a huge tray of tandoori chicken and chicken tiki masala, while we waited for the food they let us get whatever we wanted from the buffet for free and gave us a huge basket of naan. I love the tiki masala, palak paneer, vegetable korma, and pretty much everything else! They have goat on Saturday's if you like goat. Solid 3.25-3.5 star Indian Restaurant in the Capital Region. My friend and I came dinner and ordered Curry Chicken and Chili Chicken with generous helpings of naan. Their curry chicken was alright but I have had much better. The Chili Chicken was pretty good. The sauce is made from Chinese and Indian spices with the chicken fried but without breading with a cilantro top. Honestly tasted like General Tso's Chicken with a hint of Cilantro. I have eaten here many times. This is THE Indian restaurant to go to if you're looking for a lunch buffet in the Latham area. It is spiced to reflect the cuisine, not completely blanded down like I've found at other locations in the Capital District (and elsewhere). The food is consistently good, and nearly always fresh (the exception may be if you show up as they're about to close the buffet down). It's a little pricey since they raised prices, but so worth the money. The only "problem" I've had is that the naan disappears almost as soon as they put out a fresh basket, but it's so tasty that it's worth the wait. There is sufficient selection here that a vegetarian can eat a filling meal without it being all bread and rice. (I am not a vegetarian, but I often eat with people who are). Staff is quite friendly. Sometimes it takes a while to place your beverage order, which is a problem if you have a limited lunch break. (I always get water, but since it doesn't come automatically, you have to order it). I dinged a star for this, because people go to buffets for the quick time as much, if not more so, than for the food itself. read more

Tonight was our first visit, we enjoyed the food the service was really lacking. my partner was helped into the restraunt I made it in a short time latter and sat down. waited for several minutes then I asked for something to drink, you should never have to ask its one of the first things done in a restraunt. No waitres's and I can only assume it was management waiting on us, by other actions during our visit. It almost made me feel like we were a bother by being there unfortunatly. Our Dinner's were fresh hot and delicous. we will go back again and hopefully the service will be different. Perhaps it was because it was a Thursday early evening perhaps not. My boyfriend is a huge fan of Indian food, and Shalimar Latham in particular. I prefer to have Indian only once in awhile, but when it comes to Indian food, Shalimar is a good place to get it. The restaurant itself is pretty large and the tables are spaced apart nicely. There are two waiters - one is really good, and one is pretty bad. The shorter guy with hair is the good one. He's really nice and goes out of his way to make you happy. The taller bald guy doesn't seem to know the menu well and isn't all that friendly. The food is very good. The naan is freakin' awesome. It's crispy and I think they spread a little butter over it. They also have really good baklava for dessert, and if you go for the lunch buffet, try the rice pudding. read more

We went there for dinner two nights ago. I had my lamb vindaloo and the lady had the goat curry. We also had garlic naan, which came out hot and fresh. Service wasn't great, but the food was, and the prices were very reasonable. It's also conveniently located for us, which is a plus. Perhaps most importantly (and unlike a lot of Indian places I've visited in the Tri-City area), they didn't significantly reduce the level of their spices, so you're getting a bit more of a real flavor instead of something dulled down. We were passing through the area fairly late in the evening, heading to our hotel. We were hungry and tired. My wife is on a vegan plus seafood diet (health reasons) and finding food for her in most restaurants can be challenging. However, I knew Indian food is compatible with this diet. I got Lamb Madras which was excellent. My wife had the Mulligatawny Soup and Shrimp Palak which was also excellent. I really enjoyed the soup. The spice level was just right. This restaurant fits into my norm, it is a hole I'm the wall. The money is spent on the food, not the decor. Just as I would prefer. I will definately come back the next time we are in the area. I have never had goat and I understand they have it on the lunch buffet. I will make an effort to get back for lunch. I have not found an Indian restaurant that I liked I'm the US. How have I never reviewed Shalimar before?! There are many in this area (numerous Shalimar's even), and the others are good, but this location stands as the greatest Pakistani and Indian I have ever had. I know, who would have thought you'd find that outside of Albany? Now, I don't claim to be an expert, but as a picky eater, I have tried many of the dishes I love here at various establishments around the world. So, I'm also not joking when I say, when fresh and piping hot, the chicken tikka masala here is the BEST. I don't what they do, there's just something extra about it that sets it apart from every other chicken tikka dish out there. The naan here is also always fluffy, buttery and delicious. In fact, my only qualm about their lunch buffet is that they can never keep up with refilling the naan (it's just too good)! Everything we get is delicious - the onion baiji, chicken pakoras, tandoori chicken, vindaloos, and so on. When we do dine in, we have no problems with the staff and everything is always pretty quick. And when we order for pick-up, it's always fresh, hot and correctly packed.
