It just so happened that we were getting out a little bit early from work for the holiday. Desperately far overdue for a haircut (= considering the discount spot), I called around to see if I could snag an appointment somewhere. When I called Hairborn, Jillian answered and was super friendly and personable. She got me an appointment with Melissa precisely at the time I needed (since I still had to coordinate picking up my kids on time). It's like the stars aligned! I told Melissa that I needed my fine hair cleaned up, but didn't want to lose a lot of length. I also explained that I needed to keep things low maintenance. She asked about layers, and I told her I would defer to her expertise. And that I did, as she recommended blow drying my fine hair prior to cutting to get a better idea of how everything was going to lay. After washing, she blow-dried, and then also flat ironed my hair, which was honestly a first in my experience. Then, Melissa further worked her magic on cutting and cleaning up my tired, tangled hair. She took her time. It came out better than I was hoping. I'm used to a long blunt bob, but this is a sleek straight 'do. My hair feels fresh, but I still feel like myself. Nothing drastic; rather, elevated. It's always a roll of the dice to try a new stylist, but Melissa is obviously a good listener, is skilled, and is intuitive. There were no product up-sells and no separate shampoo girls. BTW, the vibe of Hairborn is rock/alternative/edgy with extravagant and classy decor pieces. Cool space that seems to celebrate individuality. I was a fan, except for the endless sea of masks on staff and most clients (kind of beta for a spot that screams "unique and edgy"). Luckily they welcome fresh-faced clients, so that was a non-issue. I may have just found my new salon. I'd be interested to try other services..maybe brows when I'm ready to give up the natural look. read more

I just returned from the worst experience by a so called wig stylist, Maria, at this place. I called over a week ago to make an appointment to obtain a wig and asked several questions prior to making the appointment. I was told Maria is the "expert" wig stylist and that she has "hundreds" of wigs to try on. I arrived early to their salon and was greeted by the so-called wig stylist who only had a few wigs to try on. She told me she had hundreds at home but there were absolutely no choices in the salon. She then tells me she was told of my appointment today and she was not prepared in the least. She was willing for me to order a wig sight unseen and would order just a couple for me to try on. But of the so called hundreds that she has at home, she was unwilling to bring any samples for a future appointment. She wanted me to order instead. Also, when she had me try on the wig, this so-called wig expert, put the few wigs she had available onto my eyebrows. She could not even center the wigs correctly. Nor could she adjust the fit. I being a novice knew more than she did as the so called professional. And, the wigs looked like rags, there was no style to them at all. DO NOT GO HERE FOR WIGS. SHE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT SHE IS DOING AND THERE IS NO SELECTION WHATSOEVER. read more

So Nina is awesome, but before I get to her, let's just talk about all the staff. They make you feel welcome, they share their opinions and most importantly they have discussions with you. Like why go to a salon where you are not apart of the process? It wasn't just Nina who had the consultation with me, it was anyone in ear shot. I went in thinking I wanted a new look. I thought I knew what would look good, but they are the artist. Nina explained the color process, the color family that complimented me and I did come out with a new look and I love it. Christina does a great job and really listens to what I want done. I have had my hair done by her every six weeks or so for the past two years. She has helped me ease into my "sparkly" hair (aka increasingly grey hair) by using toner and face framing highlights. My prior stylist left me with a super defined grow out after six weeks - with Christina she has blurred the grow out and I only do highlighting every few visits. I do Toner and a trim with each visit. Have to say this isn't a cheap endeavor but I feel looking great and it lasts. Even the day before my appointment - my hair is decent. So, for me, it is worth it. Salon has an upbeat vibe and is relaxing. I appreciate how the chairs are spaced out and the variety they offer (but no one is pushy). read more

I have been a client on and off for many years. Their staff is talented, friendly, and the atmosphere is fun. The one star rating is for an unfortunate experience and lack of accountability for not disclosing a very expensive "finishing fee" to blow dry my hair so I wasn't walking out in the frigid cold our winters bring on. I was not familiar with their finishing fee because my normal routine is a color and cut, which includes a blow dry. The blow dry was just that, no flat iron or curling took place, just a blow dry. The cost of a cut is $57.20 and the finishing service was $43.30. I should also mention that I was scheduled for a color and cut, but my hair dresser and I agreed I really didn't need it. This would have been a perfect opportunity to disclose a finishing fee, unfortunately that didn't happen. As a customer service professional, their response to my concern solidified their primary focus is profit, definitely not customer retention. Beware, ask questions! read more

I discovered Hairborn Salon researching professionals who specialize in wigs online and that's how I found Maria. I had purchased a human long hair wig that I never wore because I didn't like the cut or color. Maria cut the wig so perfectly and suggested that she dye the wig to be more flattering. Also, she advised me that she sells synthetic and human hair wigs if I was interested. I visited the salon today to pick up my dyed and styled wig and to try on wigs she thought would flatter. I had the most fun and not only loved the color and style of my original wig, but purchased 3 wigs that made me feel fantastic. I lost my hair because of chemotherapy treatments and it has been a long time since I felt pretty. I HIGHLY recommend Hairborn Salon. Maria is caring, sensitive and a consummate pro. I had Sterling as my hairstylist and although she was really nice and the haircut was very safe and slow to my liking, the whole experience felt like a pitch for their crappy Moroccan oil products. It was kind of annoying since I could see right through it from the beginning and when I got to the register to pay, the girls at the desk made it even more obvious. I have been going here for the past six months and I am so in love. I am so particular about my blonde and I have super long extensions so I was so happy to find Alex. She is so talented and matches my hair perfectly to my extensions. Being a blonde, Olaplex is a must and Alex uses it every time. We used to do tape in extensions and now we do beaded weft extensions. The prices are so fair!! The salon is so cute and comfortable and I look forward to my appointment every month. I absolutely LOVE this place. Have fallen in love over the years! It started with my son getting a haircut there when they were in Villa Park. I was excited to see that they moved to Lombard right next to Brauer House! We always like to go there for lunch, so it's super convenient for a haircut, too. Let me just start off by saying I am a very picky person when it comes to my hair. Maybe because I used to work in a salon myself or that I have really fine, curly and frizzy hair. So when it comes to my haircuts, I know what I exactly want. My girlfriend Andrea has been raving about this place for the last 3 years we've been working together. Although her hair always looks amazing, I guess I'm just too scared to try but I'm also not happy with any of my haircuts. Yes...I am THAT picky. I had two haircuts prior to coming here and it was just awlful. I hated it and thought no one can help me fix this. Andrea gave me that push and I owe her everything for introducing me to this place. She originally told me to ask for Christina but she wasn't working that day but I got her mom Maria and she was fantastic! She listened to what I wanted and gave me exactly what I was looking for. She also gave me tons of advice on managing my own hair. Even though I've worked in a salon myself, I know when a stylist genuinely care. Its hard to put my finger on how I feel about this place. On one hand, it is clear that there are good business practices in place. The front of the house is professional and efficient. Everyone says hello and smiles. And the reviews are certainly a result of happy customers. There is no question that Hairborn is a fine tuned machine. And I dig their rockin vibe. But on the other hand, I have to wonder if my stylist had an off day or we just didn't gel. I felt like her comments/answers were more matter of fact and her listening was rushed. My end result, while beautiful, was different (and shorter) than I had hoped. My layers were unusual and it was difficult to style at home. And I am no stranger to short hair or putting in the extra effort. Perhaps there was a miscommunication? Perhaps I'm not used to her techniques? I'm not sure. Hairborn certainly has a fierce following and knows their stuff but the truth is..my hopes were high and I drove a good 45 min to be underwhelmed. In the end, I just can't justify returning. I visited here for the first time after a recommendation of a friend. Being skeptical of new hair places, I first made an online inquiry on a Sunday. I was impressed with how quickly Jillian got back to me. She also didn't just offer up an appt she asked me solid questions about my hair which made me feel very comfortable with the appt process. She suggested I see Alex, who was great. Everyone at the salon was very friendly. Alex listened to what I do and don't do with my hair. Suggested a balyage which I am highly pleased with. The cut is great, as is the color. The owner herself was also friendly. This is definitely a family atmosphere with an edgy vibe and I will be returning. First time giving them a chance, but unfortunately I won't be going back. This may be a better place for those who want very edgy and asymmetrical cuts and colors. I wanted a simple layered bob at my shoulders, a cut that should be achievable by even the most green stylists. What I ended up with was far from professional. My hair is naturally a bit wavy, but that has never stopped a stylist from being able to give me an even cut. I'm not sure what went awry with this particular visit but it was not worth money. I could have chanced it at a cheaper salon for the results I received. Of course, when my hair is blowdried and flippy it's very forgiving. Once straightened, it's very clear how amateur the cut actually is. You'll see in the picture that the left side has very long layers and the right side has a hole where the very short layers are cut with a long layer is underneath. What is hard to see in the picture is the lack of attention paid to the cut line as well. I have pieces that are a good 1/4-1/2" longer than my bob length. I'm quite upset and disappointed that such a simple haircut is going to take months to correct properly. Update with regard to the reply: Dave, thank you for the offer of a complementary cut. However, if you feel this is an acceptable cut and that your stylist worked proper technique on the cut, I am not interested. Additionally, if your stylists cannot finish a proper cut without a final styling, you shouldn't be up-charging for the styling. I did a wash and cut, without the styling, because I was headed home to ride my bike. And to be clear, she blow dried my hair to check out the final look, it's not like I walked out with it wet. I'm sorry to have to give this negative review, but perhaps some additional training is needed. read more

I would love to give this place the full 5 stars because my hair looks great and my stylist was awesome but I had a bad experience while waiting for my appointment that I can't overlook. As I waited, I overheard a customer making the most disgusting RACIST remarks. I was shocked but I know that some people will never learn. However, I was even more shocked when her stylist Dave started joining in. At some point they must have noticed me sitting nearby because they started speaking only while music was blasting overheard and keeping quiet between songs. I still managed to pick up a few more snippets of their inappropriate conversation. In short, I would love to be able to go back to the salon because my hair looks great but after what I experienced I don't feel welcome. read more

I would like to start off with how I think Dave is incredibly talented. That being said, I had SCHEDULED an APPOINTMENT for 3pm to get my hair done one day. I had gotten there about 5-10 minutes early and was prepared to wait until my scheduled time. When I got there, Dave was just starting on a full head of highlights on a woman with long hair. I thought someone one else would take over and finish her when my appointment time started. Instead, he continued to work on her, and I sat there waiting for about a half hour before someone decided to wash my hair to get me ready for a haircut. I ended up sitting back in the waiting room with a soaking wet head of hair (mind you it was February and cold) for another 20 minutes before I finally got into his chair. I was completely unprofessional. I have chosen not to go back ever since, despite his talent, because it was a terrible experience. Very disreputable and poor managing skills. Mind you, I feel that since i myself do hair, I am more lenient towards salons because I can understand all the behind the scenes inner workings. Basically, I went on a whim to Hairborn because of the positively dorky sign. Any place can have scissors cutting the letters, or flowing hair incorporated into the logo. But who else hangs a sign of a dated guy sporting a Teddy-boy pompadour emblazoned on an Ace of Spades? I was able to walk in on a Thursday morning and get a haircut from Loni. I asked her for her advice on a new hairstyle, and maybe she sensed that I didn't want anything too drastic, but I'm very happy with the way my hair looks this morning. Owner Maria is friendly as well and loves to hear the best joke you know. My wife had complained about the lack of a middle ground when it comes to women's haircuts. Places either charge $12 or $50. Since Hairborn is in the middle - women's cut is $25, men's is $22 - I think she'll be happy to visit this strangely charming place. read more

I'm still coming here after many years , including when they changed their location. I also live in LA currently and this is STILL the only place I trust getting my haircut at. I tried places locally but I wasn't impressed, and since I'm in Chicago so often I figured why not just keep going to Hairborn? All the staff here are SO nice and down to earth; they make you feel valued being a client here. And let's be real, that's hard to find nowadays. I will continue being a loyal client. And as far as location goes, they're now next to a bar which is super cool if you get a cut later in the day and want to grab a quick drink to start your weekend! One of the very, very few establishments that I have walked out of with exactly what I wanted when I came in. Also, one of the very, very few establishments where I have let them take full creative control and walked out looking better than I would have with any idea I had in the first place. I started coming here because I got some bunk ass extensions at another salon. I needed them fixed and this was recommended to me. I saw Chrissy and she made my hair everything I hoped for and more. Long, thick, dyed perfectly to a reddish-purple tint (that I had not requested- she just thought it would look bad ass- and it did). This was my go-to place for about two years until financial crisis hit and I couldn't afford $800.00 extensions every year. I really should go back to feel better about myself, now that my hair is shorter and boring. Maria does my mom's hair but everyone in the shop is fantastic. Every single stylist is so talented and they have recently gone through some renovations and changes, making the shop, clients, and employees even better. Always good conversation and fun pictures and videos to look at and spark interest. And always, always a cool car in the lot. For the record, the best damn eyebrow wax and makeup application, too.
