The atmosphere was welcoming, friendly, and casual. The season had started but Lisa, the instructor, and the other students were very accommodating in helping us catch up to where the rest of the class was. Lisa is an excellent instructor too - lots of experience, great at explaining things, and very patient. All things we really needed haha. We were worried that we wouldn't be able to catch up, but it turned out to be okay! We had a lot of fun, both at the barre and even learning some choreography from a ballet we both recently saw. There were all levels of students, but each level seemed to be catered to just fine even though we were all mixed in together. Some exercises were adjusted for the different levels and we could do what was comfortable for us. I've taken other adult ballet classes that have been great too, but if you're looking for something doesn't require commitment, this is ideal. Most of all, you really can't beat the price. Recitals are an option (though we have decided not to perform haha), and there are other adult classes too. We're both really excited for our next class and also to check out some of those others soon!

I tried the Wednesday night complimentary yoga. It's free, but donations are taken at the end. The music is more of an african dance rhythm. I enjoyed having a different musical genre than the typical. They also have cardio shimmy, pole classes, ballet and modern dance, samba, personal cultivation workshops for young ladies, and a host of other monthly themed events. Very reasonably priced $10-$20/class. A really empowering environment for young ladies and us seasoned adults. Tip: Last door on the right. The first doors are to the apartment lofts. House of Bastet has it's on entrance. You may miss it if you're not paying attention.

I attended a ballerobics dance party. This event occurs every 3rd Friday and each month features a different theme. It is an exercise class disguised as a party ;-) I considered the event to be somewhat of a sampler of the many fitness classes that are offered here on a regular basis. The theme of this particular party was soca and reggae, need I say more??? The environment is very warm, friendly and welcoming even to a "shy", novice like myself. This class had about 20-30 women and 3 instructors throughout the course of the nite. Each instructor was very skilled and changed the vibe of the class with their unique personalities. We were encouraged to bring a refreshment to share and by the end of the nite had a great assortment. I cannot give away every little treasure that this place has to offer, but I will say expect to be taken outside of your comfort zone within a supportive environment while at the same time feeling liberated. I definitely hope to attend again and recommend trying it. It is an exciting alternative to a traditional workout. My concern was parking. It doesn't have a private lot, but at the time of day that I went (after 7pm), there was ample parking on the street. Note the new address: 1301 Lafayette Detroit, MI

My issue, however, is with the abhorrent waiting area & lobby. With as many families and children who enter and exit the building, there is zero excuse not to have built a larger more accommodating front lobby. Kids and teens kick off their shoes and leave them EVERYWHERE while the lack of seating forces some parents to wait in the car (keep in mind, there is only curbside parking unless you leave your vehicle across the road in a CVS lot). I wish they could knock out a wall, reduce the size of the main studio or figure something out. Again, not much thought was put in to this aspect of the facility. While I stress that the actual instruction is outstanding, there is very little organization when it comes to ushering students aged 3-6 in & out of their lesson. This age requires guidance and direction, but in between classes is a free-for-all. Instructors should retrieve, line up and lead their students into whichever area they're heading to. Given the aforementioned situation with the waiting area, it'd be a huge help in reducing some of that front lobby chaos. Ms. Pat is incredibly knowledgeable, kind hearted and direct with both her staff and the families who attend. It's a great studio, especially for first timer little ones and I recommend DDA to anyone seeking options for dance. Just be aware of the surrounding factors listed above and you won't be as surprised/frustrated as I've seen some parents be.

Oh my goodness... fell in love with this place tonight!…read more I have been fruitlessly searching for a quality Hip Hop class for a long time now ... each time I would sign up for one it ended up being cancelled bc not enough people registered. Finally... I FOUND A CLASS and it is a fantastic studio that I HIGHLY recommend. Dance Theatre Studio is right in the heart of U of M's campus. It is a second story location above Moe's sporting goods store. Great walkable area if you want to grab a bite or a drink after classes. It is a narrow spot and it was very very crowded in the waiting area, yet it is truly a wonderful space! They have an office in the sort of attic upstairs, and the man who I think owns the place is so so sweet- his name is John. He was helpful, and kind, and very endearing. There are 3 studio spaces A, B, and C. There are also small changing areas for men and women. Studios A and B are larger- C is a smaller space. They offer so many classes here .... Zumba, Cardio Barre, Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, Pilates, Body Sculpting,Tap ...for ALL different skill levels and ages. I personally am taking a Hip Hop class and I can't wait to continue classes here for years to come.It is a very well organized studio and it has a really helpful and easy website which I appreciate. My first class was SO fun !!! The instructor was not only a talented dancer and teacher - she was great at amping up the energy of the class and making everyone comfortable. Class starts out with a warm up - including crunches, plank, push ups. We learned great choreography to fun music and then cooled down and stretched. I'm so thrilled to have discovered this place... if you've ever thought about taking dance you should totally try it !!!!!

I'm a modern dancer without a lot of jazz experience, so I was a little worried about jumping into an intermediate class at a studio I wasn't familiar with, but everyone was super welcoming. The class was fast-paced and mostly regulars. I would be cautious of coming to this particular class if you don't have some experience, because I could see it being frustrating. Michelle didn't take a lot of time to offer corrections and taught the choreography quickly, but not too quickly for the class -- everyone was at least getting a sketch of it, but everyone also seemed challenged by it (I was!). She seemed to have a good sense of what parts were difficult for the class in the moment. She also picked some rad music. I would totally go back if I lived here!
