Both practice in the office next door to the Red Cross and I must say that I haven't had better dentists. First of all, Scott is a hottie, and that is a perfectly fine reason to go see your dentist. :-) Above and beyond that, the hygenists are thorough and they give you tips about how you should take care of your teeth better (rather than just saying you need to brush or floss more) and they provide you with tools you may need to do that (i have these dental sticks that i absolutely hate) My dentist also takes care of bite issues, headache problems, and he gives a little temple massage during an examination that makes being in that God Awful chair just slightly more enjoyable. If you need a dentist, I highly recommend either Scott or his father Larry.

I need to hype myself up just to book the appointment, and then double that to actually show up. But, a friend recommended Derksen Dentistry, and after some extensive (read: borderline obsessive) research, I decided to take the plunge. I needed an advanced root canal and figured, why not throw in a cleaning while I'm at it? The first thing that set the tone was my call to Susan. She was so calming and reassuring that I felt like I was calling a life coach, not a dentist's office. She promised me they'd make my visit as relaxing as possible, which is a tall order when you're about to face down a drill and some sharp objects in your mouth. When I arrived, I was promptly greeted (on time, too, which felt like an anomaly in itself). The assistant was super helpful, constantly checking in with me during the x-rays, which was nice since I was pretty sure my mouth was about to go on strike from all the poking. Then came Dr. Derksen. Now, I'm not the type to buy into "auras" or anything, but this guy had an aura of, "Hey, I've got this. You can relax." I felt it. He triple-checked to make sure I was completely numb before starting the root canal--because apparently, "feeling your teeth getting drilled" is not on anyone's bucket list. The whole process went smoothly, and to my surprise, I didn't leave feeling like I'd just fought a battle with a power tool. What really sealed the deal was that they followed up the next day to check on me. I mean, where else do you get a dentist who cares enough to make sure you're not secretly plotting your revenge on him for the trauma? Long story short, I walked out of Derksen Dentistry with all my teeth intact and a new, surprisingly positive outlook on dental visits. Dr. Derksen, you've earned a lifetime patient... just maybe not a lifetime of root canals, please.

His front desk staff asked me to pay up front $500 and next visit $500, I wasn't comfortable with this as I had never been asked to pay up prior to any dental services before. They owe me $200 which I have been asking for since Feb 2024. I have spoken directly to East Lansing Modern Dental biller supervisor, I have had my dental insurance co speak with her several times and now I will be leaving this review and contacting BBB and Consumer Protection Agency/AG's Office. I am not well and this whole thing has stressed me out. The biller knows what she has to do because my dental insurance co has directed her to do it but she refuses.

I paid the deductible. During this time, East Lansing Modern Dental took over the business. On 4/1/2022, I was contacted by East Lansing Modern Dental claiming that I had an unpaid bill for the above procedure, despite MetLife and myself having already paid the claim to Midwestern Dental. I sent them the Explanation of Benefits forms that I received from MetLife Insurance and told them that this procedure had already been paid for. On 7/12/2022 I was contacted by a debt collection company on their behalf. Currently reviewing legal options and awaiting further information after submitting complaints to the MI Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs and the MI Consumer Protection office.

In the past, for routine dental care, they have cancelled my other dental appointments without notifying me of the cancellation. This is the most unprofessional dental office I have ever visited. Buyer beware, they are also very expensive compared to other dental companies.
