Gym class for me was trying to stealth to the back of the line until class ran out. I was not, and still am not, terribly coordinated. But, Aerial arts seemed like a great way to build core, and a pretty unique hobby to boot. First day of class, we trained on three apparatuses: web (basically rope from gym class); tissue (sort of like climbing on mom's curtains); and trapeze (at about 4.5' rather than atop a giant circus tent). There's no slow move into Aerial arts: we will get strong and do circus. (Xelia's motto: Get strong, Have fun, Do Circus) Yesterday was session 4 of the 10-week session. I'm sore today and likely will be for the next few days. I left class yesterday accomplishing moves I couldn't do at my last class. I finished moves I struggled with at the beginning of last night's class. That is worth all the sore muscles today. Classes at Xelia's are meant to be taken on repeat. Session I is a mix of new students and returning. We rotate in small groups among 3 coaches who spot us and offer encouragement. It's physically demanding, and if you're like me, not too keen on heights, pushes comfort zones. I am excited re-evaluate my limitations as I progress.

While being supportive, everyone is coming from a variety of places in life and ages. I like it enough that I signed up for the upcoming Spring session. It's a crazy good workout. My arms are sore- but getting more accustomed to it all.

There is a strong sense of community community at Fly Freak - students and staff both are so accepting and encouraging. I love how everybody cheers when someone does a trick for the first time! I love chair dance (shout out to Kit!), aerial yoga (all the teachers for this are phenomenal) and Sling (my go to teachers are Clara, Christy and Hayley, but I've never had a instructor I didn't like!). I also love the workshops and special events - self defense classes, guardian and kiddo classes, sound baths and my personal favorite, photo shoots! If you're looking for a new obsession or even just want to try something different, you won't regret going to Fly Freak.

The staff is fantastic, the classes are wonderful, and the people are so friendly. The instructors she had were really encouraging, which made a big difference for my soft-spoken kiddo. I noticed that on days she went to class, she slept better and her overall mood improved. Since a lot of sports and physical activities for kids tend to be competitive, which isn't really her thing, Fly Freak has been a great alternative. If you're looking for a way for your child to move around that also helps with regulation, I definitely recommend giving Fly Freak a try!

Upon entering the building, I located room #9, where Stomping Ground is housed. I was surprised to find that 8 mins before the start time, the door was still locked. The instructor eventually arrived a few minutes after the start time which was a bit disappointing. It's a decent sized space, but a bit in disarray. Anyway, there were cubbies at the front where belongings could be tucked away. This included shoes which are not allowed on the performance/class floor. Although my skills were awful I still enjoyed myself. The instructor was very patient, helpful, and never made me feel like I was holding the class back. She showed several moves, and walked us through as we attempted them ourselves and while encouraging us, never pushed us beyond our comfort levels. About 2/3 of the way through the class, a child came in and was all over the place. It was a bit distracting especially as she continued to pull the instructors attention towards random things. Can't blame the kid (for being a kid), but I do think paid classes should feel more organized and less random. Anyway, I'm glad I tried the class.

The classes have a great ratio of students to teacher and apparatus, which allows for a little bit of rest time and plenty of practice time. The studio itself is such a cool space and is very clean! I hesitated to write a review and opted not to until I saw this randomly pop up on my facebook sponsored column...I noticed it only had two reviews with one being the owners, Melissa, so I am deciding to give an honest review with hopes it helps encourage others to do a bit of gym research before signing up. We have sent my son and daughter here when they were two and my daughter is now six and we have recently left this gym. We were never super happy about this facility and honestly thought of leaving several times with other girls that had joined and left throughout the sessions. We decided to stay because it literally is right down the street from where we live and also it's a bit cheaper than other gyms. It was frustrating the continuous lack of organization but bearable since my child was two, three, four, and five. Recently the owners invited our daughter to move up. I disagreed with it but with my husband and my daughter along with coaches encouraging her to move to compete...I was out numbered. I wanted my daughter to be happy. At first they helped a ton. More than I could have asked. That was for a total of probably two weeks. Then I felt they just left her off the radar and weren't teaching or even helping her at all. That was frustrating because now no longer was my daughter not having fun with her friends, she was now just being left to do whatever on her own while the coaches helped others get ready for tournaments. I felt it was poor timing to bring her up. All of this is not why I am rating this gym a one though. What you need to know is that since this we searched four other gyms and found a better fit for us. This gym is filthy. It's very dirty. The owners don't communicate well at all. They do not act like owners and if you need to get in contact with them it's a small chance they will get back to you through email or phone call. Also, the owner Melissa did talk poorly about another student and her mother to us, which I happen to be friends with. I don't think she knew that though. I think as an owner you should not be talking about your clients, and should be a good example for your teenage girls and coaching staff for being professional. Another problem was when you sign up for rec classes, the consistency of coaches is bon existent. Very rare did my daughter gave the same coach for a whole session. Also my daughter would have practice at 4:15. I would drive frantically to get there on time and would often times be sitting in the car waiting for the coaches to arrive. The owners are always late! So we would sit in the car with my crying baby waiting for the doors to be opened. Lastly, I never complained but was irritated, we paid about 200 to have an hour and a half birthday party there. When we arrived the upstairs where they left us it was filthy dirty, the party tables and chairs weren't set up, and they had toys all over the place which I had to clean up. One of the kids brought a younger sibling and they also charged us for her above and beyond. I get that it's an extra person but was kind of surprised since we have been paying year round since my daughter was two and now turned six. We were very frustrated by the end and after touring and trying out at the other gyms we realized this place was ridiculous which is such a bummer because we now drive 30 minutes out of our way and pay 40 more a month. I guess you get what you pay for.
