I came to the school as a guest speaker, I am an author, and I was very impressed with the people I met. Everyone was genuinely nice and caring. The school is clean, with a hint of fun flair on the walls. And the art exhibit I was shown was amazing. The principal came out of her meeting to personally welcome me, and the kids I spoke to about writing were so curious and delightful. This was a wonderful experience for me, and I hope I have the chance to come back for another author visit. read more

I am reviewing this wonderful school as an 'outsider'. I had been attending Teacher Professional Development on Montessori Applied to Children At Risk. All of the instructors are very knowable of the MACAR method and detailed (which I like). This training is wonderful, it makes me wish that I could of had the training sooner to help the children in my classroom who are at risk. The Shelton school helps children who have learning-differenterences. Including dyslexia, attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), speech and language disorders. While I observed in the classrooms, I saw incredible teachers and students. The classroom sizes are small and the teacher to student ratio is 8 to 1 (at the most). The children are very respectful to their peers, teachers, work, and the environment. I will definitely want to come back for more training. read more

As a former student of Shelton I believe that this school has not been doing what the schools initial intentions were. Shelton used to be know as a school for the Bright and talented. reflecting on the five years that I attended Shelton my family and I have noticed that they have been taking in more kids with behavior problems. Which caused them to lose sight of what they were trying achieve.Shelton ill prepares you for life ahead. Sheltons Upper elementary isn't as bad as the middle school was. In the 4th grade I was told by my teacher that I needed to forget all of my math basic facts (that had down perfectly) to re-learn them the Montessori way. Ever since then I have never been as good at math. 5th grade my math teacher couldn't understand why I didn't know how to do math. She did everything she could and eventually I was back at grade level. 6th grade was a covid year so that was rough in itself, but it was by far the best year I have had while I attended Shelton. it went down hill from here. 7th grade was unbearable my science/advisory teacher who we found out worked at one of my pervious schools. I became an immediate target because I had attended this school. She would call out my grades along with my classmates grades to the the whole class. which is inappropriate behavior. she would also call me names such as: stupid, annoying, distracting and dumb. She would tell me she couldn't read my handwriting and make me redo assignments. Although i have been told by other teacher and parents that i have good hard writing. As a teacher who works at a school with children of learning disabilities this was not appropriate for her to be saying. this continued trough out first and second semester. she was not helpful when I had a concussion she would just get mad when I would ask for help. I would often skip morning advisory because I didn't want to be in the same room as her for more time then I needed to be. I spent countless hours in the counselors office crying because of her. The administration wouldn't do anything. My Mom would call almost everyday to try and talk with the head of middle school, she stoped returning my mom calls. At the start of 2nd semester They had told me to LIE to my teacher and tell her "I had tutoring" with another teacher so that at the end of the school day could be somewhat removed from her presence for afternoon advisory. since this was a covid year and we had cohorts, they refused to move me out of her class. In March well into second semester they realized how bad this situation was they agreed to move me into a different science class. I was still in her advisory. this just caused her to be even more harsh and the name calling and verbal abuse didn't stop. This caused me to cry myself to sleep almost every night. I couldn't take it anymore. Shelton didn't fire the teacher, they did a few month after the start of the next school year because she started to abuse another student. My mom had informed the school I would not be attending next year for 8th grade. They head of middle school begged my mom to give them another chance that 8th grade would be much better, she said that would have the best teachers. My parents and I decided to give Shelton another shot. The start of 8th grade was great I had great teachers I loved my advisor, my friends were glad I stayed as-well. November 5, 2021, I walk into my first period math class and I had made a 76 on a homework sheet (not a bad grade),my teacher told me " I know that you are considering going to highland park next year But if you can do these simple fraction correctly I don't think you should consider going at all, you need the Shelton way." she continued to tell me I would get no where in life. There was one other kid in the room, I was embarrassed. She could have easily called me out into the hall to discuss this matter. I was in tears by the end of our conversation and excused myself to the restroom. after school I told my mom what happened and she was upset and she emailed administration, and within an hour she was on the phone discussing what had happened and how they promised this wouldn't happen again. That Monday my teacher apologized. My parents and I decided after this semester I would no longer be attending Shelton. I would like to say this experience was traumatic and no child should ever half to go through something like this. I moved to Highland Park Middle school where their academic and accommodations have helped me so much more then Shelton ever would have. Not to mention I made a 100 on 8th grade math exam where the teacher told me I would never be able to do math at a public school. read more

Upper Elementary and Middle School were incapable of helping student with moderate to severe dyslexia despite assurances from staff. Student's scores on standardized tests continued to decline while staff gave "A" grades. Finally pulled student from Shelton and moved to a different LD school. A year later, the progress at the new school was obvious. read more

Just be sure your child has the right kind of learning disability before considering this school. Apparently my son is too dyslexic and his learning differences are too different. Awed at the fact that my husband and I were scheduled to come in for the admissions director to tell us this. read more

Where do I even begin. Shelton is something very special. I attended Shelton School at Lovers Lane, continued going to Shelton for a total of 14 wonderful years through graduation. Shelton taught me many skills that have helped shape me to be the kind of man I am today. They strive to teach ethics and enforce ethical behavior as a series of classes as well as problem solving and social skills. They push values and what it takes to be a leader as well as the proper skills needed to live a more productive life. At Shelton you get one on one help when you need it and everyone is like one ginormous family. I do not know where I would be if it wasn't for the guidance and direction of those at shelton. While attending Shelton, I was involved in a lot, recycling, band, student council, talent shows, I ran the breakfast bar running trips up to Sams and Kroger for Mrs. Roger, was very involved in theater and later worked on the light board and adjusting all the lights above the gymnasium. I played football, basketball, tennis, baseball, soccer, ran track. I went on two school trips with Shelton, one to China. Shelton taught me how to read and spell above college level. My standardized testing scores weren't great but I managed A's and B's in every subject, worked hard studying and passed tests and knew the material. Shelton taught me how to write a paper, sentence structure, grammar/word usage. Most importantly it taught me to be determined and not give up. It taught me that I am different than the norm. It taught me that although I am different the only difference is that I think in a much different way than the majority. I went on to get my Eagle Scout in BSA, which I transferred troops and lost records and had to redo a lot of core before age 18. I now work at Howdy Homemade on Lovers Lane, have been given a lot of responsibility, set up meetings, answer phone calls, take orders over the phone, organize catering events, come up with new flavor ideas, store layout, I run the store when Tom is not there, run the cash register, and am a huge role in marketing and promotion for the company. My husband and I are relocating to Dallas and need to find a school for dyslexia. We are coming to Dallas during our daughter's spring break and we need to visit more than one school. The Assistant Admissions Director told us that we had to dedicate 4 days at Shelton or they would not consider our daughter's application. Even after that time commitment there is no guarantee our daughter would be accepted. When I explained again that we needed to see a few schools during our time there and that we were traveling from several states away and we were taking time off work to not only find the best fit and best school for our daughter (which means we see more than one) but to also find a home, we were advised by the Director of Admissions that we could simply fly back to see other schools another time. She clearly had no regard for us as human beings...we were just a number to her and she made that very clear. We have all the required testing and our daughter has been attending a similar school in Louisville with excellent recommendations. To say we are disappointed in how we were treated is an understatement. Clearly if this how a school will treat you when you are a prospect imagine how you will be treated once you are a client. Shelton is wonderful! It has helped my son so much with his confidence and helped him know he can do his work on his own. The teachers are amazing and helpful. They don't beat the kids up like so many public schools do. My only regret is that we didn't get to Shelton sooner!!!! read more

Shelton School has changed my son's, and our family's, lives. We were all at our breaking point with other schools not only not knowing (truly knowing) about learning differences, but, sadly, not caring. We have seen this young man turn from an introverted child who was sobbing every night because he simply could not do the work in the manner or time the other schools demanded, to an outgoing, confident, happy, involved A/B honor roll student. If you can make the move for your child, do it! They offer financial assistance through their endowments, so that helps some with the tuition. And I just have to comment on the previous post about the school not really being secular and "teaching creationism as science." That made me, quite literally, laugh out loud. That is absurd and could not be further from the truth. This is an extremely diverse school (in every sense of the word), and that post was clearly made by someone meaning to do harm: either a disgruntled student, parent, something. It's simply not true.
