He will put your interests first, he knows the market, and he knows houses. Shaun helped us buy our first home in Old Town in 2015, helped us sell that home (well over list and what we paid) in 2020, and simultaneously helped us buy our current home 10 minutes south of Old Town. Each time, Shaun helped us navigate a multiple offer situation. You should absolutely pick Shaun to buy or sell your house and keep him in your contacts for the rest of your homebuying and selling life. We came to Shaun in 2015 having never bought a house before, let alone dealt with the Old Town housing market. He invited us to his office after business hours, outlined the home-buying process, and answered our numerous questions. It was readily apparent that Shaun was intimately familiar with Alexandria and the surrounding area, a fact that would become even more obvious over the subsequent six years of working with him. Shaun was interested in our home buying needs and was undeterred by the fact that we were recently married and saddled with student loan debt, trying to find something we could afford in Old Town. Shaun helped us identify listings and areas of Old Town that were good investments or that would meet our needs. If we saw a house online that we wanted to see, Shaun was incredibly responsive--he appreciates how fast houses sell in our area. For example, one time we emailed him at 6:00am about a house that went on the market that morning, and Shaun was showing us the house at 8:00am so that we could get to work on time. Unlike many realtors, Shaun will not attempt to push an overpriced property on you or a property that is not in your best interests. Shaun knows the comparables and has a keen sense of where the market is at. Shaun gave us critical perspective when we got swept up in the process and helped us make wise decisions. In 2015, we almost settled for an overpriced townhouse because it was one of the few on the market we could afford in Old Town. Shaun knew we could do better, and we did--we ended up in a townhome we absolutely adored in a north Old Town. Shaun had identified the property for us and said the home would be a good investment. On the selling side of things, Shaun had our backs and got us an amazing return on our investment. In spring 2020, we sold the townhome Shaun helped us buy, after we had already bought our new house with his help. We really needed our townhome to sell. Spring 2020 was the height of COVID-19 uncertainty. Despite being type A and at least one of us being a pathological worrier, we were unphased because we knew Shaun had us covered. Because we couldn't have an open house, Shaun had a company digitally stage our house for the listing. Multiple friends and family members couldn't tell that it was digital! The house needed some work done indoors and out--Shaun knew people who he called in to do the needed repairs. Some of the repairmen quoted high prices. Shaun negotiated the price down. Shaun recommended updating the oven, dishwasher, and microwave to newer models. There was an issue with the size of the space for the microwave, so Shaun fixed the space and installed it himself--we got a text from him that it was done around 10pm on a Friday night. He will alwaysgo the extra mile for you. We listed the house on Thursday late afternoon. The following Monday we had received nine offers for the house, eight above list. We ultimately sold the house for well above our list price. The buyer letter specifically referenced the new appliances as a reason that they loved the house. As for the home being a good investment, we sold the house for more than $140,000 above what we paid for it. The thing is: Shaun is so much more than a realtor. He knows real estate, but he also knows about houses. When looking at a listing, Shaun would check the windows, HVAC, and other utilities to determine their quality. (He would also generally get to the house early so that he could walk through before we got there.) He has a sense for what constitutes a good layout, whether the drainage in the backyard will be a problem, or whether that wall you might want to tear down is loadbearing. He uses that knowledge to help you buy the right house and list your house at its best. Shaun is also incredibly nice, funny, friendly, and easy-going. When we were looking for our current house, going to listings with Shaun was a blast. While Shaun always took our lead and let us come to our own conclusions on a place, we knew what Shaun's unvarnished opinion was worth. We know we asked him some nit-picky or overly worried questions, but Shaun always treated the questions as if they were reasonable, and he always had an answer. So please do work with Shaun. Shaun is a great realtor! When my family had to move down here, we moved within a couple weeks. A family friend introduced us to their family member Shaun Murphy. If you're looking to buy a home in Alexandria or Arlington, I can recommend Shaun Murphy without reservations. My wife and I had saved for several years to buy our first house. Although we had done a substantial amount of research on our own, we still had a number of questions. Shaun patiently walked us through all of these questions and helped us to navigate the home-buying process confidently. Shaun did an initial interview to assess our needs and then spent an afternoon and several evenings showing us houses. He worked around both of our busy schedules.
