I came to celebrate a co-workwrs birthday . It was not crowded which made for a beautiful evening. The food and drinks were blah, nothing to write home about, its just pizza. We recently visited Shields Pizza before taking our son to the airport. He previously lived in Detroit and always spoke highly of Shields, so the three of us wanted to enjoy one last meal there together. The pizza was very good and lived up to its reputation. The drinks were average, and unfortunately the service was quite slow despite the restaurant not being busy. I want to be clear that I fully support tipping for good service. In fact, even with less-than-ideal service, I gladly left a 20% tip. The problem arose when I got home and reviewed my receipt more carefully. I discovered that a 20% gratuity had already been added to the bill, resulting in the server receiving a 40% tip. Had we been informed that gratuity was already included, I would not have added an additional tip. When I called the restaurant, the employee who answered the phone was surprisingly rude. When I asked to speak with a manager, she insisted on knowing why. After I explained the situation, she responded that she receives extra tips all the time and claimed she often gets 60-70% tips. She then stated that the restaurant doesn't have to tell customers about the automatic gratuity because it's "written all over the menu." After being placed on hold, I spoke with the manager. He also stated that a 20% gratuity is automatically added for parties of three or more. When I explained that I had not noticed that information, he responded, "So what do you want me to do, ask the server for the money back?" My answer was yes. To his credit, he took my address and later mailed me a money order for the additional 20% tip that had been left in error. After the call, I reviewed the menu online and found that it states an 18% gratuity - not 20% - is added for parties of FOUR or more. The pizza was excellent, but the service, communication regarding gratuity, and especially the way my concerns were handled left a lot to be desired. While I appreciate that the manager ultimately corrected the overcharge, a simple explanation and a more professional response from both employees would have gone a long way. *I have a photo of the online menu stating an 18% gratuity will be added for parties of four or more. Visiting Detroit for the weekend with my friends; we looked up "best pizza in Detroit" and Shields came up. As soon as we came in, we were greeted by Joe who was a great host! He even told us about a few places we could go to later in the evening. Our server Jason was very energetic and very friendly. We ordered BBQ chicken pizza, buffalo wings, spicy chicken sandwich, the gold medal pizza, shields super pizza, hot honey wings and salad. It's a nice space with kaoroke in the evenings and a great menu. Great for friends, family, date night or a solo meal. Would definitely return!! read more

This was a great stop for pizza, but to say it even comes close to comparing to Buddy's is shameful! This was too cheesy with not enough sauce. Also its bad when a waitress doesn't mention that the tip is included in the total. Food was ok. Before the bill came, I gave the waitress a $5 bill for a tip, she was late delivering my meal (others at my table were halfway done before I got mine) but it was because someone had fallen in the kitchen and my waitress helped her. When I got the bill, it had an automatic gratuity on it. In the total line, I wrote an amount without that gratuity. When I looked at my credit card summary, they had billed me the entire amount. Went in for dinner before the TSO show at LCA. They were a bit understaffed however we were greeted and sat fairly quickly. Service was prompt and efficient. The restaurant was clean and had a cool vibe. Our food selections were well prepared. I had the traditional Detroit style pizza to share with out of town guests. It was of course delicious. The other entrees were well received by the rest of the family. It's not just a pizzeria. With salmon, fish and chips, pastas and other great entrees, Shields gives everyone some great options to choose from. Definitely worth checking out. read more

This review is regarding the tip. They charge you a $9.00 tip on a $47.50 bill without a choice. This is an 18% tip, Ok, not unreasonable. But then, the receipt says RECOMENDED TIP: first one 18% $8.10. BUT, they already charged you 18%. So now your lowest choice is really $8.10 PLUS the $9.00 which is $17.10......;which is really 36%. this is a rip off. Because it is misleading you on the real % of your tip. read more

Every time I've come to Shields restaurant it's always been for takeout. I haven't spent time inside as of yet, but I can tell you that my experience when coming into the restaurant has always been pleasant. I ordered a barbecue chicken, a meat lovers and a vegetarian pizza. My favorite between the three was the barbecue chicken. Absolutely delicious. I love me a good deep dish pizza with the golden crust to give it that nice crunch and don't forget the crushed red peppers . That always give a little kick. read more

The crust was decent, but there was too much sauce and the ratios were off. If you're in a pinch, this will do. There are better options out there though. read more

From the antipasto salad we got to start off, to the classic pepperoni pizza, everything was fresh and flavorful. I can see why this place has won awards for their pizza. Was here recently for a farewell celebration for a student in our program and was quite impressed! Not my favorite Detroit style pizza, but service was friendly, food was solidly good, and the bartender was surprisingly good for a pizza joint! Three times, I've arrived between 7:30PM and 8:45PM and I've been turned away every time. They turn away multiple groups after 7:30PM, because they're "wrapping-up." My group ate here for dinner during dlectricity and were seated right away though the place was pretty packed! They had a decent selection of beer for good prices. They also had just recently introduced a spicy chicken sandwich so of course that's what I got. The piece of chicken was huge and it was pretty on par with other chicken sandwiches. Not even gonna lie it was EXTREMELY similar to a Popeye's chicken sandwich (which I think is a top tier chicken sandwich so that's a good thing to be compared to lol). This is my neighborhood pizza joint, and I'm so grateful it's Shield's. I was ordered carry-out and dined in when I could during Covid protocol times, and recently I treated my niece and nephews to a pizza feast. Their salads are excellent. I often have the antipasto salad solo or share it with friends. It's a Detroit classic with quality ingredients. Their Maurice is also delicious, though the dressing is heavy, so for this one, I always get it on the side. Their wings are large and good. I like the dry rub, and they've always been well-cooked. Their Detroit-style pizza is a winner. My favorite is the Gold Medal which never disappoints . Any of their pizzas with garlic listed as an ingredient have an over-the-top delicious flavor that is hard to match. Shield's seems to be struggling with staffing like many other restaurants right now, so service has been inconsistent, but not bad. Bar service, which in the past was excellent, seems a bit distracted as bartenders appear to be doing double-duty. Sometimes orders take a bit long, and checking in on drinks seems to get forgotten, still they generally do alright for these times. If you're on a tight timeline, though, let them know and make sure they are up for it. read more

My guilty dietary pleasure is a full-on, real meat, real everything, hamburger and fries. Since I'd had a decent one the night before on my recent business trip to Detroit, I thought I'd try the pastrami on my first visit to Shield's. Fortunately, my server steered me back in course to the awesome hamburgers here. I chose the California Burger (ironic since I was visiting from California), which includes big beef patty, onion rings, onions, tomatoes, avocado (hence "California"), special sauce, dill pickles, mushrooms, cheese, and other stuff. All on a fresh brioch-like bun. I chose fries as my included side - chips are the other standard option - and a glass of the recommended "Shield's Lager" to go with it. Through this ordering experience, I was really impressed by having all the employees at the restaurant be actual intelligent and hard working adults. I mean, at a level I don't expect to encounter even in a very nice pizza and burger place like this. My burger was totally great! Juicy and fresh tasting. It had that extra savory, full spectrum taste that can only come from great ingredients that are perfectly prepared. It makes my mouth water just thinking and writing about it now. One thing that caught my attention was that the mushrooms were perfectly grilled as well. Not over cooked and mushy, or nearly raw, as some places will do. The fries were super. I didn't end up with a bunch of over cooked dark ones as sometimes happens. The 3/8" thick fries were all crispy in the outside and soft in the inside like they're supposed to be. Many places that have good burgers still fail, in my opinion, to produce a good fry. I think it is harder to do than many of us think. In any case, Shield's has this art really down. Lastly, the Shield's Lager was perfect for me. It is not a sharp tasting hoppy beer. It is more like a smooth session beer that really goes well with food and doesn't reset your taste buds to obscure the meal. If I didn't need to drive to DTW I would have had a second one. The decor is a lot of fun and very interesting. They have bottle openers, hockey pucks, baseball gloves and more with descriptions of how they got there on the wall. Why would I review a "Basic" place like Shields? Because it is in Downtown Detroit, it is a new business, and someone who wants to stop in may be curious about their offerings. Why does anyone write a review? Gosh. Food actually came out pretty quick. The salad was much larger than I anticipated. Lots of toppings, not all iceberg lettuce, and plenty of meat to cheese ratio. I got the antipasta btw. The pizza was about the size I expected for the price. For that lunch special, you can choose Pepperoni, Cheese or the POD (Pizza of the Day), that day- It was anchovies and mushrooms. So I passed.
