This is a business that thrives on predatory practice. When I notified the SCC of their thievery, it became clear that nothing is punishable for SVEC. It was explained to me that the SCC did, in fact, find that SVEC was stealing from me, charging me 3 times what a house of my size could even draw in a month's time (kWh), and that the resolution they reached was to tell SVEC they were stealing from me and let them decide what to do about it. Imagine my surprise when a monopoly company kept stealing rather than fixing its problems (sarcasm). My home isn't fed the proper amount of power, which, of course, takes its toll on my meter and jacks up the bill. SVEC has been made aware of this for the last 5 years. Then I find that 2/3 of my usage is taken and charged again as a distribution fee. Forgive me, but how is their mishandling of funds now my financial responsibility? I have gone so far as to send in BBB complaints showing they're lying on my bills, but those go unanswered. SVEC isn't worried about our complaints. Why would they be? They have no competition and no higher authority to answer to. If you're new to the area, don't get too comfortable. You'll be taxed to death here, and there isn't a thing you can do about it. read more

My husband is currently in the hospital due to a manic episode he is unable to talk with anyone or pay anything. I called about how much I owe and they wouldn't give me the info because I'm not on the account even though I legally live at this address. Last month they cut the electric with no notice and I said "I don't want that to happen again because I'm on food stamps and had to throw all my food out." I was willing to pay them and they won't even tell me what I owe. This is an emergency. And nothing I can do about it so I'm gonna lose power. They said they'd have to talk to him and I was like you can't he's hospitalized. This place sucks. I know it's policy but you'd think they'd make an exception if they want their money then they shouldn't care if you're not the act owner as long as you are willing to pay them. Sorry for posting from an anonymous account. I have a unique name and other family. members living in the area, but I need to say what I need to say about this terrible company. I assumed my SVEC account was current. I just received 3 letters in the mail all at the same time. A bill, a notice of pending termination, and a letter requesting a 3 month deposit because my payment history is "unsatisfactory". To be clear, I pay all of my bills on time. I don't have anything in collections. My credit history is great. I pay every bill as soon as I get it, and am rarely late with anything unless by some mistake in processing. I'm not sure if they even sent me my bill for March, or if it got lost in the mail. Sure, I should have noticed that I didn't get a bill. But like most people, I have much more important things to worry about than if certain bills arrive on time or not. Still. This is inappropriate. This exact situation has happened with me before with SVEC. I was frustrated but I just went along with what they told me to do. Both of my next door neighbors say it has happened to them at least once as well. A normal, sane thing to do would be to send the second bill (with the late notice and late fees), wait 3-4 weeks, then if no payment has been received, send termination notices with a reasonable window of time for termination. I'm not sure what other companies normally do, but I think that you can expect for a few bills to get lost in the mail when you have hundreds of thousands of customers. On the bill they just sent me - the "statement date" is April 10th, the termination threat is April 13th, and I did not receive this letter in the mail until April 16th. How on earth could that be considered a reasonable way to do business? They're expecting customers to receive a letter in the mail and pay it within 3 days of sending the letter. I didn't receive the letter for 6 days. I called and tried to explain this to them, but they just gave me the runaround and refused to take responsibility for anything. I love to support local businesses to the best of my ability, but not when they behave like this. I'm looking forward to finding a different electric company. read more

A monopoly company that treats you like garbage they are always sending shutoff notices this Christmas our bill was due 24 and they gave us a shutoff notice for the 30th wtf is that he six days to pay a new bill or a shutoff not to mention they will cut your flowering trees down even if it's not close to the lines and will have trees that only have branches on one side that eventually blow over and if the power goes out god luck getting it restored within a day or two....sad thing is nothing we can do only electrical company in my area truly bad company that one day I hope the commonwealth investigates. read more

I have chosen to waste this part of my day to let the world know, SVEC is TERRIBLE. Not only is the service sub par, they also charge you for EVERYTHING. Last month my "SVEC Distribution Charges", which are variable to their benefit, were almost the same cost as my electric bill itself! As well, they consistently send "Late Notice Termination" threats with almost every other bill - even though I have automatic bill pay and it takes the money out the exact day it is due.. To top it off, their customer service is disturbingly absent. I would be so bold as to say literally every time I call I am placed on hold for upwards of 25 minutes before hanging up and hoping redial wont procure the same result. Upon receiving those letters I would be so terrified that my electric was about to be shut off that I would call and wait for an hour or more just trying to have questions answered and fears sated. Never once have I spoken to a person. After being unable to connect with any representative beyond Qwerty, I waited it out. Gradually, as days would pass, of course I realized my electric wasn't being turned off; days filled with a tremulous fear that I would come home to a dark house. As well I am moving again and have the actual date. I have spent all week calling them, trying to give them advance notice of needing my service switched to the new location...we have yet to connect with a human rep. More often than not we wait 30 minutes and call hours later, no change. There are no competing companies in our area; nothing will change as long as they are not checked or challenged. If there were a negative star option for scoring the worst business/consumer relationship ever, the winner is SVEC. read more

I really miss Allegheny! I have two meters on my home. They send me the bill for both meters with one return envelope. Every bill, I pay within 2 days of receipt. This is now the second time that they have applied my entire payment to one meter. They then send "notice of pending termination" on the other account claiming it is past due. When I called, they refused to remove the late fee even though it is their fault for applying the payment wrong. I now have to go and send in another payment within the next 10 days or they will cut off the service to my main house. Meanwhile, I have a large credit balance on my inlaw apartment. Makes no sense to me why they can't just transfer the balance since it was their error and waive the late fee. Again, I really miss Allegheny! read more

I remember having to deal with the damn power outages when I lived in Shenandoah all the time. They went for hours and SVEC doesn't seem to care. How many times can they have a tranformer blow before they discover they need to replace something else? It is really awful when it's cold you can't turn on the heat. My mom has a koi fish pond in her backyard and the power supplies the oxygen pump so the fish can breathe. If the power goes out for hours, the fish start suffocating and dying. The power must got out at least every month from anywhere between 2-6 hours. One of the reasons moved is just because I couldn't stand the power outages any more. It is not normal for a place to have that many power outages. read more

The SVEC doesn't even deserve a single star. They are taking advantage of customers, lying to the State Commission, making enough overage to give raises to people like CEO Rummell over $100,000 raise in just 4 years and another more than $50,000 in bonuses just to him. While he making bankroll we are now paying nearly 12% higher rates on our electric bills and numerous RiDER charges added to the bills in access to the monthly charges and no explanation as to what they are for. Also, the few other VIP's in this company along with him have racked up into the millions in their pockets while our electric bills are running us upto and above our mortgages. The are running commercials and magazines, which is not necessary when their is no marketing needed. There is no competition because the Commission assigns areas. They are sponsoring random news and continually blaming the weather for the high bills, yet most in our area are using wood, gas and kero for heat instead of electric. Not to mention, fuels and coals used to make are lower than in recent years. They have installed meters that are causing power surges on the regular and have been found to cause fires and release dangerous radiation. read more

Agreed with all the negative comments....Allegheny was a lot better. We paid every 2 months and that combined was NEVER as much as one month is with SVEC. Then if you happen to have some late payments you get a nice $205 deposit for 3 months tacked on to the already high bills you cant pay in first place. Like that makes a lot of sense, oh but if your good and pay ontime for 12 months you can get that back. Good luck with that since its like a car payment to begin with. And the best thing about it is, we cant do a single thing about it but pay it. Then they have the nerve to say, " We exist to serve our Members-Owners." LMAO, ROFL!!!!! This people are rip offs!!! Rather than take a letter of credit from my previous supplier they want a deposit up front and the deposit is based on the PREVIOUS tenants last 2 months bill. I happen to be single and the previous tenants where I live were a FAMILY!!!!! Because their bill was $200 for the last 2 months my deposit was $400. I had to pay $150 up front and the rest in 2 month increments which means that is ON TOP of my electric bill. I have NEVER had an electric bill that high EVER!!!!! I hope someone will start a petition to shut these crooks down!!!! I will help in whatever way possible. read more

THIS IS THE WORST ELECTRIC COMPANY ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET. They mess up your payments, because they are sent off to another state so they can't pull up any of your payments. I'm a student and if I could get another electric company I would in a heartbeat. We are even discussing moving because of them. They charge you twice for the electric through "distribution charges" that you use where other companies only charge you once. I live in an apartment that was built two years ago and I have had one electricity bill that was under $100. That is ridiculous. We are freezing cold because the heat is so low and we turn off all the lights that are not being used. I called and asked to see how my electricity is being used, as it is readily available for some of the people I know on other electric suppliers. They were unable to send me one, but they sent me a graph telling me how we have changed the temperature in the apartment, as if that is helpful. I really hate this electric company so much that I am thinking about moving out of the apartment complex I am in just to make sure I don't have to deal with them anymore. read more
