WARNING FOR SOLO WOMEN TRAVELERS: TDLR - The bartender is super pushy to get you to drink more or buy HIM drinks even when told clearly-- NO. After he thinks you are toasty enough, he will go around from behind the bar, hug you from behind, and play it off as if you wanted to dance with him ALL without your consent. Very creepy and slimy swindler behavior. COMEDY: The show was super fun! The comedians were all great and handled the crowd's up&down energy well. I definitely would come here more often if it wasn't for the harassment from the bartender. If you go here with a group a people, this place is great. If you come here for a date night, it's a great night. If you come here by chance as a party of one, PLEASE WATCH OUT. The specific bartender I'm talking about definitely hustles people into drinking. To each their own but I think bartenders are supposed to respect the sanctity of a NO and also help curate a safe space rather than prowl & pounce/predatory. I saw Secret Improv Vice there. It was so much fun. I went alone and the atmosphere was light, freindly and comfortable. It is an old theater and perfect for a Sunday evening Noir mystery. First time at the Shelton Theater and was low key impressed. Came here for a Cheaper than Therapy standup comedy show and had a great time. I've been to Cobbs and the Punchline many times so I was surprised that I had not heard of this place. We got tickets for the wrong day and the show was sold out the night we came. I managed to charm the ticket lady and the manager to let us in. Good customer service right there. The inside has different levels with cool historic vibes. There were also two bars. The lineup of the night was pretty great. I enjoyed all the comedians especially this Asian guy from Hawaii. Highly recommend coming here for a show! read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this theater, which hosts Secret Improv Society (comedic improvisation) and Cheaper Than Therapy (stand up comedy) regularly, as well as a few other events it looks like. I was initially confused about where to go for  our particular show (Secret Improv Society) as we were given very little instructions when we entered. There are small signs, but also multiple levels and multiple doors in this venue, and the signs are easy to miss. They had two bars serving drinks on a Saturday night, a nice selection of delicious specialty cocktails on the menu (I especially liked When Life Gives You Lemons, with the starburst- infused vodka). The lower level, where the auditoriums are, has an awesome lounge space as the waiting area, with a lot of character, quirky decor and seating, cool art, and even a piano. And of course the bar in the middle, with friendly bar staff (even if they're not the fastest). Doors to the auditoriums open around the same time, near showtime, and it's open seating. Facing the bar, the door to the right (Main Stage) is the entrance to Cheaper Than Therapy, the door to the left (Cabaret Stage) is the entrance to Secret Improv Society. I only attended the latter, but it was an amazing show, with great audience participation. There was even a kid (possibly a tween) who went on stage for one of the bits, so I guess they don't have an age limit here. The performers for the show were very entertaining, and the staff at this venue were overall helpful if you have any questions. The auditoriums are small and simple, not meant to hold large crowds, but just perfect for a fun intimate event. read more

Dirty, run down, neglected interiors with absolutely disgusting bathrooms (with no trash cans, only giant recycling cans...so unsanitary for ladies), rude box office staff, and bartenders who don't ID *anyone*. Scary upstairs with unmarked bathrooms that they ask you not to lock behind you (how unsafe and scary for women). Bad vibes only from the space and staff. read more

Not from the area but since I was visiting I decided to check out Goldstar to see if any productions were playing in the area and came across "Hair - the Musical" so decided to purchase tickets. As for the theatre itself, it is called Landmark so not sure if they changed the name from Shelton. In any case, totally reminds me of the theatres we have back in LA. The theatre is old, creeky, and for those who have bad knees and cannot climb stairs, there is plenty of 'em so proceed with caution. Once you're in the actual stage it is a big room but seating was uncomfortable and not enough leg room unless you are in the first row. Staff and cast were amazing though, very good actors and actresses as well as very friendly. read more

This was my fist time at this theater and I had a good time. My wife coworker was preforming in the play so that made it extra special. I saw Annie Warbucks and I thought they put on a really good play. One of the lead actors (I don't remember her name unfortunately) was amazing! The venue itself is a small privately owned theater. It's not modern in any way but its a cute little theater. They has a small concession stand with snacks and drink (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). The bathrooms were clean. We went to the recent Friday 8pm show for Cheaper than Therapy. Clean bathrooms, the place is not modern but you can tell it's taken care of and it's easy to find. If you're looking for an activity to do in the city and you gravitate towards warm, good energy, go here. Your time and money well spent. Came here for Cheaper than Therapy show a few weeks ago. Its such a small spot but not hard to find. Definitely appreciate the signage coming into and down the stairs. The bar area gets REALLYYYY packed before a show, even on a Sunday night, so high potential you'll be standing around for a little bit before sitting in the theatre. No big deal, there's tons of cute memorabilia, fun artwork, and interesting nooks and crannies to check out in the bar area. Also, loved all the good vibes of the staff working the tickets, doors, and bar. Great vibes! I will sayyyy that my beer was so foamy and I was a little nervous about that. I took a sip and it didn't taste bad but the bartender poured a lot of foam out, not my favorite thing to see. The jello shots were...jello shots lol. The bar is chill and waiting room esque, don't think to hard about it. You are really here for the show!! Show was great! Funny comedians! Left smiling too hard! Great little theater very intimate loved the Adams family, comfy seats they also have a vending area with candy, candy bars, freshly made popcorn and cans of variety of sodas and drinks. It's on the second floor the stairs are high however they have an elevator. Two bathrooms on the first floor very clean and there is a beautiful bar on the first floor also. We bought these tickets last minute do the end of our vacation trip, and I could not be happier. When you walk in you don't expect much sandwiched between a 7-11 and a cash change place. When you walk in though you won't regret a thing. It's so fun! They have see real differs places to go and the person who gives your tickets will help direct you. If you are still lost like we were the bartenders will help! We saw an improve show and oh my goodness it was funny. We have seen a lot of improve shows, and we agree this is one of the best. They have a lot of audience participation which made it so interactive and fun. If I could change one thing, I would have them repeat some of the games and make the show 1.5 hours as opposed to one hour only. Overall I would recommend this, because the performers are so talented and funny, everyone is welcoming, and it's a great price! read more

A group of 3 of us (+ my guide dog pup) decided to go to a Friday night show last minute. Easily the BEST decision we made during our visit to San Francisco. We bought our tickets online and arrived at 7:30 (half an hour before the show started). They had a bar upstairs and down for drinks (but no drink minimum, which is rare). Scott, who was one of the producers for the show "Cheaper than Therapy", spotted me with my dog and ensured we were able to sit up front to keep people from accidentally tripping over him since he didn't fit all the way under my seat (small theater seats). He checked on us again after the show to make sure everything went okay, which I appreciated. He even bought a drink for an attendee who was celebrating their birthday! We saw 5 comedians for around 10-15 minutes each. They were all hilarious and really engaging. Some of the jokes were a little raunchy, but well set-up, so they had all of us in stitches. This is a small theater, which made the experience all the better in my opinion. It allowed the comedians to really interact with the audience on a more personal level and we loved it. It was 100% worth our time and the price was SO reasonable (around $20 for about a 90 minute show). You'll definitely get your money's worth and MORE. We hung out with John, the owner/producer at the Shelton and he is a character! Very down to earth guy & was nice enough to buy our group a round of shots for my boyfriend's birthday. I never knew this place existed!! The Shelton Theater is a non-profit organization and has been a part of the San Francisco theater scene since 1993. The theater is an extension of the Shelton Studios which has been creating, supporting, and nurturing artists in the Bay Area since 1961. I came to watch the Fou Fou HA! Whoa-Man! A Musical on November 20th, 2015 from 8-930.I bought tickets from Groupon FOR $22.50 which was much cheaper than buying them from http://www.eventbrite.com where tickets were $35.00. SEATING: Stage left has 74 seats and stage right has 60 seats. The stage is very close up and intimate but fills up VERY quickly so get there early if you want good seating. PARKING: The Sutter/Stockton garage is close and reasonable. Street parking is free after 6pm. Pay close attention to all signs on the street. I was able to find parking near Union Square. BARS: There are two full bars located on eat of the floors. They have a list of drinks on the wall as well as pricing that makes it really convenient. ABOUT THE SHOW: Fou Fou Ha is an ensemble of animated performers who thrill audiences with over the top shows filled with Circus antics, jaw-dropping dance numbers to high-energy music and audience interactive playfulness. They are a family of enticing, colorful, sexy performers, each owning a unique character and color that celebrates individuality and unabashed human expression. The musical "Whoa-Man" is a satirical look at the lives of four women and the tortures in trying to find "perfection" in a modern world. A story only clowns could tell. Whoa-Man enters the lives of 4 women living in present day, each one searching for love via online dating mishaps and grappling with sexuality, power, body image and self-worth. The show, filled with sexy dance numbers and live singing, will riff off of current pop-culture frameworks such as 50-Shades of Grey and Lean-In and take a clown's perspective on the unrealistic expectations that we set on women. This show definitely left me wanting more. I laughed and sang at Fou Fou Ha's "Whoa-Man: A Musical" the whole 1hr and half of the show. It was almost as if I was going to that basement apartment on 14th Street to procure me a little something for the evening head and I suppose to a degree it was just that. A narrow hall leading from a non-descript entrance (there's signage but it isn't exactly a marquee), a friendly person to greet me inside, and then ... an evening of happiness. Derived be a different means than from that proffered on 14th, but absolutely enjoyable all the same. And I didn't have to look over my shoulder once. Little theaters and theater companies are cool. Not that the folks in the large companies don't work hard, they surely do, but the people in the little companies shoulder a different kind of burden. If one person in a company of a hundred messes up perhaps the critics won't even barely notice. But in a company of a more modest size ... I wouldn't even be able to sleep at night. There are two performance spaces here, I believe. I visited the downstairs, said by some to accommodate 80 people. It was certainly intimate and towards the end of the show from the lights and body heat and pleasant vibe, a bit warm (pleasant vibes are warmer than unpleasant vibes). Dress accordingly and bring me a clean body please. Too small for tea smell. The upstairs space might be a bit bigger and they are still showing Foodies so there will have to be a second visit with the lapin for all the obvious reasons. Put this on your list of interesting SF venues to experience. Dress to the eight's. Black tie optional. You won't be disappointed. read more

Tiny little theatre tucked away in San Francisco. It has a nostalgic speak easy feel which I absolutely enjoyed! You walk down this small hall way, down some very steep stairs, and arrive at this little bar greeted by a suave gentlemen bartender. He was also the one checking us in. The theatre itself was small, but cozy. You got a great view of the stage no matter where you sat. My manager starred in Extreme Measures. It was such a raunchy and hilarious play! read more

The show was great I can't really complain. I bought a groupon but in reality with or without a Groupon I would buy the actual ticket . I love comedy magic it's so funny and keeps me going . Through the whole show it kept me laughing. Also the most scary thing is when we first arrived the magician gave us all a card with a number and a black side we wrote a question.... The question could be totally random.... So I wrote my question on the card .... Someone in the audience held all the questions in a sealed envelope the whole time .... At the end of the show the magician pulled certain numbers ..... my number was called .... He knew my exact question.... It was so scary but cool at the same time!! The Shelton Theater was a seriously cool find in SF, thanks to Goldstar! We got last minute half-price tickets to God of Carnage on a Friday night. The theater is an easy (though slightly uphill) walk from the Powell St. BART station, and is surrounded by endless restaurant choices for pre-show dining. Keep an eye out for the simple black and white awning - this is a seriously small and cozy theater, don't be hunting for epic neon. There are 2-3 theater spaces inside, our show was in the downstairs theater which I believe sat around 75 people. Our program was our ticket, and there is a SUPERCOOL bar space downstairs outside the theater door to wait for your door to open. Limited options but everyone will be happy. I had a decent Chardonnay, BF had an Anchor Steam beer, and I saw Mexican Coke on the menu as well - way cool! The entire bar area is dimly lit with small tables, and the walls are covered with beautiful paintings. It had a bit of a speakeasy feel, and was such a nice departure from the mayhem of bigger theater crowds and fussiness. This was just mellow and cool. Inside the theater, for being such a small space, I didn't feel cramped at all. We were allowed to bring our drinks into the theater, which was surprising and very appreciated as it was a bit warm. Red velvet lines the seats and walls, and there is no bad seat in this house. The play was wonderful, actors were top notch. It's foolishly easy to assume such a small space would produce an amateur production, but this was really spectacular! Now that the Shelton is on my radar, I will keep my eyes peeled for future shows and very much look forward to returning! read more

I'm not a big musical guy, for a variety of reasons. My girl and I have been experiencing some challenges and i thought going out to SF for a show would be an excellent change of pace. To boot, I found "Party of 2-- The Mating Musical" on Goldstar for a bargain. The theater is in dire need of a makeover. It's old, tired and definitely needs some TLC. It's pretty tiny, seats about 45-50 peeps and you definitely feel like you are sitting on top of the stage and characters. The show was pretty funny at times and pretty lame at times. Male "actor" was terrible. Female actress was really good and presumably she is going places, if she ever gets her ass out of the SF Musical scene and finds a proper gig. Overall it was a good experience, but let's get real. Unless you are in NY, it's not a real musical. The space really needs some help because it's tiny, cramped and just not a pleasant experience. Hit me up when you guys are done with the redo and I will stop by for round 2. Otherwise and more practically, don't expect to see me again. read more

I've been down and out, being a bit of a news junkie. So I jumped at the chance to catch a musical review, even though most of the tunes were written in the '50's and '60's. Tucked away on the south side of Sutter Street between Powell and Mason, this gem of a theater is currently producing several shows, among them the one I saw today, "TomFoolery: The Wicked Words and Mischievous Music of Tom Lehrer." I laughed all the way through. If you are sick of the news and want some light-hearted satirical musical fun to lift your spirits, come here before June 16, 2019 and catch this wonderful show. For all you nascent Tom Lehrer fans out there, who think that his songs just can't *possibly* be relevant today --- watch out!--- there are clever updates to the lyrics, approved by Tom Lehrer himself that keep things funny and quite pointedly up to date. (As of June 2, 2019, that is!) I advise everyone who needs a break and a laugh to buy tix to this show, and it runs through June 16, 2019.) There's an elevator going downstairs, so the venue is accessible, and there's also a bar in the lobby. The theater is intimate and comfortable. I've been here a couple of times to watch small production musicals. And both times I've enjoyed myself thoroughly. Parking: It's SF, so parking will always be a problem here. This theater is even located near Union Square, so parking is even more difficult! But there are plenty of parking garage ready and willing to charge you an arm and a leg for 15 minutes of parking. Yikes! Theater: The theater itself is a small theater. It was multiple stages. When I went they actually had two shows/productions going on at the same time. It was nice because I was a little worried that I might hear the other production going on, but I didn't! Our show was so amazing, that I wouldn't have noticed anyways. We took BART to go to the Shelton Theatre to see the show "Shopping! The Musical". It's about 5 blocks from Powell Station. First time to see a show at Shelton Theatre. Shelton Theatre is at 533 Sutter St @ Powell, on the Left side of Sutter and about 1/2 block away. Look for the Shelton Theatre sign & Improv signs. Then walk into the long hallway all the way to the back, enter the door & there's someone that gives out programs to be used as a ticket. It's a small theatre about 5 rows of seats, fits 55 people. Seats aren't the most comfortable, but ok. It's general seating, first come, first serve. One unisex bathroom on the Left side at the end of the long hallway, another one upstairs. read more

Came here to watch "Foodies, the musical" the other night, it was a really great show, a little over an hour, no intermission. The musical itself was really funny. Just 4 actors were in it and one pianist tucked into the side of the space. They covered about 20 skits, with minimal props and great voices, it was a hoot for under $30 a person for an entertaining night, thanks Goldstar! Now for the theater space, it's pretty old and small. The movie theater-like seats are really uncomfy and made my lower back hurt. Be careful easing yourself into the seat cause you sink right into it a little too much, think a really old sofa couch at your parents' house. I found myself looking for the exit sign at one point just cause you are on the bottom floor and the building is old. read more

Such a surprise in every way - very cool old-style theater, great champagne (w a splash of St. Germaine) and hilarious comedians. There were 6 comedians who each performed for 10-15 minutes. Laughed the entire time and was wiping tears for most of them. Audience was fabulous too. Highly recommend. read more

What a theatre. I wish I could give it more stars. I cannot recommend going here enough.Buying tickets was easy online and we were still surprised with the atmosphere when we arrived. The bar upstairs was welcoming, artsy, and friendly and led to the theatre downstairs. The show was beyond hilarious. So many acts for only 20 dollars, it was a steal. I was laughing so hard the entire time. It was obvious that the performers were honestly funny, playing off a lot of audience response. If the comedy isn't enough for you, the after show bar will be. It's fun, rowdy, but also small and intimidate. I wish I I could come here for every show every night. SF needs more theatres like this! read more

What a gem! The Shelton is multiple theaters in one, with two bars hidden inside too! Everything you need for a cultured night out. The theater was perfectly intimate, with about 60 seats on a tiered slope, so every seat was a good seat. Before and after the show, you can hang at the upstairs or downstairs bar, complete with modern art paintings and vintage lighting. Such a sexy little hideaway! If you have an excuse to see a show here, do. You wouldn't expect such a cozy art-filled space would exist off Sutter Street. Impressed! read more

First came to this venue years & years ago when it was under another's name / ownership & I can happily report that Shelton Theater holds 2 titles for me: One Of The Worst Plays I've Ever Seen & One Of The Best Plays I've Ever Seen I won't mention the worst since that was an entire yr ago but the best just happened this past weekend. We had the extreme good fortune to catch FOODIES: THE MUSICAL OMG it was so incredibly funny! Masterful, musical, skits all about foodies & the foodie-culture & Yelp even had its shoutout We broached topics about kitchen gadgets, this guy who had a water-cellar; a doctor who told his patient they had to eat more fried foods; people arguing over paying the check; pretentious menus; reservation-counselors screening people for a restaurant.....just to name a few Totally entertaining, extremely clever lyrics / rhymes & fast paced to keep the group totally entertained. But this review isn't about the show.....it's about the venue! Downstairs a somewhat steep flight of stairs, you'll discover 2 theaters: on either side of a fun bar. Drinkys are allowed inside the theater & even outside beverages are permitted We've been to the lefthand-side theater ( when looking at the bar ) on every occasion Very small venue - all general admission - the back rows are best unless you happen to be the kind of person who likes sitting w/in eye shot of the players.....as many were this last time we were there. Shelton Theater is hidden away on Sutter, just a few feet from Union Square. It has two small theaters with only a few rows each, making the experience feel more intimate. There's a bar in the anteroom between the theaters, where you can order bottled water, wine or beer and take it in with you while you watch the show. Foodies: The Musical was hilarious! Who knew that there was a burgeoning musical scene in SF? I loved that it poked fun at the foodie culture, and did it with a lot of insight and witty lyrics to boot. I took Wonder Twin to see 'God of Carnage' here (general admission tix bought via Goldstar...seats are first come, first served, but we had 3rd row center seats, as the theater was only half full.) Cozy is an understatement--50 well-worn seats & a stage which barely held the four actors & the living room set. Not glamorous by any means. Hell, we almost missed the entrance! Cozy little theatre that is committed to giving quality theatrical organizations a chance to produce good work and perform for a real San Francisco audience. Conveniently located a block above Union Sqaure. The set up is very quaint with small stage and about 70+ seats. After performing in Lovers and Other Strangers here, I have a soft spot for this place. The whole building is also great with 3 other stages housed in it. I would just warn visitors to be careful walking up and down the steep stairs. Can't wait to see more productions at this place. read more

Took my girlfriend to see "Party of 2 - Mating Musical" at The Shelton. Discounted tickets on Goldstar. The theatre is up the street from the Sutter garage which is near Macy's for those out of towners. Keep a eye out for the place as it's cutey tucked in the middle of the block, good thing for street numbers. If you are looking for an intimate experience I suggest finding the next show, the theatre was small roughly 50-60 people seating. We sat in the middle and the performance was spooky, as the performers were literally two arm throws away. Very cool, hard to break eye contact. Party of 2 covered the age old topic of relationships and the progression made through our personal encounters. Witty and entertaining as we sat through the cycle of the "actors' relationship" The place was equally flexible as I sat comfortably with a nice warm cup of Starbucks while enjoying the musical before me. read more

Took my gf to see "Party of 2 - Mating Musical" at The Shelton. Cute little theatre up the street from the Sutter-Stockton garage. It's tucked in the middle of that block and we almost walked right past it had I not been reading address numbers along the way. I loved how intimate the theatre was. We sat in the last row, but still felt like we were in the first few rows. =) Party of 2 covered a topic we all (male & female) can relate to. I thought the musical was funny, entertaining and downright enjoyable! Absolutely loved Jennifer Ekman's voice and the harmonies with Scott Gessford's voice! On a side note, since the theatre is downstairs (basement area) and does not have air conditioning it can get a little warm. Dress in layers (that you can shed), bring something you can fan yourself with or think cool thoughts. =) read more
