Great prices for Chinese dumplings and noodles. Got the deep fried wontons and peanut & sesame pork noodles. First time having pork fried wontons, very crunchy maybe a little too crunchy. Lots of meat filling but taste is ok. The dry peanut and sesame noodles had an interesting flavour, the noodles were touchy but also soft. I saw this place recommended on r/Ottawa and am so glad I did, because I didn't notice this place when walking by the area previously. I got the #2 - pork and shepherds purse dumplings and it was $12 for 10 huge ones! Each one was fully with lots of meat and shepherd's purse (it was my first time trying this vegetable and it added a nice texture). The soup was not overly heavy and exactly what I was looking for. I was able to add chilli oil and the table which added a nice bit of heat but not too much. A couple of friends have been to this hole-in-the-wall noodle joint. Both highly recommended it. As someone who trusts their judgment without any hesitation, I headed over here as part of my revisiting ByWard Market. I parked at a parking lot by Courtyard by Marriott and casually walked over to Shanghai Wonton Noodle. It wasn't difficult to find. I walked in and a man greeted me. The process to order is to head to the counter and order there. You pay first, seat yourself, and the food comes to you. I ordered the following items: - Diet Coke - Pork wontons (ten) in peanut sauce - Beef noodle soup I had been craving dumplings well before I had arrived in Ottawa. Pork wontons would do the trick. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and tipped. It was that easy. I grabbed a can of Diet Coke from the fridge. It was cold and perfect on a hot summery day. You can also get hot and cold water from a dispenser. My pork wontons in peanut sauce came to me first. I had brought my appetite. The pork filling in each wonton was solid. You got a decent amount of it in each one. The wonton wrapper was yummy. I liked that you got more dough because the wrapper was thicker and held the filling nicely. They looked handmade. They had a rustic look to them, which I loved. Yay, carbs! The peanut sauce was delicious. Not too salty. Not sweet. Perfect. I added chili oil to it because it needed a kick. The chili oil was fantastic here! If I had brought Tupperware, that jar of oil would have disappeared... haha! My beef noodle soup came out next. It was also excellent. It's crazy that I ordered hot food on a hot day. The beef was tender and sliced. It was the perfect size to have a bit of it with with each helping of noodles. The noodles were enjoyable to devour. They were chewy and perfectly cooked. The broth was also nice. It wasn't salted to death. I loved it, especially with the greens and green onions that made you feel like you weren't simply eating carbs and protein. The interior did look like it has seen better days. From the looks of it, it is definitely a mom and pop shop - we even seen the grandmother making dumplings in the kitchen! They were quite busy taking orders and preparing food meaning the dining area was quite lacking. The tables were quite dirty, but nothing you can't look past. Once we ordered the food, we chose our seat and poured our own water from the water filter near the front. We were pleasantly surprised when we received our food, inhaling everything. Quantity over quality makes the soup a bit of a nightmare. Food delivery people are always coming in and out, and it makes sense. The restaurant is filthy. The person I came with mentioned that washrooms are dirtier than gas station toilets. Yeah, I even imagine that smell. After many years in China, we always crave for some authentic Chinese food. Ottawa has never been known for this. But it has improved in a somewhat surprising way, especially on Rideau St. This small Chinese restaurant, which doesn't attract any particular attention, is worth putting on everyone's map. A wonderful find in a somewhat sketchy part of Rideau St. The place is not what your expecting when see it from the outside, but you will be quite surprised by the food. They use homemade noodles and dumplings, and you could have them in a soup or dry with a variety of spices. I have been there four times now and my favorites are the pork wonton soup, the beef noodle soup, the vegetable noodle soup, and the pork mushroom one Thanh soup. As you can see, everything I had in there was outstanding. My wife is particularly fond of the vegetable noodle soup, which uses a homemade beef broth. This is my go to noodle place in Ottawa. The food is ALWAYS on point and the prices are cheap. The place is kind of dirty, but honestly , I dont mind because I just eat and leave. They prepare the food really fast which is what I appreciate. They also have a lot of take out. There's a lot of students who eat here from the university of Ottawa close by due to the affords me pricing. Lots of Asians eating here as well due to the authentic Shanghainese taste. I had lunch here recently. The place is a bit run down looking, but the food was fantastic! I had the Shepherd's Purse Wontons in peanut sauce $7.98. The wontons were gigantic! You get 10 per order and this was enough for my lunch. The filling is ground pork and shepherd's purse, which I learned was a leafy green plant. The wontons were cooked perfectly, not too soft/mushy. The peanut sauce was tasty. It was not as thick and rich as most places, which is fine by me. Although I found it a little too mild. I'm accustomed to this dish being a little spicier. Although I know it by the name "Hunan Dumplings." Maybe these are different and from a different part of China and are not supposed to be spicy? I don't know, but they were delicious! Staff were nice. So you order at the counter, pay and then sit down. They bring you your food when it's ready. It's a very casual eatery. Despite this, the man who took my order came by when I was part way through my meal and asked me if I was enjoying the food. I thought this was very nice. There is a serve yourself water dispenser that dispenses both hot and cold water. The place is not the most aesthetically pleasing to me. The garbage can near the water dispenser is really grimy looking on the outside and could probably be replaced. I feel that the walls could use a good scrub and a fresh coat of paint. I feel that if they cleaned up the place just a little bit, they would attract more customers. When I was there, it was the peak of lunch time and they weren't super busy. Customers were mostly Asian university kids. The place is not large. It has 5 tables for 4, 1 table for 2, and "bar seating" along the wall for 3 single diners. It also shares it's space with Bar Burrito. So Shanghai Wonton Noodles is at the front and Bar Burrito is at the back (Bar Burrito has it's own seating). So it's like 2 restaurants next to each other with no physical divider/barrier. I've seen this "space sharing" set up a lot in Montreal, but I've never seen it in Ottawa before. The dumplings themselves are very umami and filling, so you'll be full and satisfied once you're done. - Pan-fried dumplings (7): yes. Works well with vinegar sauce. Works well as a side. - Marinated egg (19): It's a dollar egg, but it does wonders in terms of flavour. Add it to your soup and you've got yourself a meal. This place is good, but marketing failure keeps it fairly secret. Even looking for them and knowing the address, I still walked past twice. The storefront signage advertises several businesses that are NOT the restaurant you are looking for. Even though they are the front-most store of a shared space, their sign is the smallest, just a modest paper rectangle low, in the glass display window, rather than in the topmost signage where people would actually look as they walk along a street looking for a business. The food was homemade, fast, and very decent for the price. Tried beef noodle and added the marinated egg for only an extra $1. The husband-wife team work hard and productively and everything is made to order. It's charming in an Asian vendor stall mom-and-pop operation kind of way. The owner/proprietor barks a calm "ni yao shenme?!" at everyone in an efficient but uninviting manner. The place is heavily visited by Mandarin-speakers and has a lot of authenticity/cred: 25+ people came through as I ate at Monday dinnertime, and only one was non-Asian. This might not mean much in a different area, but this is Rideau just off the Market, so you know this food is legit. Definitely a great bowl of noodle soup on a cold day! Initially when you are walking by you won't quite notice the restaurant as they share it with a burrito place! Yup!! The burrito sign is at the top and then only on the glass is the sign for the noodle place! But the noodle place is at the front of the space and the shared burrito is at the back. There are pictures so it's easy to figure out what to order. I ordered their famous/well known beef noodle soup and their fried mushroom wontons. Both were delish! There are also hot sauces on the side if you want to add some spice kick to your bowl of noodles. I quite enjoyed their wontons even though they were not as traditionally Shanghai food style per se. I personally like usingthe dark vinegar to dip my wontons in. There are also what we call Lo mians which are more like a dry noodle.
