I booked an online haircut for "short" (there is no description for what short, medium, or long means, I had slightly below shoulder length hair and wanted it cut to be above two inches). When I got to the shop I was immediately asked who I booked with and what it was for. They did not ask my name to look me up. When I said Michael they asked me to take a seat. Two ladies and Michael then gathered around the front desk 3 feet away from my chair and offered to take the appointment for him. He asked the ladies why it was booked for him and they said it was online. He sighed rolled his eyes and said "No I will do it". He told me it would be a medium cut as short was around the ear length. Once I got in the chair he was friendly. But he did not listen to me about what I wanted my cut to be and he kept correcting me on my terms for hair-cutting tools and how I did not want it done. He did it the way he wanted and my hair did what I told him it would (I have thick, fine, straight-as-a-board hair) it fizzed out and looked like someone chopped at it instead of doing layers or thinning underneath where it is not visible. That is the only way to give me volume and take the weight off without giving weird frizz lines in my hair. Then they charged me for a long haircut without saying why I was charged for long and not medium. It took 27 mins to do my hair and I have never been so ready to be out of a salon. Do not go here if you are looking for a cut. Do not book with Michael if you want the price you were originally told and do not come if you don't want them to comment on your coloring and try to upsell you to fix it. read more

Haven't been recently, but the times I have been couldn't find someone better than Michael. I'm very picky when I let people touch/cut my hair. My mom Isabel, found this Salon for us both awhile back when they were by TJC. Michael did exactly as I wanted each time for a cut, even helped fixed a bad color someone else did to my hair. Its been a couple years since I've gotten it cut but next time I'm in Tyler I know where to go. Just got my 6th compliment from a stranger on my hair within 3 days of doing it at Shear Decadence. This isn't just because Kristen is a great colorist and Heather, Liz, and Rebecca were awesome support and advisors, it's because everyone was willing to co-create an idea I had. First of all, can we take a moment to truly appreciate the genius name of "Shear" Decadence? Genius. Secondly, let me give you context to this review. I've had my hair bleached and colored for a very dark brown to silver, blue, and blonde more than 10 times in the past 4 years in Los Angeles and Dubai. I love expressing myself with my hair color, usually outlandish, and my hair's health is the utmost priority. If you told me I'd find Kristen, Heather, and Liz's knowledge of coloring and bleaching a drive away from my mom's home town of Kilgore, TX, I'd think you didn't know what you were talking about. OK, context given, let's jump into the experience. I LOVE AUTOMATION. The salon is fully set up to take appointments online. There was a small hiccup in that I didn't find "coloring" in the online options, but it was sorted in a 5 minute call that was answered right away. Whoever answered was super sweet (maybe that's just me being new to Texas) and very clear in what was in store. I chose Kristen from the list after I checked her bio on the main website. The salon space itself is welcoming and super clean and super chic without being annoying. I was seen immediately by reception, and Kristen was ready. We spent about 10 minutes talking about what I intended and Kristen walked me through what might be different for me compared to the pictures I showed. I love how often Kristen checked in to how I was feeling as I do avoid asking for things because I'm just funny that way. She was very clear about what services she was starting that would cost more and she was ready for me to say no if I wanted. I never felt pressured and I felt very clear on what was going on. Once the bleaching was done, my hair color, as you can see from the photo, was complicated. There was such a nice vibe of teamwork as different people chimed in and it was really nice to see how open Kristen was to input, especially mine. When the agreed time was going to be extended just because that's life, I was told immediately when Kristen knew. Paying was super easy because my card was on file (automation!), and I could also tip everyone digitally. Super super cool experience in the tiny awesome town of Tyler. I've gone here for a couple of years, and my experience has been mixed but overall positive until yesterday. Heather in particular always did a great job, and if I'd been smart, I would have gone to her exclusively. Yesterday, I went in and asked for subtle balayage. The color on the lower layers of my hair isn't that bad aside from being more intense than I wanted, but I have these chunky, yellowish highlights framing my face that are awful (think early 2000's Kelly Clarkson but yellowish, I tried to attach a photo). It looks this way after toner, before it was even worse. I didn't realize this until I got home, but my hair is super dry. Even the $3 box dyes from Walmart that I used in high school never made my hair feel this bad. A part of this is on me because I should have spoken up at the salon, but it was still so bad even after the stylist tried to fix the yellow that I just wanted to leave. Very strict cancellation policy and poor customer service. I called on a Monday morning to cancel a Tuesday evening hair appointment due to a change in my work schedule, and I got charged the full price of the appointment ($40!), because I did not cancel 48 hours before on the dot. 48 hours before would have been Sunday afternoon... to which they replied a voicemail left on Sunday is fine, but calling Monday morning to attempt to speak to a person during business hours is not acceptable to waive the fee. Keep the fee, you've lost a customer. read more

My issue isn't with the stylist. I like how she does my hair I always have that's why I follow her from place to place as she has moved. It's the fees you all charge for a ten minute haircut that I take issue with. No haircut for the style that I wear should cost $50. You don't charge extra for a wash as you say you add it for free. I don't need a wash when I come in to get my haircut. Most salons I've gone to in the past charge extra for the shampoo and style which reduces the price of the haircut if you don't want to get a shampoo. I'm sure there are a lot of people who will pay $50 for a haircut that takes 10 minutes. I'm just not one of those. I totally wish you the best. More power to you if you can get enough people to pay those prices for those services. read more

I really enjoyed my experience here, it was my first time getting my hair completely redone in the past four years and I was pretty nervous, but upon arrival I felt welcomed and the staff were so friendly! Plus I've never really felt comfortable or really confident when getting my hair cut due to how short I want it etc. but when I mentioned I wanted the 10 in. completely chopped off everyone one was very encouraging and really worked with me. I had my hair done by LaEsha and she was so sweet and made my experience here. Michael also stepped in at the end and made sure I was happy with the final cut! I chose this salon cause it had the best reviews. I'm regretting it now. I went in yesterday with a picture of exactly what I wanted. Hair dresser told me she was the best in that store and I believed her. She kept saying how she could see the beautiful color in my hair when she was close to being done, but even after showing me I could barely see it in the right light. Mind you I only get my hair done once every 2 years, I paid $200 out of pocket to get this done(that's alot for me as a SAHM), and tried to charge me more for it. I asked for thin pieces and a partial highlight. I am basically all over blonde except my ends and my blonde is yellow and orange which I expressed I did not want. I drove 2 hours and paid almost $200 (more than I ever have even in California) and am not happy at all. They are very friendly and nice however I paid a very inflated price for a service I do not feel as though I got. The shampoo assistant had to point out some areas around my face/hairline to which Michael just brushed some product on and didn't leave on very long to correct a problem I can only guess which those areas are now orange. The lighting in there makes it difficult to see the true color but I did ask if there was some yellow and orange and was told it would lighten over time...that was a red flag I should have insisted it be corrected then and there. I am awaiting his resolution and will repost once he has responded to my email and pictures of my hair this morning. (it was colored yesterday) read more

I was a walk in, I just wanted a simple haircut and nothing else. Showed the lady a photo and told her what I wanted and she proceeded to chop off all of my hair not even asking me length wise or anything. I was so upset after I left realizing how much she had cut off and I got nothing like what I wanted, my hair has never been this short in my life. Probably not getting it cut again either like ever. And it cost me about 48$ for a haircut I could have probably just done better myself since I was in cosmo school for about three years but it's been awhile since I've cut hair so I didn't trust myself. I came into the salon with a botched Balayage from another salon. It was bad...there was no color blend to the crown of my head, just a straight brassy line, and my ends were fried. I was afraid to do anything to it for fear that my hair would finish breaking and fall out. Allison assured me that there were some friendlier processing techniques she could use to fix it without damaging it further. She convinced me to trust her and I'm glad I did! I was so impressed by her helpful demeanor (and was desperate for a haircut) that I decided to make an appointment- and I'm so glad I did! I met my lovely stylist, Bryn who gave me the perfect cut along with an AMAZING oil massage (my fav). I was also able to have my eyebrows shaped by Rebecca. She is such a pro at brow shaping! Oh. My. GOSH!! I just moved here about a week ago from my native Los Angeles, and I cannot believe I found this place! Thank you Yelp and Google reviews, or I wouldn't have found it. I have never been treated to such a delightful, luxurious salon experience in my life! Not only did I walk out with a rockin new do, I felt refreshed in my spirit and mind as well. Something about you Texans, you guys are special people and I love you so mucho. I was greeted by the lovely Ashley, one of the most awesome chicks I've met to date. Then, beautiful Rebecca came and took me back to wash my hair, where she literally transported me to paradise with a scalp and neck massage. I've never had anyone do that to me in a salon ever, not even in the ones where I paid over a hundred dollars for a wash, cut, and style. She made a headache I'd had for two days of road tripping straight up disappear! Real talk. Then, when I thought it couldn't get any better, my amazing stylist, also named Rebecca, and her lovely assistant Whitney, came and took me to their chair. Rebecca really took her time to assess my hair, ask me what I would like to achieve, and even took the time to look up inspo pics, my FAVE!! Then she gave me ANOTHER massage on my neck and shoulders, using amazing high quality essential oils made to relieve stress and help you relax. And something about her just made me pour out all my pent up stress, hairdressers are seriously therapists lol. My hair came out uh-may-zing! Then, when I seriously thought it couldn't possibly get ANY better, Michael, the super rad owner, has his own line of haircare products, Risher, he has formulated just for him and his salon (mic drop). Rebecca hooked me up with the perfect products for me. Guuuuurl, let me tell you, the products I bought were freaking life changing. The bourbon shampoo and tobacco conditioner smell like pure heaven. They will be a staple for me from now on. Their product called Peace Out is the most bomb pomade ever, and it has my favorite matte finish. My man has been loving the East Texas Dreams beard oil, and believe me a man with a beard as fabulous as Michael's knows what he's doing. My pure blooded Jordanian honey has the most beautiful, thick, healthy beard now. Last but not least, if you have hella fine thin hair like me, you have to get his I Fall 2 Pieces. This was one of the worst hair color/cuts that I've ever had. I asked for an ombré' color and showed the girl a picture... But I left with nothing even close to what I had asked for. She did an amazing job but I pre-booked a Brazilian blowout, which it cost 318 if you don't pre book, But I had to move it to the following week but they still charge me 318. I just moved to the Austin area and needed to have my extensions replaced, color, highlights,and trim. Showed her a picture of the extensions Heather did , asked her to leave my length and was told no problem. Big problems ... color wasn't even close even after a rinse; head is still sore 2 days later from removing old extensions; scabs on my scalp from where she pulled hair out and multiple tufts of 4" long hair where she burned my hair. This doesn't include loosing 4-5 inches in length. AND it cost double . Heather you need to move to central Texas!!!! read more

During my monthly appointments with Micheal, he listens to my ideas and using his professional judgement and skills makes my hair work look the best. .His mastery of color keeps my red hair just the right color...almost like it was when I was much younger. Michael, the owner really delivered on my hair. He cut and colored it exactly how I showed him in the pictures I brought. The first time I came in, I had another stylist and although it was a beautiful color, it didn't turn out like what I had in mind so he followed up with me and fixed both the cut and color. He gave me a free split end treatment since it had been colored so much and shampoo and conditioner to make the treatment in my hair last. He also did a beautiful job styling it and I left feeling beautiful with it looking exactly like what I had in mind! If you ever have a problem, you can go to him. I thought long & hard before leaving this review. In the end, I believe this could be beneficial for both potential new clients looking for a salon they can consistently utilize. Especially those with chronic pain issues, as well as for the owner Michael. After going here for several months I was forced to cancel an appointment for the very 1st time. Unfortunately, when you deal with chronic pain, you can't always follow a business's cancellation policies. When I called to do so, I was reprimanded by Michael like a child. He told me he empathized having back pain himself. First, I would suggest you never compare your "back aches" which allow you the luxury of working full time, to someone whose had multiple surgeries, gone through every available procedure, resulting in them no longer being able to work. In addition to being in pain on a daily basis. Next, Michael tried to make me feel guilty by telling me "he has a family to feed." I can't imagine him allowing his employees to use these same tactics on all of their clients. Somehow I think they would lose a lot of business upon doing so. Lastly, I was told to call the day of needing an appointment, rather than in advance. This after being told he books his appointments 3 hours in advance because he's so busy. So obviously this was meant to mean he would not personally deal with me as a client in the future. In the time period of several months I had been going here, I'd never missed an appointment, nor was I ever late. And as someone whose been married to a business owner, I completely understand the need to feed one's family. Especially from the employees point of view, more so than the owner who obviously makes a must larger percent of the profits. That's why despite not always receiving what I requested, I ALWAYS gave the highest recommended tip to the hairdresser. So for those potential clients who may deal with chronic pain, who are looking for a salon to use on a regular basis, I would think carefully before coming here. And to Michael the owner of this salon, in the future, I would think carefully about how you handle cancellations. Yes, you are a very good hairdresser. However, reprimanding a client whose not only an excellent tipper, but one whose never been late, let alone missed any prior appointments, is not good for business. In fact, in this specific case it was such a turn off that I have decided to take my business elsewhere. In the end, finding a great hairdresser is much easier than keeping good, reliable clients. Just some food for thought. BTW, before this incident I would have given your business at least 3 star's. I couldn't honestly give higher because not only were my requests inconsistent, but so was the pricing everytime I went there.
