When I called Hairborn, Jillian answered and was super friendly and personable. She got me an appointment with Melissa precisely at the time I needed (since I still had to coordinate picking up my kids on time). It's like the stars aligned! I told Melissa that I needed my fine hair cleaned up, but didn't want to lose a lot of length. I also explained that I needed to keep things low maintenance. She asked about layers, and I told her I would defer to her expertise. And that I did, as she recommended blow drying my fine hair prior to cutting to get a better idea of how everything was going to lay. After washing, she blow-dried, and then also flat ironed my hair, which was honestly a first in my experience. Then, Melissa further worked her magic on cutting and cleaning up my tired, tangled hair. She took her time. It came out better than I was hoping. I'm used to a long blunt bob, but this is a sleek straight 'do. My hair feels fresh, but I still feel like myself. Nothing drastic; rather, elevated. It's always a roll of the dice to try a new stylist, but Melissa is obviously a good listener, is skilled, and is intuitive. There were no product up-sells and no separate shampoo girls. BTW, the vibe of Hairborn is rock/alternative/edgy with extravagant and classy decor pieces. Cool space that seems to celebrate individuality. I was a fan, except for the endless sea of masks on staff and most clients (kind of beta for a spot that screams "unique and edgy"). Luckily they welcome fresh-faced clients, so that was a non-issue. I may have just found my new salon. I'd be interested to try other services..maybe brows when I'm ready to give up the natural look.

I was told Maria is the "expert" wig stylist and that she has "hundreds" of wigs to try on. I arrived early to their salon and was greeted by the so-called wig stylist who only had a few wigs to try on. She told me she had hundreds at home but there were absolutely no choices in the salon. She then tells me she was told of my appointment today and she was not prepared in the least. She was willing for me to order a wig sight unseen and would order just a couple for me to try on. But of the so called hundreds that she has at home, she was unwilling to bring any samples for a future appointment. She wanted me to order instead. Also, when she had me try on the wig, this so-called wig expert, put the few wigs she had available onto my eyebrows. She could not even center the wigs correctly. Nor could she adjust the fit. I being a novice knew more than she did as the so called professional. And, the wigs looked like rags, there was no style to them at all. DO NOT GO HERE FOR WIGS. SHE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT SHE IS DOING AND THERE IS NO SELECTION WHATSOEVER.

It's inspiring to see the level of care, precision, and learning that goes into each service. I've been seeing Sabrina, a talented student stylist who will be hopefully on her own by the holidays. She's calm, attentive, and thorough and truly takes the time to understand what you're looking for. The prices are very resonance, and the location in downtown wheaton is perfect! The one thing I always struggle with here is scheduling, you do have to book pretty far in advance and often I have a really hard time getting a time in the evenings or on weekends. Most available times seem to be during regular working hours which is hard for those with a 9-5. But would definitely recommend Fringe for a great hair appointment and relaxing spa experience. BONUS! I told her I wanted to change my hair color from boring brown and add in hints of strawberry-blonde highlights while touching up my grey roots. She always listens and explains how and what she will actually do, before she proceeds, which educates me along the way.
