My husband and I were visiting Shawnee on Delaware, and I was looking for an activity for us to enjoy that didn't involve hiking! I looked at the Shawnee Playhouse's website, and found that two shows were being offered during the dates that we'd be in Shawnee -- a children's show (no kids with us) and a headline show (The Full Monty). We decided to get tickets for the latter though we were a bit concerned about the "adult content" warnings. We purchased our tickets and selected our balcony seats on-line (for a headline show, $29/each - regular, or $26 for a senior, plus a few dollars for ticketing fees). On the day of the show, we arrived about 30 minutes before the show. The (free) parking lot was already filling up but we found a good spot. We were warmly greeted at the door, and a valet offered to take us to our seats. Some concessions were available, at reasonable prices -- water, candy, etc. We had a wonderful experience at the playhouse. Obviously, this wasn't a professional Broadway performance but we would much prefer a community play as we saw at Shawnee! As a small theater, all audience members have "good seats" and, as noted by my husband, you can actually see the expressions on the actors' faces. It truly felt like a community get-together, with old friends greeting each other at the entrance, and comparing notes about the play on the way out. The quality of the acting/singing was very good, and the show was entertaining. I look forward to returning to the Shawnee Playhouse on our next trip to the Poconos. read more

Great seats anywhere. Very entertaining. No lines. The actors were good. I'd go back again

(This review only relates to the children's theater shows.) This past Summer I took the children up twice to see Aladdin Jr. and High School Musical Jr. just for something different and because the children's theater scene in our area is not that great. The ticket prices were reasonable enough at $10 each and the shows were uncrowded enough that we opted to purchase tickets in person both times although the Playhouse does have an easy to use website with on-line ticket ordering. The shows themselves were cheesy beyond belief although it was clear all of the actors, mostly older children, were enjoying themselves. Overall we had a good time and look forward to coming back at a future date. The one thing worth noting is that if you try to find the theater via an old school GSP device like a Tom-Tom, be careful as it will not send you to the Playhouse but to some backwoods residential area about five miles away on the other side of East Stroudsburg. read more

We went to see Pippin when the playhouse first opened up after 15 months shut down from COVID. The actors and actresses were very good, as was the singing and dancing. it was nice to be in a small venue where you felt close to what was happening on stage. Although it was not Broadway, it was a fun way to spend an evening at an affordable price, and our guests enjoyed the show as well. I have been especially impressed with the customer service at The Shawnee Playhouse. I had to make some changes to my tickets for one of their children's plays and the executive director and staff could not have been more helpful or gracious. read more

Took our children here and they really enjoyed the kids show. My five year old daughter especially enjoyed it. It seemed to be very magical to her to see live theater up close. The children's play seems to be like a well done high school play. There was a star actress probably in her twenties or late teens who did a great job and the cast seem to range mostly from middle school to high school age. The play we well attended but not sold out. I would note that there was some challenges with kids not being happy with their seats. The first row corner is a little bit obstructed and a mother had to spend about ten minutes before the play negotiating with her elementary school daughter about who would sit there with some amount of tear shed. We also had a bit of challenge on the second row as a couple of tall men sat in front of us and we had to shuffle around so my kids had a view other than the back of a bald head. We might try the front row of the balcony next time if we can get it. After the play the actors stood outside the front and signed autographs. My kids really enjoyed this and they created an atmosphere like they were meeting stars. The playbill had a page for autographs and they all pins and signed in character. My daughter said to me, 'dad the wicked witch is not really evil, she was just playing evil. She was friendly to me'. I will definitely take my kids back to the children's plays. It looks like there is maybe two a season so we will try to catch the second this summer. read more

I have been going to the shawnee playhouse for the past 5 years; once a year. have seen some really good plays there; and enjoyed the experience. However this year saw the play Country Fried Murder. Did not enjoy the vehicle or the acting; of course one could have impacted the other. I feel that this play being the prize winner makes me wonder what the other plays in the contest were like. Sorry to be so negative but others in my party felt the same way. As I said I was always a fan prior to this experience so it will not keep me from trying again. I recently took my girlfriend to the Shawnee Playhouse for a dinner and a show. Purchasing the tickets online and setting everything up was very easy and the staff was very prompt (in responding to questions) and polite. As one of the dinner options, we had ate at the Shawnee Inn and Resort River Room. This place was very nice and very clean. The staff was very helpful and polite. The food was great and had no complaints. The menu for this package was very limited though I might add, it came with a house salad with choice of dressing, main course, a soft drink of choice, and a chef's choice of dessert. After dinner we made our way to the Shawnee Playhouse about 30 minutes prior to the opening act. We walked in with our tickets printed in advance and was escorted to our balcony seats. We sat in the front row of the balcony right next to the "operations" room which had staff giving instructions to the stage actors and staff via radio communication device(s), which at first, I thought would've been a noise problem once the show began, but it wasn't. We saw the show, "California Suite", which takes place in a Hollywood Hotel. It was a 4 series act. One depicting a woman and an ex husband whom was fighting about custody of their daughter. The woman was moving back to New York and wanted to take their daughter with her. The husband put up great resistance (like a good father should). The show was funny. The next act was hilarious. It was about an older man who slept with a prostitute the night before, hung over and realizing that his mistress was still in bed. His wife was coming back from a trip and his cleaver ways to try and hide this drunken prostitute had the crowd laughing. The third act, which I have to be honest, was a bit dry, I actually fell asleep, but from what I can remember, it was about a couple from England. The last act was just as hilarious as the second. It was about 2 couples on vacation together when everything breaks loose after a tennis match. Too funny. After the show, we left. My girlfriend actually dropped her Driver's License and credit card but we didn't realize it. About 5 minutes after we left, I received a call from the Shawnee Playhouse and they told us what we lost. They were getting ready to close up for the night but one lady said that she would stay until we came back. We went back and was given back our lost property. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes to watch theater or live shows. The actors/actresses were great and the atmosphere was wonderful. We had a great time. read more

I have been to the Shawnee Playhouse for quite a few years now and every show I was able to see was a pleasure to watch. The actors, whether it was in a musical, a children's show or a feature show, are so committed to their art, their characters and the shows they are in. You can tell in their conviction to their character, that they work very hard to be on stage. It is a small theater, but because of its size, there isn't a bad seat in the house! The Box Office staff and the ushers are helpful and welcoming when it comes to finding the right seat. Being at the Shawnee Playhouse is always an entertaining experience, and I will definitely come back to more shows in the future. read more
