The Lafayette Theatre is a bonafide single screen movie palace from a time when Lon Chaney haunted the rafters and Clara Bow flashed a little "It Girl" ankle to scandalized movie audiences all over the civilized world. To a generation weaned on the squalor of the multiplex and the sonic overload of the High Definition Man Cave, the Lafayette is a living testament to the grandeur and wonderment of going to the movies when doing so was an event and television was still a science fiction glimmer. Thankfully, the Lafayette is a registered historical landmark that still shows contemporary films and the occasional silent picture with keyboard accompaniment. Beautiful old school theatre on Main Street Suffern. I've been to a few old school theaters but this one is in really good shape. I won't say it's been totally renovated - but there is no signs of decay. Huge theatre inside. With opera boxes and a balcony. So different from modern theaters with seating for 20. I found admission prices to be reasonable. $8 for a matinee. $10 for regular admission. I'm hoping to be able to catch one of their classic films for $4 soon. Step back in time to the 1920s when you walk into this historically ornate, single screen theatre with a live organ player. Originally constructed to show silent films and live performances, it now features one movie at a time, with a new movie starting on a Thursday. Movie times are limited to one time slot during the week and 2-3 time slots on the weekend. Sometimes the movie will run longer than a week, so be sure to check their website. On there you'll also find information as to what classic movie they might be showing in addition to the running movie, on Saturdays. In keeping with the times, you may also purchase tickets directly from their website. There is a snack stand as soon as you walk in, serving classic popcorn, soda and candy. Inside the theatre is plenty of seating, not the most comfortable, but fitting to the decor. A live organ is played until it's time for the movie to start. I came here on a Saturday night for a 7:30pm showing and found there to be plenty of seating left around my 7:10 arrival. But that could be subject to many elements. This is one of my favorite theaters! It's like stepping back in time. They show first run movies as well as Saturday classics (months have different themes) and silent films. I've been grateful to go see several films that I have never seen in a theater before (or came out well before I was born). The organ is played before the Saturday shows start and is really a treat. Please go and support this theater. We are so lucky to have these types of venues in our area! Some history: The Lafayette Theatre, named for the Revolutionary War hero the Marquis de Lafayette, was designed by architect Eugene DeRosa and it's construction completed in 1924. Originally, it was equipped with a custom-designed Muller organ to accompany silent films and live performances. The silent film "Scaramouche" directed by Rex Ingram was the first to grace it's screen. At that time tickets cost 25 cents. read more

The Lafayette theater has been continuously showing motion pictures since 1924. 91 years now. I've been coming here for over 20 years. The Theatre screens regular first run movies as well as classic movies Saturday mornings from October to December and April to June. This grand movie palace will really knock your socks off. The beautiful neon marque warmly greets you as you enter. The old-style box office,along with the big wooden poster cases, will impress you as you enter the lobby. Staff is dressed in the old-style outfits, that, were worn in the Golden age of movie going. The concession stand features popcorn popped fresh before each show.The prices for the concessions are very reasonable compared to the multiplexes.The popcorn is always very delicious. When you walk into the theater space, look up and see the big beautiful chandelier. As well as the four opera boxes on each side of the theater. Look back and you'll see the large balcony, which was, what is, now considered "stadium seating" Look up to the fourth opera box closest screen on the right side and you'll see a grand Wurlitzer pipe organ. It is played before the Friday and Saturday night evening shows. The entire theater was redone in 2010, including the ceiling and all the goldleaf and gliding. Pick out a good seat and look and notice there's a big heavy red curtain covering the screen. When the lights go down and the majestic curtain opens, the large silver screen is revealed. I feel like I've been transported back into simpler time every time I go to the theater. There's just something so special about seeing a movie in a real, actual theater, versus a soulless box like plain Jane multiplex. The projection is bright and crisp and the sound as well, without being overpoweringly loud like it is in the multiplexes. The staff is always very friendly, if you become a regular you'll feel like the characters on the TV show cheers, where, "everybody knows your name" This wonderful movie palace is a very special place. So even if you are not in the local area, It is absolutely worth it to make the trip to come here to see a first-run movie or a classic movie. Purchased ticket on line to see the Irishman. Arrived 45 minutes ahead of showtime and no parking at all anywhere in the area. Finally gave up at 6pm showtime. Theatre should really address this and advise patrons that parking may not be available Hope to gets a refund read more

Let's just say this is a gem. It was a dirty old gem you find in some old lady's dusty house. But the owner has taken that dusty old gem and cleaned it up. The ceiling is beautiful. The organ before the main showing is nostalgic. The concessions are simple and reasonably priced. There is always a groupon for a 2 ticket package with drinks and popcorn! They only show one movie at a time but it is worth it to go see the movie at a local - traditional theater. I'm so sick of the AMC and Lowes money making rip offs. An iconic theatre built 80+ years ago. Walking in, you can immediately feel what it would've been like to see silent movies and vaudeville acts. A true treasure of Suffern, NY. I've been coming to this theatre since I was a little girl and it has undergone some huge renovations. Obviously, with any single showing theatre, you're going to be in direct competition with AMC, regal, and IMAX theatres, but what is so amazing about this one is inevitably its charm. I love this place, seeing a movie here is like entering another time. The prices are extremely reasonable- I think at most I've paid is $7 for a ticket. And the staff is always friendly and helpful. Another positive is that they recently started taking credit cards at the concession stand so you can go cash free. I love the Lafayette Theater. it's a throwback theater that seats about 750pp, boasts of a huge old style screen AND a Mighty Wulitzer organ for many occasions. I rediscovered the Lafayette about 5 or 6 years ago just prior to Halloween and their Horror fest silent films. What a gas !! Once I purchased my ticket and made my way into the "house" there on stage was a person operating a Theramin (It's an electronic instrument that made those 50's SciFi sound tracks, think the original "Day the Earth Stood Still" and you've got it). The films were accompanied by the Wurlitzer and it made for a fantastic experience. That night I saw "Metropolis" & "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", wow. The Lafayette plays front line movies during the week and weekend evenings and on Saturday mornings the show older and really old films. They have theme months like family movies (how about Goonies, E.T., Jaws & Jurassic Park for a lineup?! ), 40's & 50's and so forth all for a $3.00 admission. It's getting more & more popular and why not ? it's a great experience for virtually nothing. Beautiful theatre. Apparently, it is restored. Loved the charm of this place. A gentleman played on the piano on the upstairs balcony prior to the show. Every Saturday, they play an oldie. There were two noticeable "dents" on the screen, which is the reason why I deducted 1 star. Now, I can't give you my honest take on the quality of sound because I'm profoundly deaf. This is a nice local vintage theater, love the charm of it but I do feel it could use a few up dates do to the changing times and to make it a easier choice to pick over other big name, over crowed theaters in the area. I feel it could really use new up dated seating that at LEAST has a drink holder, so your not always reaching to the floor for your theater priced drink during the movie or Especially when someone is walking by and could accidentally kick it over since it is dark during the movie ( has happen to me) then you have to buy a new soda. Next I'd have to say the restrooms could use a face lift , granted they do work but could be so much better with a little updating in my opinion. Last I would say the sound system, because it is a very large theater with a large screen far from you it feels/ sounds like the sound is far as well. In the tech days we're living in, there is ways to update without losing the charm of the vintage feel. Other then that the staff are very Pleasant and the Organ player is quite charming before the movie starts, prices are very reasonable and I would recommend to anyone looking for the vintage style look and feel read more

Saw Rouge One here tonight. Theater is beautiful, the screen is large and there are so many seats. Being able to sit in the balcony section is so unique. Tickets and popcorn are cheaper than AMC and it feels nice to support a local business. Seats and sound quality could be slightly improved. read more

This is a great theater! It is a little run down, but I think it adds to its charm! The popcorn is yummy.

Not too many one screen movies around. You can't get more nostalgic than going into this 1920's theater. As other person said, the balcony is huge, and yes, you can imagine Lincoln sitting in this theater. They have shown oldies on Saturday mornings and have an organist play a beautiful organ before these shows. You almost feel that you're at Radio City Music Hall. The Township of Ramapo has partnered with the theater to help it survive during these hard days. I hear they may go 3D. When in the area, if you want a little taste of bygone days, you must take in a movie there. read more

For 10 years I have lived 2 miles from this theater and had never been in until last night (thanks to a Groupon). The theater is a real gem. A little rough around the edges. Some of the seats are in poor shape. The sound system is okay, but a little out-of-balance compared to modern standards. Definitely worth a visit. It was a slow night when I went so the balcony and boxes were closed. It would have been fun to sit in the boxes. Bring your kids. Doesn't seem like they rotate the movies enough. read more

You know I pay good money for a movie theater experience going, movies are really expensive these days it's annoying. Kids were screaming behind me during Jurassic World. People in the theatre screamed shut up to them, and we tried to "shush" them, if I didn't pay 30 dollars so I can take my family to the movies I wouldn't be angry. I got up during the last 1/4 of the movie asked the staff to shut them up. One walk through through the theater could of solved this.
