The owner, Julee, is very very knowledgable, helpful, and an incredible artist! The other people that work there are so kind and helpful too. Parking is easy, and the prices for classes are wonderful! They provide all the materials, and the environment is great for getting into flow state. I highly suggest getting the 6-pack for a discounted price. I was able to bring friends/family with me on the 6-pack. Try it out if you're looking for a nice way to sow your creative seeds. :) Attached are some VERY basic things that I did... while I'm not really artistic, I sure did enjoy the process. Now I even bought a bunch of stuff at home to do it there too. But even with the home things, the environment here is just worth every second!

I feel weird writing a review, as I took one class here (millinery), and they do so much. You can…read moremake brooms, felt a custom pair of slippers, do blacksmithing, even make a longbow. (Or you can do more typical crafty things like ceramics, or learn to use your sewing machine.) They're part of the county park district, and the breadth of classes they offer is amazing. Prices are reasonable and supplies are included. The mission (from their website) is: "The Michigan Folk School is committed to creating a community engaged in authentic, hands-on experiences through the teaching and sharing of traditional folk arts, crafts, music, and skills in an inspiring natural setting and to promote the preservation of forest and farmland." They do, and how. Anyway, I crossed two state lines to take a one-day millinery class (hatmaking), offered a couple of times a year either as two evenings or a full day. There aren't a lot of places that teach millinery, and while it was more basic than a class I took elsewhere, that other location has moved to Kentucky, and beggars can't be choosers. If I hadn't taken that other class I wouldn't have known about some things that were simplified (we didn't apply sizing; the brim edges weren't stitched; barbed elastic cord wasn't available; I don't think we curved the petersham ribbon for the sweatbands; no one made a hat with a separate brim and crown...). Everyone, including me, left with a felt hat we'd made ourselves that we were happy with, including people who knew zilch about hatmaking when they came in. Teacher was very helpful, sending out suggestions ahead of time and instructions on how to measure our heads in additon to asking what color and type of hat we wanted to make so she could bring it. She provided a good introduction, an idea book, and had enough tools to keep us all productive and happy, and was super patient. Bringing your own sewing supplies is helpful but not required - I was happy to have a couple of needles, a needle threader and scissors just so I didn't have to wait for them. There's time for lunch while your hat dries (they're formed with steam); honestly, the two-evening class is probably a better option if you're local. Nice selection of hat blocks; do some research and do some thinking ahead of time. You may want to bring your own trim if you have something specific in mind (feathers? a particular type of ribbon or floral trim?), since the teacher brought some but the stock isn't deep and is brought in special. I made a pillbox hat and if I were doing this again, I would have asked about elastic or googled "barbed elastic cord for hats" and spent $5 on some before coming. The teacher suggested I braid thin elastics which works but having taken the other class I know "there's an app for that" and wish I'd planned ahead. The directions about where to go onsite which they provided ahead of time were helpful, but do allow extra time to get here if you haven't been before; it's outside of town, located on a farm.

Highly suggest doing the tour before you register for a class and or membership because you will get a discount on your first class. The trainer was super attentive and will help you build up your confidence even if you came nervous like I did. You always hearing horror stories about things not going right when people use tools even after watching YouTube channels. I attended the three saw class which included on hand training and techniques on the panel, miter, and table saw. Please note in order to use their tools outside of training you would need to become a member which is still a great opportunity for someone who's trying to start or began a new crafting and or trade. Did I mention that there's two shop dogs there? Yes, they're two bloodhounds that walks around in the lobby. Unfortunately they're not always there but I believe they are in the a.m. so if you do a tour make sure you say hi and they have treats available. Strongly recommend this place. AR Workshop is a DIY shop where you can sign up to do pre-determined crafts throughout the week and weekends. Examples include cake stands, signs, tote bags, and clocks. The inside is adorably decorated with a modern rustic theme. There are large tables where you and your group can sit at to work on your crafts together inside. You can also book a private event in advance through their website which is pretty easy to navigate. There is ample parking space which is always a plus. I came for their grand opening with a friend. This event was well-planned and so much fun! They had teal decorations and balloons everywhere and were well-stocked with alcoholic drinks, water bottles with their logo, sparkling juice, a charcuterie platter, shrimp with cocktail sauce, and burritos. Guests were able to make a simple craft which were small wooden boards with various stains and cute phrases stenciled on top you could choose to paint with a variety of shades and colored glitter. They even had a cute photobooth 'van' outside, live music, and raffles throughout the evening. Seriously well-planned, my friend and I had a great time. This would be a great place for showers, bachelorette parties, birthdays, and special celebrations. I'm excited to come here for another event in the future!

I actually left without them even putting the legs on my stand because they split one of my friends projects by nailing where they shouldn't have. They ruined the whole look. There were several parties happening, but it didn't feel overwhelming. The play area is clean and the obstacle course/maze was a lot of fun for the children in our family. The pizza was good.
