The staff are wonderful, friendly and very knowledgeable about the type of music I was searching for! Great selection of rock, blues, soul, punk and metal. Great prices, clean records VG grade prices are perfect!!

My favorite store in Memphis for used vinyl (with a smaller selection of used cds). A wonderful selection of rock, soul, and r&b, with prices much better than in my current hometown, St Louis. Other genres are also available, but I had limited time to browse on my first visit. Great selection of Stax records! Good organization, but sometimes overwhelming volume of product. Finally, kudos to the friendly, knowledgable staff. I expect that I will make a beeline for this shop every time I'm in Memphis!

Shangri-La is by far and away one of the best record stores I have had the pleasure of stepping foot into. I cannot get over how huge the selection is! This place is 3 rooms full of vinyl, cds, LPs, books and posters. They also have a pretty large selection of music magazines- old of course. The staff here was tremendously helpful as well. They went out of their way to help me locate some local Memphis music I might like based on some other favorite bands of mine. Speaking of local music- Shangri-La takes the cake. They have a such a huge selection to choose from. As if that isn't enough, they have free in-store live shows on most Fridays featuring local bands trying to earn their mark in music history. They get major kudos for that. Not only is it great for the bands, but it allows me to hear some great local artists.

What a cool, retro music store. It's fun just walking in here. The staff was great. My reason for visiting was to sell some vinyl records and they purchased most of them. While I was there I looked around and loved the Memphis music section. There was a great variety. They also sell CDs and amps and the staff is great.

Do you have mail order for your t-shirts?…read more We were the couple that came by 2 weeks ago on 3 consecutive days/nights and bought the two green "Memphis - Music Forever " t-shirts and a coaster. We admired the vinyl records collection, especially the soul/R & B collection which were actually reasonably priced. Al Green, TP, EWF, and other superstars. Malcolm was there the first two nights and we chatted with him. He is the owner's son - but clearly is more or less the owner- and was so personable and friendly that he is THE reason we bought swag here. We checked out the other Beale Street souvenir shops but this place was more than a step above the others, way better! We went to Graceland, Sun Studio, Stax Music, Four Way restaurant, Cozy Corner bbq, Charlie Vergoss (overrated), Kooky Canuck, and Sunrise biscuits - but Memphis Music Records Tapes & Souvenirs had the best vibe of any of them (Four Way was a close second, highly recommend). All because of Malcolm and the variety of inventory they have. Thank you!!! I would've bought more but my suitcase couldn't handle more!

This is the experience I want when I dig through the racks - I'd rather this than finding THE record I want at full price plus or a bunch of might-be-goods made unattractive by pricing that's too high. While the selection here is decent, and there were records that grabbed my eye, there's also a lot of stuff that's readily available at any thrift store across the country, that should/would be in a dollar bin at most record stores. However, selection really isn't the issue. The problem is the fact that more than half of the records aren't priced and you have to bring them up to the counter for the employee to, if I had to guess, price via discogs listings. I suppose since you've shown interest in the records by bringing them up to the counter, they feel like they don't have to be competitive with their quotes - they definitely aren't beating online prices, not even with the cost of shipping excluded. Needless to say, this is an utter buzzkill; what a horrible tease it is to have something pique your interest, excitement and anticipation gathering as you walk to the counter and wait for a price, only to be told a number that you're not willing to pay, that instantly kills your joy, that you could have found without leaving your home and wasting the time and the gas. Seriously, stay at home, you'll get better deals on a better selection on discogs and/or ebay.
