The society maintains two landmarked properties: the Officer's Club at Fort Totten Park, where the society is based; and the Lawrence Cemetery, located in a wooded area at the corner of 216th Street and 42nd Avenue. The Officers' Club, also known as "The Castle," boasts a Gothic Revival style. Completed in 1887, the building served as a mess hall and club for the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The Lawrence Cemetery was granted to the Lawrence family by Dutch Governor Willem Keift of New Amsterdam in 1645. It is the final resting place of Cornelius Van Wyck Lawrence, mayor of New York City from 1834 to 1837. Inside scoop: Fort Totten Park was an active Army base from 1857 until 1995 and the home to four major Army hospitals since the Civil War. The Fire Department of New York presently controls about one third of the property and the NYC Parks Department controls another third. Went with a group of friends to visit the former home of Bill and Lois Wilson…read more It was as authentic and charming as I had hoped... Staff was great, tour groups were full. I went with a group of friends who were reconnecting after two years of life and circumstances, pulling us apart... We wanted to catch up as much as we wanted to learn the history... The only disappointing aspect was the tour guides, while, really really nice people and kind, take their tours very very seriously... Just keep that in mind if you're looking to reconnect with friends... Maybe camaraderie is better suited to before and/or after. All in all great day.

Wedding-- One of the…read morenicest venues I've ever visited, a destination wedding on the Metro North. Premium passed appetizers were decadent and delicious. Food spread at cocktail hour had a lot of variety that melded high-end cuisine with basic finger food. Dinner service prolonged but generally matched the quality of passed appetizers. For the salad course, everyone got a big ball of burrata. 53 minutes later, at almost 10pm, the entrees arrived. Portions of protein were tiny considering the length of the meal, but overall this Country Club hosted a great wedding with pretty good wedding food.

It might as well be called the bagpipes parade, for the plethora of elegantly kilted bagpipers,…read morewith the only real difference being the colors of the uniforms, and most everything representing and otherwise sponsored by unions, that some would say is a bit... stereotypical. Yet it is what it is, with nary a crybaby in sight about it! In fact, I found the parade emitting a very positive energy, an overall vigorous and wholesome impression. No fights, uncivilized behavior, vulgarity, eyesores, or de-evolutionary displays needing correction. Very organized, with primary content being Catholic, some Masonic, and Police groups, which may in part explain the conduct. Detecting "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling", there were some sparse marching bands with lovely cheerleaders heading them off, and it was also delightful to see stepdancers hopping to action! Followed by The Boyscouts and a Catholic club. The banners are quite elaborate, depicting 'saints', missionaries, catholic clergy, union founders, etc. The meeting with Americanatives was most memorable, imparting hospitality even to cross wielding zealots, and everyone knows how that ended. The parade began with an interview with a perhaps bepinted Cardinal admitting the connections with the seasonal equinox, while the church previously used this date to replace all Pagan significance to The Equinox except what could be exploited, and for conversion purposes. Upon their diminishing influence, they seem to be taking cues from Pagans now! The Dapper Gentlemen - A Dr. from Iona University, the Vice President of Tourism Ireland, another representative for Irish tourism, the chairman of the St. Patrick's day foundation, a representative for "Catholic health", the president of the Uniformed Firefighters Assn. The Lovely Lasses - Laura Merrit, the chief marketer Digeo of Guiness beer wearing an amusing sweater with logo - does she come with it? Mentioning a collaboration with Tipsy Scoop {spirited ice cream!}; the chairman of the parade, and the Grand Marshall who also happens to be the Heineken CEO!; and... the president of Forham University. No "St. Patrick" in a carriage at the conclusion like a Santa Claus cousin, or serpents or leprechauns for that matter, but it was like the entire Irish neighborhood populace of NY was walking in the parade! Almost like a marathon. And families of all persuasions enjoying the afternoon. Personally, I would like to see the addition of floats, folkloric characters like Leprechauns and wee folk {spot the dwarf!}, more arcane & Pagan costumes and instruments, and food displays. _____________ * Apparently, due to religious reasons, the parade is never held on a Sunday.

Dating back to the times of the Dutch colonialists it pays homage to a time in our country's history - specifically to our beautiful Empire State. I'm a lover of both history and nature and you get both when come to visit. The museum is the house of a man named Jacob B. And the farm is a little farm but still a farm. Would be cool if they had a coffee shop in site like good espresso and can be a place to come enjoy the outdoors or something. Anyways. I was scrolling through IG and came across a really nice event that they were hosting for St Nicholas day. I'm so glad we came from the city to check it out. My teen wasn't really impressed as nothing is impressive to his standards if it isn't tech related of course but my two littles enjoyed themselves so much. They made Christmas cards and enjoyed a special treat at the end of our event. They met and fed a horse and st nick himself! Our story teller who sat at the fire side was engaging and had just the right amount of time telling her story.

The Belskie Museum of Art and Science is a fantastic local (albeit small) museum located next to…read morethe Closter Public Library and across from the Tenakill Middle School. I was disappointed to have mixed the exhibit featured during the month of January on Korean minhwa (folk painting). So this time around, I made a note to attend the reception for April's exhibit on Mixed Media Masterpieces and had a great time browsing the museum to look at the pieces curated by Meagan J. Meehan. The pieces for this particular exhibit were available for purchase, so along with the work title and artist information, the pieces also had prices listed with the exhibit labels. I would have loved to purchase a few pieces, but they were expensive for someone on a grad student budget! Admission is free, although donations are welcomed, and receptions for the monthly exhibits typically occur on the first Sunday of the month. The museum is only open on weekends between 2 and 4 pm and closed during weekdays. There is an exhibit schedule available online, and no exhibits are on show during the summer months of July and August. The staff are welcoming; the woman who sat at the reception table greeted me when I entered and asked me to sign the guestbook. If you're in the area, the Belskie Museum is a good place to spend an hour on a weekend to enjoy local art.

I don't know how I literally just discovered Summer Streets despite living in the area for a few…read moreyears now. For the first few Saturdays in August, NYC will shut down Park Ave to all cars and pedestrians cyclists are free to roam on the streets from 72nd street all the way down to the Brooklyn Bridge. If you're a runner/ cyclist there are multiple aide stops along the way with water. Each of these aide stops will have some sort of a free recreational activity like zip lining, rock climbing, kids play zone, doggie play zone, or dance performances. I had the opportunity to run from central park all the way down and across the brooklyn bridge and it's a completely different perspective being able to run down Manhattan without stopping with a ton of other people running alongside you. I would 100% recommend checking out this event in August!

Had a lot of fun running Summer Streets with my run club on Saturday. Was nice that they extended…read moreit a mile into East Harlem at 109th Street. Terrific way to experience Park Avenue with no vehicular traffic 7am to 1pm all the way down to Brooklyn Bridge. It's great that there are water stations, entertainment, water sprinklers, and hydration sample area set up. Was an awesome training run for 14 miles and we ran across Brooklyn Bridge over to Manhattan Bridge then back on to Summer Streets. The only thing that would make this better would be to have porta potties set up along the course as there are no bathrooms along the way unless you find a Starbucks to jump into. Still, it's a fun way to spend a Saturday morning with a run, bicycle ride, or walk in fresh air.
