My extended family and I had a great time at Shaw Orchards in the summer picking blueberries and raspberries. We arrived late in the season, but what's the efficient number of blackberries and blueberries were still available to pick. We just had to spend a little extra time picking which actually made it a little bit more fun. Wagons are available to pull your buckets so you and the kids don't have to carry them. The signage for the types of blueberries and blackberries and raspberries are adequate. This was my first time going there and we were able to find parking fairly easy because we arrive shortly after they opened. I can see how parking will be a little more difficult during the busy times. Bathrooms are on site that they are a little bit primitive. If you don't want to pick your own fruits, their store has some already picked for you but at a greater cost than if you picked them yourself plus other local produce and grocery items. read more

I was enjoying a Good Life Thursday evening at Boordy Vineyards when a delightful young woman approached my picnic area offering free samples of peaches and grapes. She was as sweet as the peaches she offered so I went over to her tent later on in the evening and was greeted by her and her equally adorable sister. They both pointed out a lonely carton of raspberries that seemed to whisper, "take me home." It was not the wine talking, it was the assertive, yet kind sales pitch and the freshness of the goods - "picked this morning!" These sisters are good! "Try one little grape, they are delicious!" I did. And they were. Sold! Raspberries and Peaches and Grapes. Oh my! I made sure to grab their brochure so I can visit their family farm soon. Hayride in the pumpkin patch? I have brought my girls to Shaw's to pick a couple different kinds of fruit. The employees are always very helpful and friendly, and can answer any questions my girls throw at them. Our favorite pick your own are the blueberries. There are two different patches, and the berries have been really good from both. The market part of Shaw's has a good variety of fresh produce as well as other related products. We definitely recommend checking out Shaw's, especially if you have kids...they'll love it there! read more

What an absolute gem and don't let the PA address fool you! This is a Maryland farm through and through -- they support the Real Food Farm in Baltimore, they sell at the Govans Farmers Market and they supply fruit for state meetings upon request!!! The staff is so super friendly and beyond helpful! Jana, the owner, is the biggest peach you will meet (and yes pun intended!) She goes above and beyond for her customers and that means a ton!! Overall, it is so important to eat seasonal, local fruits and vegetable not only because you are supporting a local farmer but because the money stays in the community and the produce is sweeter, juicier and more delicious!!! As the old saying goes, "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree" unless you kick it and it rolls two rows away. That being said, they have a great selection of PYO (on Saturday) and pre-picked apples plus cider and other produce plus a pumpkin patch for the kids. They even had some raspberries left when we went. The recently switched from per pound to per basket pricing, so fill 'em up to the top! read more

This review is specifically for their pick your own blueberries. I guess I had high hopes going in because practically every year growing up we'd go blueberry picking and leave with overflowing containers of obnoxiously fat and sweet blueberries. I still make the hours long drive back home to do so. It was not only fun but easy - the branches would be overgrown with the purple goodness that they'd hang down in your face begging you to pick them off and relieve them of the berries weighing them down. I did my research ahead of time and checked Shaw Orchard's "Ripeline" which stated "Our Blueberry picking is still going strong. The last variety (on the top row) is now ripening with the largest berries in the field." Excited about my prospects, I made the 55 min drive up to the PA line to get started right at 8AM when they opened. Well, I call bull about what their Ripeline says. When I arrived, I instantly knew I had been mislead about the state of their crops. Even the lady who greeted me said the blueberries were very picked over. Not off to a good start. Fast forward 2+ hours later and I finally decide to call it quits. I made it out with maybe 5 lbs. of blueberries for a whopping $3/lbs. Woah. A bit pricier that I expected, but fine - it is what it is. The real kicker to all this is now that I've begun baking with them, I'm finding out just how un-sweet they are. *sigh* Way to kick someone when they're down. read more

My boyfriend and I went here last year to do PYO apples. We were pleasantly surprised by the set-up. There's a cute country market at the entrance with all kinds of food (and lots of fresh produce) to buy. For apple-picking, they provide you with baskets (not every place does this so make sure to check before you go). After a short tractor-pulled wagon ride, you're left to roam the fields of apple trees. There were a ton of apple trees and when we went last year (mid-September), there were plenty of apples on most of the trees. Returning wagon rides back to the main lot ran periodically, maybe every 10 minutes or so. We had a great time and ended up with approximately 30 lbs of apples-- way more than we could handle so many were shared with friends and family! The check-out process was quick and service was very friendly. Additionally, there was a small pit beef stand next door that had sandwiches for about $6. They were very large and tasty! read more

This is a lovely local orchard. I got there last week at the beginning of the season for sour cherries. I was excited to see that they had nice shorter trees with lots of fruit on the trees. The price was good also. I am wearing a boot on my ankle that makes getting around difficult. I couldn't miss the cherries as there is no guarantee that there will be any next year as a freeze at the wrong time will wipe out the crop like what happened last year. I was suprised that I couldn't get my truck closer to the trees but again I really wanted the fruit so took my time and hoofed it out. What was kinda surprising and more than a little irritating was as we got closer to closing time Twof the girls working there came out to remind us that they were closing in 15 min. I was a ways out from the stand and it was going to take every bit of that time to carry the bucket back. It was disappointing that they made me feel like I was an inconvenience, they thought they would have to wait for me to hobble back but they did not offer a ride on the golf cart they were on or even to take my full bucket back for me. After I made it back, paid for the produce and was most of the way back to my truck one of them yelled asking if I wanted my help. Again disappointing lovely farm with nice produce but not friendly if you have a disability I will be back but mostly because it's the only farm within a reasonable distance that grows sour cherries. I will be going elsewhere for the rest of my summer canning needs read more

When my grandchildren were visiting in the area, one request they had was to visit Shaw Orchards to pick blueberries. That's exactly what we did and what a great experience!! The blueberry patch was very large and every bush was loaded with these most delicious healthy jewels. Seems we ate as many right off the vines as we picked, but of course that's not possible, but what a treat. We picked and picked. The kids had so much fun;better than an Easter egg hunt. We picked so many and it seemed we didn't make a dent in that plentiful patch. We had enough to just eat fresh for days, share with neighbors and friends, make delicious jam and plenty for freezing, which I love eating frozen right out of the bag. I have been to this orchard many times to pick apples, so many varieties, strawberries, and the most delicious cherries ever. Every season, they have the best fruit and berries I have ever had. This orchard is family owned and has been there for decades. It's not only a place to get the best fruit but a wonderful place to engage with the friendliest folks you'll ever encounter. When you go, don't forget to stop in for already picked fruits and berries at their store right there on the premises. That store is like a seasonal botique with an assortment of specialty food items and the nicest seasonal decor and gifts. Don't forget too, something I want to do with my grands is in the Fall, they have a huge pumpkin patch and offer scheduled hayrides. They carry a wide variety of pumpkins, both ornamental and for cooking. Definitely a must for picking or just going shopping in the store. read more

Had the loveliest time this past weekend. I've explored a lot of different farms in MD/PA/VA the last few years, and this is by far my favorite. We came specifically to pick raspberries, but we already can't wait to return in the fall. The staff was so down to earth and friendly, the orchards were lush (and yes, the raspberries are amazing), and I just liked the overall attitude - rules aren't posted everywhere and they do a thorough, non-chalant job of helping their visitors. I guess b/c they aren't overrun with visitors, they can exist this way. As a decent citizen, it is nice (and increasingly rare) to go somewhere where you are left alone b/c it is assumed you'll do the right thing. I frolicked up in the apple orchards and by the beautiful sunflowers after picking raspberries (oh the variety! oh the different tastes!) and could easily hop on the tractor trolley back to pay for my raspberries and shop the rest of the market.
