We love independent book stores. We like Sherman's, which has been around Freeport since 1998 and is one of a group of Sherman stores around the state (the chain started in Bar Harbor, apparently). Our first visit recently was good but not exceptional. It's a moderately large store with a very large areas set aside for gifts, toys, puzzles, Maine souvenirs, etc. We thought their classics section and history were a bit underwhelming, but we enjoyed going through bargain books and just spending time looking through the inventory. We did not find the staff particularly friendly; they seemed distracted even when we checked out. Maybe they were having a bad day... Even so, it's a nice bookstore and there are few better places to spend time anywhere.

This is a good independent bookstore which also carries a good amount of Maine souvenirs, gifts, postcards and greeting cards. This store has a decent book selection including tables of bargain books (though not deeply discounted like at other bookstores) and shelves of Maine related books. I did not find the Images of America book series in the store, but there were plenty of books by local authors. The layout of the store is crammed with lots of merchandise, so it can be hard to move around especially with lots of customers in the store. I did buy some hardcover books with some very cool Maine photography for my coffee table reading, at list price and not on sale. I did not see those books earlier at Borders and B&N. And the job was finished in a timely fashion, just as promised. We had considered replacing the chairs, but for less than half that expense we were able to keep the chairs we've enjoyed for almost fifty years. We highly recommend doing business with The Craft Shop in Windham, ME.

Well, stop I did, to see if they had a gift for a friend's birthday. First, I love any store that smells like balsam as you walk through the door. The scent makes me feel like a kid again. I'm not from Maine (have been here long enough to feel at home), but as a kid we used to drive here from Ohio and spend a few weeks going up and down the coast. The smell of balsam reminds me of these trips. Second, I was shocked by the variety they had. Maple syrup, Maine souvenirs, crafting supplies, wooden figurines, and antiques. The have a sign stating that they "glue chairs". I didn't know that was a thing, but apparently, it is... They also sell wreaths and Christmas trees during the appropriate season. And finally, the owners were as nice as could be. They had out hot chocolate for the kids, and they wrapped my little gift up neatly. This little shop is well worth the drive into town because of how darn cute it is!

Located in the main outlet shopping area, this store sells locally-produced merchandise and crafts from 20-25 vendors. You'll find everything from t-shirts to books to syrup to soap, as well as my personal favorite, Christmas ornaments. Every vacation , I buy a Christmas ornament, and with so many booths in this market, I found several to choose from and left with a cute lobster ornament. The crafts here are unique and much better than what you'll find in the airport or some of the stores in nearby Portland. I'm glad we found it on our first day and I got my shopping knocked out early in our trip!

It's sort of like Etsy, but in a brick and mortar form. The Freeport Market is exactly the same concept where locals can rent space and display their items for sale. I forgot to mention all the items are "Maine Made" which I believe has to be requirement. I didn't speak with any staff so I can't speak to the customer service. You don't see them walking around much, but standing near the counter. The value for the items will vary as the renter sets the price for their items. Some look for a premium price on their items, other's look for a reasonable price understanding what the market says for those types of items. If you are looking for Maine made items and willing to pay a premium price on them, this store is for you, but you can typically get the items cheaper through their website or at a local craft fair.
