I live on the South Shore, but I drive up to Somerville just to see CJ! CJ is perceptive to both the client's desires and also what will look good for each person. He clearly communicates what he plans to do, and he will pause to confirm your approval before continuing if it's a new look for you. This is THE most important quality in a barber, because I might have an idea for my haircut/beard trim in my mind, but the barber may see it differently. And now, since I completely trust CJ's judgement, I could walk in and say "Do whatever you want" and I wouldn't worry at all. It was CJ's judgement that led to my current beard style, and looking back it was obviously the right choice. If you need a new barber and don't know where to go, book CJ at either of The Shop locations. I've been going to CJ for years, so the move to The Shop was a no-brainer. Now I have a kid, and CJ cuts his hair, too - super convenient to get both done with one trip. My kid already had a few haircuts done before going to CJ, and CJ is amazing with kids. All the barbers in the place are respectful when we're there - they even sometimes change the music playlist to be kid-friendly, which is an awareness I really appreciate as a parent. The place is clean and welcoming, and the staff are efficient. Street parking is easy enough for the amount of time a haircut would take. I highly recommend CJ and 968 The Shop!

Since I moved, I hadn't been back until recently. I drove by here about ten days ago, and noticed their price! Much better than where I've been going, although there was nothing wrong with the quality. So I parked across the street and went in. There was no wait. the barber was a very nice guy and did a quality job in just a few minutes! This looks like an old-school barber tat harkens back to days gone by. Alibrandi's offers $12 haircuts or $10 for seniors and kids. Upon walking in, you're presented with a hodge podge of historic sports memorabilia. This place has been around for a long time. There were 2 gentleman giving haircuts and with no line, the older fella offered to give me a haircut. I should have walked out at this point because I knew the price was too good to be true, but I was already there and I figured why not, let's give him a try, it's a slow day! But boy... do i regret making that choice. I showed the man (in his 70s) a picture of a combover and asked to keep the top long and the sides short - a high skin fade. He abides and we commence. Immediately I knew this wasnt going to be good when he quickly started with a "0" and finished my sides under a minute. He then used 2 more guards to round out the fade and used some scissors to blend - missing to go over the area again to catch any loose hairs. When we were done I didnt get a 360 view of my haircut and was told I was done. While taking off the apron, half the hair spilled on my shoulders and there was no use of blow drying to remove the hair. I mean come on... Just tiny things like a blow dryer to remove hair and even spending a few extra minutes to pay attention to detail would have more customers lining up, but I guess there's a market for these fast and rough haircuts. If you're short of money and dont care much about what the end product is but just want to remove some hair because it's either getting in the way or too long, this could be a good bargain for you. This or just using some scissors at home. I would pay to have my hair back :( 1 star because they were nice at least.

I came in with an open-ended request (short, make it look good) and he gave me his ideas about what would look best. When he was finished, I was very very happy with it. He can make your hair look casual, make it look professional, make it look hip. I've come here every two months for the last 3 years. I've tried nearly every barbershop in the Harvard Square area - this one is by far the best. It's also a super fair price, only $20-$25 after factoring in tip. The shop was loud and typical for a Saturday morning--until a Black mother walked in with her two sons. The room went completely silent. For several minutes, the atmosphere shifted from welcoming to hostile through nothing but pointed silence and 'shifting eyes.' It was so palpable that the mother eventually bolted out of the shop with her children. The moment they cleared the door, the 'raucous' energy returned as if nothing had happened. It took me leaving the shop to fully process what I'd seen: a room full of people who collectively made a family feel unwelcome. Professional craftsmanship should be about service and community, but that day, it was used to exclude.
