Discriminates against babies and young children: We made a reservation to celebrate mother's day across three generations. We sent an email to pre-order a duck and asked for a high chair for a toddler and we would bring an infant. Two minutes later, we received a phone call to say the restaurant was full and we were no longer allowed to come. Surely the restaurant will maintain this false alibi, but as a test we asked friends to book the same-sized table online and also on the phone. Both tables were booked and on the phone the same exact person confirmed immediate availability. It is a real shame as the food is quite good. We have done Chinese New Year here and birthdays here before. However, the front of house staff do absolutely no justice to the chefs. In Chinese culture we have round tables because families eat together. This restaurant, however, discriminates against babies and young children, and to have done this on mother's day is an absolute disgrace. Shame on you. read more

Very nice elegant dimly lit ambiance, the red cieling lanterns is what gives it a nice touch. Good for celebratory occasions, but food seems to be hit or miss. Prices reflected accordingly to being a hotel restaurant and thus higher than the standard high street Chinese food. Part of the Dorsett hotel outside Shepard's bush Green. Four stars is for the appetizer and general ambiance. The Lychee mojito with fresh lychee was a refreshing drink, but somewhat pricey given it's non-alcoholic. The sesame prawn on toast was the highlight of the meal, the best of its kind. The hot & sour seafood soup was quite good, a brown color rather than the red style that you sometimes see. Not that much seafood though. This part seems to be a trend here. Because the Seafood fried rice with black truffle sauce didn't have much seafood at all. Very small pieces of chopped shrimp, that way you have no clue how many shrimp they have given you. Then only a few small pieces of white fish. The egg tasted freshly cooked. Overall tasty but I need more seafood than this. The black truffle was spread out specks in the rice, it was not a sauce as advertised. Not really what I pictured at all. The Singapore noodles looks very nicely presented and with 8-9 large shrimp for £10 seems like a bargain, but it's very oily and no spice at all. And then the dish wasn't warm enough. It's too bad because it's a very nice place for dinner and the staff are quite good too. Ended the meal with Green tea creme brulee. The green tea is like a paste and not too sweet, the way I like it. I'm getting more and more keen on green tea desserts, maybe its an acquired taste for some. This is some really good Chinese food. I would def recommend to anyone looking for Asian food in the area. The staff seem moody but it's very on point and the service generally is great. The sweet and sour chicken is amazing and really stands out as a winner. Garlic lobster is unreal and highly recommended. I'll start by saying that we arrived five minutes prior to opening so we didn't experience some of the poor/undermanned service mentioned in previous reviews. It was only us and one or two other families...as a result, I found the staff to be attentive and helpful. We ordered dim sum, sweet and sour chicken, pork belly, chicken lettuce wraps and egg fried rice. It was all delicious. The sweet and sour chicken had fresh lychee, pomegranate and melon instead of your typical pineapple. It was amazing. Everything else was fresh and what I would expect from this style food and restaurant. This restaurant was connected to the hotel we were staying at so we ended up ordering take out a few days later...(I got the sweet and sour chicken again). My friend and I started with the pork xiao long bao. They were lovely, but weren't boiling hot as I had anticipated. We then shared half a Peking duck. OMG so good. And plenty of food for two people (the waiter made out that we hadn't ordered enough food). They carve the duck at your table and serve it with the usual condiments and some steamed milk buns (to make burgers out of). My only negative points were that the pancakes were a little doughy and they bizarrely served the duck with some icing sugar (should really dip the skin in real sugar - it did not taste good with icing sugar). read more

It's got too many sharp edges and shiny surfaces to call it a firm favourite yet. It doesn't feel lived in and it hasn't developed any real character so far. A few dropped dishes maybe. An instance of spilt blood as the head chef chases his commis round the dining room with a bloody great cleaver. And the service is overworked and inattentive. Or it was when we went for Sunday afternoon dim sum anyway. I love the idea of rushed servers clattering around being rude and aggressive with a trolleyful of delights as the rest of us demand more, now. But the waiting service here doesn't come round with said trolley which is a shame. Maybe they consider themselves too smart for all that. There's certainly the space in this luxurious dining room in the Dorset Hotel on the almost trendy now Shepherd's Bush Green. You can see they've spent a bit on the place. But it's all just a bit too considered right now. Except the service, which as I said consists of aa small band of totally overworked waiters who keep their heads firmly down while greedy guts paw the air in the forlorn hope of some attention. Thankfully, the dim sum is fantastic. Beautifully made steam buns and dumplings. Noodles without the grease but with all the flavour. Accoutraments that have been carefully made and are a pleasure to dip tasty morsels into. We picked a number of things and all were good but the highlights were the venison buns and the chicken taro croquettes, the latter being outstanding enough to warrant a second order although we were already fully sated. Greed and good food. Dangerous combination. I love dim sum that looks good. This dim sum all looked great. Made with care and attention. All the better for destroying in one gulp. Isn't that the fun? So, roughen the edges, hire a couple more staff and this could be a hung over Sunday stalwart. On every other day it's an a la carte Chinese that looks to be of a high standard and a high price. Our bill was very reasonable indeed even with the overpriced pot of jasmine tea which was charged out by the cup. Definitely worth a pop for some good dim sum. Even if you will have to brave the Shepherd's Bush yummy mummies who think it's fine to let their kids run feral around the place. Where's that head chef with the cleaver? read more

I loved the Shanghai Xiao long bao considering I lived in china for 2 years this was amazing! we ordered the duck rolls and you can taste the freshness of the duck, we got mains and got sweet and sour chicken, pork belly and beef, along with jasmine rice and for drinks we got the tasty strawberry and vanilla iced tea! The beef just melts in your mouth with amazing flavours, the food was just amazing and I can't say how much I appreciated the good food, I think this might have been the best place I have visited! Great Chinese restaurant. I went for a dinner on a Friday night. The restaurant is quite big and spacious with very nice decoration. It was not very busy but had enough people to feel like a restaurant. The menu is not very long but had a great variety with unusual dishes. Many were having its signature Peking duck dishes, suppose it is its signature dish. We had smoked chicken, tufu in clay pot with duck and pork belly with buns. All were excellent with excellent services. Price is very reasonable as each dish portion is quite big. I really recommend it. Would love to try for lunch as its dimsum is supposed to be great. read more

A little out of our usual area, we decided to meet friends at this place. It's connected to a hotel which probably assures it a certain amount of business. It's reasonably new from what I can work out which maybe explains the manic waiter service, in particular the head waiter was rushing about looking a bit stressed.... it wasn't really that busy. Our order was taken after a while and the food all turned up at a reasonable time. In general all the food we had was pretty good. We ordered loads and between 4 it came to about £20 each which seemed reasonable. Not the best yum cha in the city bit a pretty good option! read more

I have walked past the Dorsett hotel hundreds of times and never guessed that behind the darkened glass windows was a large, interesting and beautifully laid out Chinese restaurant. Starters were hit and miss, wasabi prawns were good, if pricey. Ribs cane off the bone but a good portion. We went for the roast duck option. This came as a whole duck to the table and was hand-carved into perfect juicy slices at the table. Amazing. This was served with the usual pancakes, salads and soft buns too. The was super moist, yummy and delicious. I honestly could have eaten the whole plate to myself. They then take away the carcass of the duck and turn the rest of the meat into soup or fried rice. The fried rice was fine, but honestly? I wanted more pancakes and left to my own devices with that duck. We also tried the fried seabass which was tasty but a waste of the delicate flavour of seabass in my opinion and the seafood ho-fun lacked that wok flavour I crave. Other dishes were forgettable. The bill was extremely high, £30-40 per person. Saying that, it's hard to find high-end Chinese food in London in a smart setting so in that respect, this is good value. It would definitely impress a date or a client. Overall, I really liked it. The ambience is just right, smarter than your usual Chinese restaurant with the hotel as a beautiful entrance. An interesting place to say the least. Starting with its name I was curious about its origin so I did some research and learned that hikumen (Shanghainese "zakumen", lit. "Stone Warehouse Gate") is a traditional Shanghainese architectural style combining Western and Chinese elements which originated back in the 1860s. Shikumen is classified as one type of lilongresidences, sometimes translated as "lane houses" in English. Inside the decore and set up reflect those elements with interesting furnishings and fixtures featuring several seating areas which strangely enough seemed to flow quite well. The food was both interesting and flavorful. Fresh tasting and interestingly presented. Would gladly give this interesting restaurant a 5 star but unfortunately the some of waitstaff did not seem to be well informed. The first server we had not only did not understand what we were asking her (had to repeat several times), she also did not answer one of my questions and seemed to be uninterested in hearing my question (I ended up giving up asking questions at that point). Finally when we received our meals she put in an extra order of one of the foods. She then told us we requested 2 of the same food. We then explained that we did request 2 of Thea and but then changed the order and told we wanted something different. I have to say we were not surprised she messed out he order as she was challenging to communicate with and didn't really respond to our inquiries. I'm assuming she's from a foreign country and may be new so we didn't make a big deal about. Needless to say after that incident we were assigned a new server who did a better job but still, like the first, was not well versed on the specifics of the menu, however he did ask a coworker to get us an answer so I'll give him an A for effort on that. We did enjoy the deboning and portioning of my Roasted Chilean Seabass performed by our second server. Informative and very entertaining. A+ to him on that. All in all I'd definitely return as there were several other interesting options I would love to try. Their dim sum an tradition and specialty will be something I'll try next time I'm in London. We went there for a promotion (£30 for one roast duck+fried rice/soup), totally worth it because it's £15 for one person and we couldn't finish all. and you can get a pot of tea (with tea leaves not tea bags!) for less than £3, very friendly staff and classic decor. It's all about the Peking duck. Wow. I don't think I've ever had proper Peking duck before, but now I know what to expect (hope for?). There are plenty of other things you can order, but we went with duck and some vegetables, and that was all we needed. You'll start with some duck skin dipped in powdered sugar, which was pretty amazing - you almost didn't need the sugar, but it made it interesting. Then comes the actual duck with all the normal trimmings - cucumber, hoisin sauce, pancakes and some special "bau" that I've never had before. I thought were were done with the duck after that, but I was wrong - next came some duck soup and some duck with rice (normally you get one or the other but we ordered two ducks so we got some of each). Both were excellent, and we washed them down with the vegetables that we ordered. All in all, a pretty amazing dinner, although beware, you'll be full by the end of the meal! read more
