Sand sculpture in the works. Shamrock 2014.

The Shamrock Marathon is seriously one of the best races around. I first did the Half Marathon in 2010, and immediately knew that I wanted to return one day for the full Marathon, which I did this year. In fact, I did the Whale Challenge (8K on Saturday, Marathon on Sunday). Everything about this race is great. The registration fees are comparable to other marathons, and of course cheaper the earlier you register. With registration, you get your typical technical shirt (for the marathon and half - 8K gets a long sleeved cotton tee), and finisher's medal. But that's not all - for both the half and the full, I've gotten a technical finisher's hat each year, in 2010 got a long sleeved finisher's tee, and this year got a finisher's beach towel. Also, for completing the Whale Challenge, I received a medal for the 8K, Marathon, and a special Whale Challenge Medal. The expo is well organized, and a great place to pick up even more free swag. This year I left the expo with a Livestrong tech hat, a couple of cups, Chapstick (I like to keep one in the pocket of each of my running jackets), a ton of beer cozies, and a handful of other samples and freebies. They have decent quality race items for purchase, including a nice Brooks top that I bought, and a pint glass (I like to collect them from all my big races). The races themselves are also well organized. There's no question as to where your corral begins, and the corrals go off at decent intervals. Tons of water/Gatorade stations, and even a few Gu stations along the marathon course. And with photographers everywhere, you are guaranteed a great race pic! The crowds are also great and enthusiastic, especially our finest men and women stationed at the Virginia Beach Army Base. Following the race is a cool celebration inside the party tent on the beach. The Yuengling is free flowing and some bands play. There's also some Irish stew, which unfortunately is not vegetarian, because a nice hot, salty stew would have been nice after the marathon. Runners must put this race on their "to do" list. I hope to go back to Virginia Beach to do one of the other J&A Races, probably the Surfin' Santa 10 Miler in December.

Ha, I WISH I ran the marathon. Maybe one day. Last year, I ran the Shamrock 8k, which is part of the Shamrock Marathon. It was my first race, and I had a blast. There are hundreds of people signed up for the race, and the organizers do an amazing job with crowd control at the Oceanfront. Okay, it's a bit cold and windy at the beach in the middle of March, but once you are running, it's not so bad. For the 8k, the very last stretch of the race was on the boardwalk overlooking the ocean. You can't beat that for some motivation. After the race, there's a tent with live music and free beer on the beach. I wish I could work up the appetite for a drink, but nothing appeals to me less than beer after a 5-mile run when it's still 10:30 in the morning. Even Yuengling didn't tempt me. Anyhow, this was my very first race, and it was a great way to get started and excited about jogging. If you're new to running or you are just jogging, I encourage you to consider the Shamrock. It's really a lot of fun. There are runners and walkers and everything in between, so you'll fit right in. There's also a half-marathon as well as a kids race.

I ran the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon this past weekend as my second full marathon and had a BLAST! I will say that this was the coldest I've ever been on a run, as a nor'easter was blowing through Virginia Beach and winds were gusting out of control, especially as we ran along the boardwalk and along Atlantic Ave. (But that is not the fault of the race directors or J & A Racing!) The week of the race, the weather for race day (Sunday March 20th) looked atrocious. At one point, the forecast was calling for a full-blown thunderstorm. Thankfully the weather improved before race day but it rained the majority of the night prior, so there were puddles galore, and the race start- as well as several stretches of the course- was incredibly windy; one girl I ran past likened it to "what it would be like to run in a tornado". I hope to high heaven I'm never caught running in a tornado but yes, I'd have to agree with those sentiments. In terms of race weekend, weather aside, I'll start with the expo, which was very well-organized; I picked up my swag Saturday in lieu of Friday, and there were a great deal of vendors and fun race gear to sift through. The expo, held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, had 'Shamrock On' and green everywhere, as well as some fun photo opps (including a giant rainbow with a pot of gold at the end and actual plastic coins scattered all over the floor beneath. Very apropos!) The entry-fee of $130 + $8.50 processing fee (by the time I registered in late Jan/early Feb) included wrist-bands for up to 4 Yuengling draft beers at the after-party; after picking up my bib and shirt (no lines for either- arrived at the expo around 2:30/3PM Saturday and it closed at 5PM), I went through the ID check to receive my bracelet. All in all, I was in and out of the expo in under an hour; would have liked to stay longer and shop but needed to check into the hotel and prepare the customary 'flat Annie' for race day. Fast-forward to race morning: unfortunately finding parking was not a breeze in the least but I let my friend handle that and just had him drop me off, then I walked a few blocks to the start line, located at Atlantic and 31st. The wind was already insane at this point (around 8AM); I had no trouble finding a row of Porta Potties on my way (this race had way more Porta Potties than I've seen at any prior races!! Anthem Richmond, take notes!) and then went inside a large seafood restaurant to huddle up with the other runners who were refusing to stand outside in the cold and wind. (Truly, if you've never seen a bunch of runners wearing garbage bags huddled up inside a building with only a few minutes until the gun goes off, it's quite the sight!) As I was in corral 4, I didn't end up waddling outside until almost 8:30, which was cutting it a bit close, as the race started RIGHT on the dot. (The race directors must have German blood! Immer punktlich). The course was a bit boring, I thought (but flatter than a pancake! DEFINITELY a great opportunity for a PR!) but I made a few friends and ran with a nice man named Eric for miles 4 through 7, then I scaled back my pace a bit as we entered the first military base. The coolest part of the course was seeing the lighthouses on Ft. Story. Aside from that, I just ran and listened to my thoughts; it was nowhere near as scenic as my first marathon (Anthem Richmond, which takes place in November every year). The after-party was a BLAST and probably one of the top reasons I'd run this race again, if the opportunity presents itself. *Recommendations: -Sign up early/before the price hike to beat the price increase! -Visit the expo during off-hours/after 2pm Saturday, and you will have no trouble getting in and out. -Plan way more than enough time for parking, especially if you don't have anyone dropping you off. -Wear layers (I had super last-minute decided to order arm sleeves to go with the rest of my green outfit and I am SO glad I did; the wind this time of year makes it brutally cold, especially by the water). -Use the facilities (if needed) before passing through the 13.1 timing mat; I couldn't find another Porta Potty until almost the 16 mile mark, which wasn't a huge deal but something to consider. -Bring flip-flops for the after-party; it's all sand in the tent! (Or you could pull an Annie and just go bare-foot..) *Conclusion: great swag; very well-organized; after-party is fantastic; medical attention was great after the race (needed ice and a space blanket, although we also received towels this year!); beautiful medals; plenty of beer at the after-party. Huge 'thank you' to the great volunteers who gave out water along the way and those who were enthusiastically cheering us on, even in the brutal wind and conditions! Shamrock, you ROCK!

The 2016 Shamrock 8K was my very first race and it will always have a special place in my heart because of that. The race is around the Oceanfront area so the crowd support is awesome! You even have people cheering for you off their balconies in the hotels. Since it's such a large event that means no matter if you're walking it or truly racing it you're going to have a good time. You have some people who go for PRs, but I'd say most dress up and have fun with it. If you're looking for an extra challenge you can sign up for the Dolphin or Whale Challenges which has you run the 8K on Saturday and then either the half or the full on Sunday. The swag you get at the finish and the quality of the after party hasn't been matched by any other race I've attended. Everything is five-star from start to finish.

So we decided to purchase a Groupon which was significantly lower than the regular price to attend. Im happy we decided to get the Groupon. My first sign that something was off was when I started looking at the parking options and realized everything they suggested was pretty far. Which didn't seem like a good idea seeing as though we were about to run. We decided to park in a neighborhood not too far away so that we wouldn't have to walk very far. The race was to start at 8:30 we arrived around 8:15.Second sign I should have went home. There were hundreds of people outside the gate to enter the race. It was no less than 90 degrees and the crowd wasn't moving. We didn't get inside until almost 9pm. That was after security checked our bags and made sure no one bought in any water. They were turning people away that had camo bags with water in them. Finally, we get it in and it takes another 20 minutes for our group to get moving. We are still in this crowd. Fast forward and the race gets moving and it's not separated properly so that people running had a clear path away from people that were walking. So you literally had to bob and weave through people to get by if you were actually running. I didn't see all this music along the course as promised. There were a few stations set up for selfies and whatnot but they were crowded. The worst part of it was the fact that there was not enough water along the course. They had 1 station set up and then another at the very end. How could you take water from people and then not give them any? And the water that they were giving was hot as if it had been sitting out all day in the 90-degree sun. As we neared the end of the race it started to rain. Security was demanding we leave out of Harbor Park. Then as we were walking out security on the other side was making people come in to get out of the Thunder. What a mess. They were selling $7 draft beer at the end no complimentary cup, discount or anything for completing the race. This was a huge waste of my time a well as money. Due to the lightning, they canceled the after party festivities which was the biggest reason for the race. There was supposed to be a DJ or concert or something. there was a good chance of rain and people had been asking on their facebook page all day would they be rescheduling for inclement weather and they chose not to. This almost feels like a scam and people should stay away

I know it's just a 5k but they should have had people begin in waves based on their estimated walk/run time. Putting both walkers and runners together made for the biggest cluster f*ck imaginable. Sure, no one cared for the race time but getting stuck behind a group of walkers actually makes it dangerous. A kid on a wagon with his dad pulling it face planted 200 steps into the run. Poor kid. Hope the kid was okay. The dancing/music stations looked pretty cool. One person described it as people high on molly having a good time. I would run this again if there seems to be some organization to it.

From registering for the Shamrock Half, to the expo, the race itself, and the post-race after party, I thought everything was amazing. The Expo (Va Beach Convention Ctr): I picked up my bib on the 1st day, so it was somewhat crowded; however, things moved pretty smoothly. While I did not stick around to enjoy the festivities, there were plenty of vendors and things to do with the family to get the full expo experience. Like most expos, there were plenty of things to buy, but I did not get a sense that I was going to be harrassed to buy anything. Race day: This is a great race because the course is pretty flat. While most of it is a bit in and out for the half marathon, there are plenty of fun sights to see while running. The fluids stations were fully stocked, and there were not any major bottle necks at the start line and during the course. If I could make one change to the course, I wanted to spend more time running on the boardwalk. Other than that small complaint, everything was great. Post-race celebration: Here is where the real party was located. I was 100% pleasantly surprised that J&A Racing hosted the post-race party INSIDE of a huge pavilion tent because the temps were in the mid to high 30s. Swag: You definitely will get a lot of cool stuff with your registration fee. Pre- and post-race swag included a long-sleeve tech shirt, beach towel, cap, four beer tickets, a cup of a Irish stew (technically, soup), bag, and a bunch of snacks. *I feel like I'm missing something.* A couple of tips: -Be very careful with parking. Some of the tow truck companies were very predatory and towing cars left and right. -Arrive early to find well-priced parking. A few places were charging $35+ for day parking. This was disgusting because I'm sure they jacked up their prices because it was marathon weekend, which occurs during the off season. Fortunately for me, the parking garage at 25th St charged only $10 for 24 hr parking.

The Outer Banks Marathon is a 26.2 mile journey that starts from Kitty Hawk, NC and eventually ends up in the town of Manteo on Roanoke Island. This race is a relatively small race, which boasts its destination due to it being in the Outer Banks and just the small town nature of the area. I arrived here the night before after completing the 2012 Richmond (VA) marathon that day. Driving 3 hours after rocking 26.2 miles ain't real fun, but you gotta do what you gotta do, especially when you have traveled such a long way to do what needs to be done. The Outer Banks Marathon's organization was great and the volunteers were excellent in cheering on everyone, especially those at the back of the pack - like me. The course weaved through the sleepy rural area of Kitty Hawk and winded slowly south bound to Manteo. Along the way, runners were treated to the beauty that was the Outer Banks, especially with picturesque views at mile 6. The trail at miles 10-12 were not particularly my cup of tea, so that was just a bit of miles that I had to overcome and conquer to complete the marathon and claim North Carolina for my states collection. I particularly liked the aid station at mile 12, which served up banana bread, just before that wicked, but short uphill stretch within the trail section of the course. That really hit the spot when my stomach started to grumble for food. The only thing that I didn't like about the course was the vast stretch of the South Croatian Hwy heading towards Manteo. I know you do need 26.2 miles of road, but I found it to be quite tedious on that stretch, especially when it's mid day and the only thing keeping you mentally sane is the fact that the finish line is where it all ends and you'd get a finisher's medal for completing the course too. The course winds into 2 subdivisions from mile 13.1 through 25, each with about 2 miles a piece. I thought those houses over there were pretty nice and maybe I could move there when I am old, gray, and a bit senile too. But I am far from that anyway. The aid stations were adequate and I do love the volunteers enthusiasm, especially when I get those motivation and inspirational comments, since I told them about me running my 50th marathon that morning in the Outer Banks. I still continue to love those "omg you ran that many marathons?" reactions when I tell them. It's one of those things that makes me wonder if I have 50 more marathons left in me to reach 100 marathons (and beyond). Time will tell, but I am glad that I made this trip to the Outer Banks this year and finished the marathon for my 50th lifetime and 30th state. Thank you to the marathon bike support personnel, who guided us and provided aid to us whenever we needed it. I even pleaded to one of those bike patrol personnel, who was named Kit, to please not close down the bridge @ mile 22, since I am from Hawaii and NEED TO COMPLETE THIS MARATHON to check off North Carolina!!!! I'm glad that everything worked out alright and did cross that finish line. The special thing that happened at the finish line, where a friend of mine and fellow Marathon Maniac and 50 State Marathoner from NC, screamed out loud to those nearby (volunteers and others) that it was my 50th marathon and I am from Hawaii, as I crossed through the finish line and into history. I heard applause and that was always a special thing to reach a milestone. Thank you to you, Scot Barco for doing so (if you ever read this Yelp post)! With that said, this marathon is great. I love the small town atmosphere and I loved being in the Outer Banks. Wish I stayed longer though. Great race. Recommended if you are in the area. Support local! Run more! B+
