I'm going to preface this review with a disclaimer--my parents own this restaurant so some people may see my review as potentially biased. But some people also think being a Yelper makes them royalty and they derive Karen powers from Elite status so... The past reviews I skimmed through are right--it's not the most exciting "Chinese" food ever. But then again, real Chinese food probably wouldn't fit the local culture all too well. So, if you are in fact seeking genuine Chinese cuisine... the closest Chinatown that exists is in Chicago and OMA airport is just 1.5 hours away. Now, if you're a true local who has seen the restaurant evolve over the years, then you will know just how much love and effort the owners, Susan and Bob, have put into their restaurant and the food. The exterior walls were recently repainted a tan/beige color. Previously it was a stone and white paint exterior. In the past, there would occasionally be racist slurs graffitied on the white walls, which Bob always painted over promptly to ensure guests hopefully didn't have to see such unpleasantries. The interior decor is rather tacky looking in my opinion--but it looks like every other "Chinese" restaurant in small-town Midwest. A neat fact many people may not realize, the paintings that line the walls are hand painted by Bob himself. He was an artist in China before moving to the U.S. There's no music playing in the restaurant but that's because the owners would need to undergo a ton of paperwork and licensing procedures to be able to do so--which isn't exactly something you have time to do when you spend 6 days a week working in the restaurant with the 7th day being dedicated to food prep and administrative duties.. All of the food is prepared fresh in-house, including the breaded chicken, orange sauce, sweet and sour sauce, and crab rangoons. Well, ALMOST all of it is...I am sad to report that the non-existent Anaheim peppers are only figments of people's imagination and the JALAPEÑOS are obviously not grown in the kitchen. (SHRUG) Many people travel to Beatrice and to Shanghai Inn for the crab rangoon and lo mein especially, though. The lo mein recipe is a proprietary in-house recipe that you won't find anywhere else. Lastly, what really gives this restaurant that authentic feel of a "Chinese" restaurant is the fact that the owners still have an accent. They've worked tremendously hard to assimilate into a town that initially was rather weary of newcomers, including learning a new language without taking any classes to do so. So, in a town that has managed to somehow shrink from 13k people to 10k people over the course of 25 years, Shanghai Inn is the only "Chinese" restaurant remaining and I dare say it--for damn good reason. Overall, they get four stars instead of five because their restaurant hours are annoying as their daughter who never gets to see her parents because they're always busy working and trying to impress the food critics who clearly should quit their day jobs, instead. (This is pure sarcasm by the way.) Go, keep your expectations in alignment with the location, enjoy some American Chinese food that is prepared fresh, and for gods sake, tip like a decent human being--or just go to a fast food restaurant or the frozen aisle at the store. We normally visit once or twice when in the area for vacation....First time since new ownership a week ago....Food is very good, service is amazing and the place looks great with a fresh coat of paint and updated table lay out. For small town America, the food here is definitely worth the price, portions are huge (extensive menu options including vegan/vegetarian) and they are very focused in making sure everything is up to par, and that everyone is happy and fully satisfied....Highly recommend them for your Chinese food cravings...Thank you, and best of luck!!! read more

first off I rate each restaurant as a standalone restaurant because you can't come Shanghai inn to say a chain fast food place. 1. Food , Portion size excellent, speed to table, top notch general profile exactly what I had hoped for not overly spicy just right for each level. Price yes, it is a little on the pricier side, but I would expect that for fresh food and boy is their food fresh, hot and tasty. 2. Service there were not many folks in there the day me and my kids picked up our food to go but take out is take out just disappointed in no delivery or ever hooked up with door dash. Finally, 3 Ambiance, this is the only category where they are truly lacking, it's like taking a step back in time to the late 80's but then again if I wanted a show Shanghai inn is not where I would go. We've eaten at Shanghai Inn frequently over the many years we lived in Beatrice. ( Kaixi and Jackson, the owner's children, were my piano students. Their other child, Jordan, is a musical prodigy in my opinion although I didn't teach him. He is an exceptional pianist and the local violin teacher ran out of things to teach him because he learned everything so fast.) However, I like their hot and sour soup and crab rangoon these days. I used to order their sweet and sour chicken and liked it very much. The reviewer who said they are very accommodating is correct. When I learned I had heart problems and am salt restricted, owner Susan said to stay away with menu items with dark sauce. Order items with white sauce. If you prefer white rice instead of their fried rice, just tell the waitress. They will add green pepper and onion to sweet and sour chicken if you ask. A very high price for bland on bland. I wanted to like this place. The staff was friendly and the place seemed busy but we were disappointed. For 2 adults and 3 kids for lunch we paid just shy of $100.00. I would have been ok with that if the food was worth it but sadly it wasn't. I will say the entrees were decent sized so that was good but the amount we all left behind was also decently sized. I ordered a spicy chicken dish and asked for it to be "extra, extra spicy". It was syrupy sweet with almost no heat to it at all. My daughter got jalapeño beef also hoping for the spice but it was super bland as well and had Anaheim peppers on it not jalapeños. I feel like that is a good summary of how they treat food, thinking that mild Anaheim Peppers and the same flavor as jalapeños. Everything was just super bland and sad. We ordered Beef and Broccoli, Sweat Sour Chicken and came home to eat. Absolutely the worst food we've ever had. The Breaded Chicken was soggy, looked like it a couple days old, Beef and Broccoli, the beef was ok but the broccoli was soggy, was black on the tips, and this looked about 5 days old. Never again will we get food from this restaurant. I guess they think they can serve substandard food since they're the only Chinese restaurant in town. I really hate leaving bad reviews but owners need to know what their customers are experiencing. The lady behind the counter was very nice and thankfully had us pay before we were served our food. The place looked clean and nice inside. Unfortunately I can't say anything good about the food. My wife and I have NEVER got up and walked out due to the quality of the food until today. It was awful. It tasted like week old leftovers that had been reheated many times. The beef in the dishes was way over cooked- I mean way over cooked and we were questioning if the chicken was truly chicken. The egg drop soup was unrecognizable and so salty my wife couldn't eat it. We ordered a lot of food to help the restaurant as we know how places are suffering from Covid and left 90% of it on the table. My guidance to the restaurant is to cook fresh food or close down until you can - perhaps after the pandemic. We are wondering if we will get sick now. It was that awful. read more

The food is served hot and delicious. What I like most about this place is how you can customize your order and they're so willing to accommodate you. Want to add extra vegetables to your dish? Want to add vegetables to a dish that normally doesn't have vegetables? Extra sauce? Less sauce? Just let them know. Prices are very reasonable. Decent place on the inside for this region of Nebraska. Hot and sour soup was ok. Light in color. Kinda looked like spiced up egg drop soup. I like mine a bit spicier. Hand folded Crab Rangoon's only had strait cream cheese. Upsetting. Ordered seafood special bc of previous review. Sauce was good Teriyaki like. Full of fake crab. Had one. Just one shrimp in it. Breaded almost like it was in the wrong dish. Counted three pieces of scallop. It was 9.00 for small seafood plate. I got take out. It was a lot for 9.00$ just kinda pissed they used a bulk of the meat as fake crab. Proceed with caution. But I would try again with a wiser mind. read more

I don't eat a lot of Chinese food, but went here to try their seafood special I had heard about, and was very pleased. Shrimp, scallops, and crab meat in a brown sauce which was rich and not "twangy", with broccoli, carrots, etc., with a big pile of steamed rice. Very good. read more

Nothing special, the server was nice enough and the food was okay. I enjoyed how it was served almost as if it was a three course meal. Sadly the chicken was overcooked and the hot garlic sauce was almost too bold, it was over stimulating and made finishing the plate nearly impossible. Furthermore, the hot garlic dish is like 70% mushrooms. If mushrooms aren't your thing stay clear. If chicken is your thing also stay clear. Also the server was smoking a cigarette about 5ft from the door on our way out. I've dined at the Shanghai Inn on several occasions while in or on my way through Beatrice. I consider it good enough to plan a stop there if I'm in the area. I'd award it 3.5 stars, but for the area, I am rating it higher. The food is typical of most Chinese restaurants. I've tried their Hot and Sour Soup, Egg Rolls, General Tso's Chicken and Shrimp in Garlic Sauce, among other menu items. The cleanliness and typical Chinese decor was above average, and the service attentive, with carryout service available as well. I especially enjoyed their iced tea, which is a blend of Oolong and Jasmine, something I've not found elsewhere. While it's not a destination restaurant, the Shanghai Inn is certainly deserving of a stop if you're in the area. Visited: 2010-2011. read more

We went here the other night for an order to go. HUGE MISTAKE!!! We ordered a FULL order of sesame chicken without any vegetables, fried rice without veggies, a quart of house special lomein, a quart of hot sour soup. The sesame chicken had vegetables in it and was a combo meal (half sesame chicken and plain fried rice) and not a FULL order. The fried rice was beef not pork. The house special lomein had no vegetables, the noodles were linguini noodles NOT lomein noodles, and it tasted sweet, which is NOT normal. The hot sour soup is suppose to have slivers of pork in it and it didn't, also it was a bland hot and sour. I've worked and managed a few Chinese restaurants in New York and know how to cook Chinese foods. I will never go back there and do NOT recommend it!!! They get ZERO 's. read more
