Nice flavor with authentic broth. 'Love the duck soup. Good place to go if you have a group of 4-5.

This was my first time eating hotpot ever! I always saw it on Merivale but never tried it until now. I'm so glad I went. The place is organized well with tables and booths for separate pots and group pots. It was quite empty due to the current situation going on in the world. Luckily our service was very quick and the waitress answered all our questions. I went with my siblings and we all got one large pot with 3 soup bases (see pictures). We ordered all the meat we could and some veggies. There's a sauce station where you can make your own concoctions or follow Liuyishou's recommendations (ingredients given on paper). The food came quite quickly and we were given a boiling time sheet (so you know how long to the food). Everything tasted absolutely amazing and I'm definitely going back!! I recommend going in a group because it can get pricey however you get what you pay for. Great quality! Our total came to around $128. Not bad for 4 adults. It's not AYCE by the way! Just go there and try anything that interests you. See my pictures for what I ordered. Try the Chinese doughnuts (bread) too (forgot to take a picture). Overall fantastic experience :)

One word: expensive! The bill for 3 people was almost $70, so it would be better to come here with more friends so you can get more variety! Everything is definitely very fresh however. First off, you can choose your size of pot, as well as if you want spicy/non-spicy (you can have both)! Tip: the non-spicy broth is delicious to drink after you are done as a soup...all the flavours of the veggies and meat really complement the broth! Then you pay $2.50 per person to have access to the sauce station, as well as unlimited appetizers near the sauce station (wood fungus, cabbage...and fruits)! Then on your sheet you can pick the meats/veggies you want. I would recommend half sizes (which you can get with almost everything except the platters) for more variety! The place was very modern and comfortable. It was packed, so service can be slow. I had to ask for iced water twice (for the spicy broth)! They give you tea, and you can ask for them to bring the tea pot for your table's use. I only tried the lamb, which was tender and fresh, as well as a few veggies. When you leave, you don't stink like hotpot unlike Mongolian hot pot! I imagine it would be lovely in winter when it's freezing, but they had ample A/C on in the hot weather.

A well known hotpot from China, the Ottawa location is their 885th location.

It's a great cozy place, for a chinese fondu (Hot pot), they offer real fresh meat and veggies. You can choose single or split soup base, perfect for a group of friends where some like spicy and some prefer simple flavour. The service is okay, I'd expect a little more from a large franchise restaurant. Be sure to try their hand battered shrimp patty, boil it to make shrimp ball. Super tasty and super fresh!

Half wild mushroom soup base, half traditional spicy soup base (mild but pretty spicy). Same price as choosing 1 soup base.

Protip = Not AYCE. Better value if you come with more people! Now onto the actual review... AMBIANCE = The interior is much nicer than what you'd typically expect in a restaurant in these strip malls. I think all tables have comfy benches - half the store is big hot pot (everyone share one pot) and the other half is for individual pots. Nice lighting, good ventilation considering it's a hotpot place. FOOD = SO MANY CHOICES. Broths were great. I liked the mushroom one. If you can't do spicy, the spicy broths may kill you lol. I can generally handle spicy and I almost died...but then maybe that's because I tried to eat the vermicelli that disintegrated at the bottom and ended up chewing on the deathly spicy herbs/pepper bits...so....don't do that. Note for the future: their vermicelli cooks really fast so don't let go of it from your chopsticks, just dip! (Some other kinds take forever to cook but this is not the case here.) All the items we ordered were fresh and clean. I recommend the wintermelons! SERVICE = Generally great. They spend time with you explaining how to order, answer all your questions, and are pretty prompt when you flag them down when you need stuff. (This is a Chinese style restaurant so if you need something you have to call them, otherwise they won't come check on you.) When they get busy it's hard to get their attention though. PRICE = It adds up pretty quickly if you're just 2-3 people. For the 2 of us it came to like...$45-50 after taxes and tip. If I go next time, I'll be sure to bring more people.

very nice customer service. Music can be a bit loud sometimes. Big portions of side foods. Really nice spice area where people can get their own spices. Free wifi

Really authentic Sichuan hot pot. Great service and great food. Highly recommend! The cold jelly dessert is a must try.

Great service and exceptional quality. This a A la carte hot pot franchise from China. You definitely get what you pay for. The meat and vegetables are fresh. The service is top notch. The employees look after you making sure your table is cleared and not overcrowded. The traditional spicy secret soup base is a definite must have as is their special pork rib soup base. Their sauce bar is diverse. I would recommend a reservation as the restaurant has only about 20 tables and seats about 80-100.

It was our first-time trying it because the original restaurant we wanted to go to on Somerset was closed, but we were definitely not let down. They open at 11:30 on the weekend and we were a bit early but the staff was super friendly and accommodating- letting us sit down, browse the menu and even place our order before they "officially" opened. Out of all the dine-in korean restaurants we've tried so far in Ottawa (which I know is quite limited and most aren't authentic- but that's not to say they aren't good): Alirang, Maht, Daldongnae, etc. This is definitely top tier AND we will be coming back. As a small business, they are generous with their refillable complimentary side dishes (which is so yum), the flavour HITS, and the service is so good and welcoming. They kept checking in with us, turned down the volume to the TV that we were sitting under, and kept refilling our tea. inside the restaurant is also quite spacious and has comfortable seating arrangements. The Short Version: Instant hot pot restaurant. I had the…read morevegetable set meal for one and it was delicious. "Mild" was quite spicy, lol. Service was excellent. The Long Version: My first time having "instant hot pot" where the kitchen cooks all the ingredients for you and your soup comes out in a bowl (as opposed to traditional hot pot, where you're brought raw ingredients and you cook it yourself in the boiling broth at your table). This is great when you're by yourself (which I was), because hot pot is like a communal and social meal, but I was hungry and just wanted to eat, lol. They have two options for instant hot pot at Mr. Maocai, they have set meals and choose your own ingredients meals. If you choose your own ingredients you are charged by the ingredients (starting at $2.39 each for vegetables, the price is higher for meat ingredients). The set meals are a better deal if you like all the ingredients in the set meal. I chose the vegetable set meal for one ($18.80). This came with cauliflower, konjac knots, tofu skin, enoki mushrooms, tribute vegetable, potato slices, black fungus, Napa cabbage and potato noodles. I got it in the mild spicy hot pot broth. So the spiciness levels are mild, medium, hot, and hell (LOL). I don't want to know what hell tastes like because the mild was quite spicy for me. Haha. My nose was running and I had tingly lips. Nonetheless I enjoyed it. The broth was flavourful although it had a bit of a sour taste that I wasn't too fond of, but the sourness wasn't overpowering. The meal usually comes with a bowl of rice, but they ran out of rice so offered me Shanghai noodles or instant noodles and I chose Shanghai noodles. I think I actually prefer to have noodles in the soup over a bowl of rice on the side. So lucky me (especially since the a la carte price of the noodles is more than that of the rice). The Sweet potato noodles were thick and chewy and so delicious. My favourite ingredient in my hot pot. The konjac knots were konjac noodles tied up in a knot. I loved these. It was my first time having Tribute vegetable. It's the stem of a leafy green vegetable that it shaved, then dehydrated and then later rehydrated. It had an interesting crunchy texture and I quite enjoyed it. The black fungus was cut into little strands. They were nice and chewy. The cauliflower was still al dente which I liked. It wasn't soft and mushy. The potato slices were also al dente. I always love enoki mushrooms, so was thrilled that these were in my soup. The Napa cabbage was soft, but I didn't mind this. The tofu skins were chewy. I actually prefer the dehydrated bean curd sheets over these fresh tofu sheets, but that's just a personal preference. The Shanghai noodles were a little thinner than I expected, but they were nice and chewy and I'm really glad they ran out of rice for my order. Haha. The portion size was excellent. I had enough for lunch and had leftovers for dinner. They give you a pitcher of water for your tablet, which I appreciated because my "mild" soup was spicy! Lol. Service was courteous and efficient. The server asked if it was my first time there and when I said it was, she explained their process to me. She checked in on me and was helpful in getting me containers to pack up my leftovers. They have a sauce bar, but I didn't use it. Decor is nice with a bright red and yellow colour scheme. Street parking only. I highly recommend Mr. Maocai for instant hot pot. Review #61 (2026)

I had been to all the restaurants in the plaza before except for Chinese Dragon BBQ, so I figured why not check it out. Now I consider myself quite adventurous when it comes to food, but after reviewing the menu at Chinese Dragon BBQ, I have realized that my adventurousness is limited to spices/flavours and methods of cooking, and maybe fruits and vegetables. When it comes to unusual animals or unusual body parts of usual animals, I am much less adventurous. Pig ears, beef aortas, lamb kidneys, and duck heads? I think I'll pass, lol. I ended up ordering a plate of dumplings stuffed with pork, eggs, and chives ($10.99). The dumplings were boiled, and I got 10 of them. I was asked if I wanted soy sauce or black vinegar as dipping sauce, and I went with the vinegar. The dumplings had a good amount of filling in them - ground pork, scrambled eggs and chopped chives. The outside was nice and chewy and not overly thick. They were good, but I have had better dumplings elsewhere. However, it's obvious that dumplings are not the specialty here and it's organ meats on skewers and other such exotic things for which they are known. Service was good. They brought me a whole water pitcher for myself. I drink a lot of water, so I loved this. The restaurant is clean looking and a good size. It's in the same plaza as Food Basics, Nando's, Shoppers Drug Mart and Tutti Frutti. Lots of free parking. This restaurant is not my jam, but if you're looking for Chinese BBQ with items like those I mentioned earlier then this is your place. I have not been to any other restaurant in Ottawa where I have seen these things on the menu. After I left, the traffic had cleared up, so I'm glad I stopped in to get some food. I didn't find it fantastic, but I have no regrets! :)

They're owned by the same people and often move food between the two shops. Chinese Dragon BBQ is the larger of the two siblings, being able to accommodate not only 4 times the amount of people but also a larger menu, featuring - you guessed it - Chinese (not dragon) BBQ. It also has more traditional Northern Chinese stir-frys and hot pots. Many of the options are spicier than the run-of-the-mill Chinese food (which is more of the Southern Chinese variety) but just as good. We've been twice now, once for the BBQ and the second time for the stir-frys and hot pot. The BBQ items, which come skewered, were a bit pricey, about $3+ per, and salty. Thus the second time, we focused mainly on the other items. We bought the Soft-Shelled Crab Fried Rice and a fish hot pot that didn't have an English name associated with it. They were reasonably priced and tasty. However, all of the food we ordered seem to be very greasy. My favourite was the fried rice. The seasoning was perfect with a good amount of "wok-air" but as soon as it cooled down, you could taste (and see) the amount of oil there. Similarly, a thick layer of oil could be found in the hot pot, which isn't terrible when hot but doesn't make you feel great afterwards. The service is, for the most part, attentive, making sure your water is filled and that you have everything you need. They come to check on you quite often but sometimes, you'll have to put in some effort to flag them down, especially if you're seated in a inconspicuous spot (you choose your own seats if it's not too busy). If you're looking to experience a different kind of Chinese food, it's worth a shot - we'll probably be back too since they carry dishes that few other restaurants have. It may not be the best idea for your health to go often though...
