Very personable and friendly. The horses and barn are well taken care of. The trails are AMAZING, with beautiful scenery. The horses were well behaved. Our guide was a lot of fun. We were taken care of right away. The cost is about the same as everywhere else. My friend and I are experienced riders, we owned our own horses at one time. We were a little disappointed that we were not allowed to do anything more than a walk, even though the website says your allowed to canter. The guide said next time, because she wanted to see if we knew what we were doing. Afterwards, in the ring, we did a little trotting once around, and my guy did a couple canter strides. read more

This is a great place to board your horse. I've had my horse here for a little over two years and I'm very happy with the care she has received. Jackie and her employees love horses and take very good care of them. They know each of the horses so well. The horses are well fed. Jackie always watches the weather and if it's bad she will leave the horses in. Otherwise they go out every day except Sunday. The owners of the horses are very nice and we get along well. Krystal is the trail boss. She does a wonderful job with the people that rent horses for trail rides. read more

Of all of my horseback riding experience, trail riding at Shilo Ranch was the best experience. You start off in the arena to get to know your horse throughout the trail riding experience. This includes a lap around the arena and obstacles. Then, you and your guide ride through a trail with beautiful views with a lake. Then, you and your guide go into the lake with your horses but not too deep. The rest of the trail ride was fun and relaxing with amazing views. The trail ride concludes with some cowboy tricks. This includes sitting on your horse left and right sideways and backwards. Then, you dismount by sliding off the horse's rump. I was impressed that my horse, Sam, did not kick from behind when I dismounted. Finally, you learn to remove the saddle and pad, and lead your horse to the paddock. The overall experience personally was amazing. Krystal, my guide for the trail riding, was very excellent and knowledgeable. The ranch consisted of 52-60 horses that match your size and skill set. Beautiful place to trail ride in woods and next to lakes. Horses will take care of a novice rider and also respond to a more advanced riders cues. No tail to tail here! Horses are in wonderful condition and a very nice facility. I have been to every trail riding barn in a 70 mile radius of Chicago. This was the easily the the best. Not a place for lessons. The gentleman who answered the phone was flat out garbage. He is a rude, bitter, angry old man who hates life. My wife called to see if my daughter and her could go horseback riding and he was yelling at them over the phone. I don't know what the problem was with this guy, but maybe that's why business isn't exactly "booming." If I had someone like this working for me, he would be promoted to customer immediately. We will never think about giving this place a penny of our business. read more

I am also a former client and feel a need to speak up . The owner last year moved a man here from Nevada in July 2014. Since that time she has lost two trainers due to his constant badgering them for money that they supposedly owed Shilo. A new rule he put into play once he moved in. His goat was allowed to roam free and as far as that goes still is allowed to. The goat Willie gets into everyone tack , had on more than once defecated on my tack box. The man she moved in masquerades as a cowboy but actually once we goggled it worked at a amusement park. He used obscene foul language and gestures. He had a gentlemen Client who overheard his conversation and left the boarding facility. I texted the owner and her only reply was 'Sorry I wasn't there to witness everything'. The owner has a degree in business but never once followed up with me. Of course her manager saw him doing the obscene gesture and told her. I hope you take all this into consideration. On more than one occasion he has kicked a horse in the cannon bone supposedly for getting in his space. It really deserves less than one star. read more

Really unique horse riding experience. This is a farm with 60 horses, each with an amazing story. Wrangler Rich is a tell you how it is cowboy and if you're honest about your size and skill level he will match you up with the perfect horse. What's unique about riding at Shilo is that you also get to work with the horses. these are parade horses and they're able to go through an obstacle course appropriate for beginner and intermediate riders. We also got to watch them take off their saddles and we got to walk our horse out to the pasture. Two horse cookies later and you'll have a horse loving you like you've never been loved before. It was also really cool to watch our herd of horses trot out to the pasture together and roll on their backs. Our 1 hour of riding turned into an amazing family friendly 2 hour experience. Highly recommend bringing your picnic and some bottles of wine to hang out in the picnic area after your ride. We had a group of 8 people ranging from 7 years old to over 50 and everyone loved it. read more

PLEASE don't use this riding stable. We were visiting from out of state and went here for a trail ride a few weeks ago. The problem wasn't with the ride itself; it was after. The horses were very nice and even tempered, and the Jim, the trail guide, was pleasant. We enjoyed the ride around the lake. During the ride, I discovered that my horse Apache would limp when trotted. I walked him the rest of the way. When we returned, Jim had us come in the arena and told us to line up our horses--he wanted to do some cowboy tricks with us. My son's horse was being a bit stubborn, not wanting to listen to a young boy's instruction, so his horse was crooked/not lined up. At this time Jim's boss, who insists on being called 'Wrangler Rich," came into the arena and began to insult and berate Jim, telling him he is supposed to be in control of these horses and the situation, and why wasn't the horse lined up straight? He grabbed the horse's bridle and jerked him into line, all the while belittling and humiliating Jim. Jim then told us to sit sideways in our saddle, then backward, then sit behind the saddle. When we didn't do it fast enough, Rich snapped at us to do it, expecting this of all of us, including my stepmom who is in her 70s and has had hip replacement surgery. My dad and I both told her she didn't have to do it. Then he expected us to slide off the rumps of our horses next. My son was scared, and asked me if he had to do it--I told him no, he can get down the regular way, as I did. No matter how calm the horses appear, how smart is it to have riders with low to no experience sliding off the butt of a horse, making it an even higher chance of the rider being kicked if the horse spooks? We were giving the horses back when I told Rich that Apache was limping on his left front leg at a trot. He immediately became angry and told me he knows how to take care of his horses. When I told him I wasn't implying that he didn't know how to care for them, I was only wanting him to know his horse was limping, he said the horse had been kicked a few years ago in the chest near the front leg and had been limping since then. He then became even more angry, said he'd been working with horses for 60 years and knows what he's doing. I replied that I've been a veterinarian for 20 years, that I know what I'm talking about, and told him that it's my job to relay what I find wrong with an animal--what he chooses to do with the information is up to him. He then snarled at us that he has 60 horses to care for and can't take them to the vet for every little thing. My stepmom kindly suggested that maybe the next time the vet comes out for another reason he might take a look at Apache at no charge. He turned on her and snarled, "Don't you know anything! Nothing is for free!" Then he turned to me and said,"I'll bet YOU don't do vet work for free, do you?" I said, "Actually, I do quite a bit of vet work at no charge." He became angrier and stormed off to his office. I truly can't believe that any business owner would treat his horses, staff and customers in this way. Regarding that poor horse, he is not only putting that horse through pain every time he's on a trail ride, he's also putting inexperienced riders at risk on a lame horse who could potentially stumble, fall and throw his rider. That is inexcusable. And to treat your staff so badly and publicly humiliate them, then yell at your customers? So please, skip this stable and keep looking for a place where the animals and staff are treated with kindness and compassion. read more

We had the most amazing riding lesson ever!! In 1 hour our girls from 6 to 15 y/o learned so much: how to turn, go over obstacles, and even trotted a little. At the end they led the horse to the barn, took off the saddle, and brushed the horse. We love Shilo Ranch and will definitely be back!! read more

As a former client, I would stay far away from this place. The new guy in charge has insulted clients by telling them they were "fat" during a trail ride. Another couple stated this guy used obscene language and cussed at them during their trail ride. In both cases, they say they will never go back and have recommended to others to stay away. Very unprofessional. If you are interested in boarding a horse - just know that the arenas they say are available for you to use are NOT. We pulled out and are now in a much better place. read more

Wrangler Rich makes this a lifetime memory. Best horse ride we've ever had! He tells it the way it is with folks, which is great from our perspective (if you are easily slighted, be prepared), and he isn't afraid to share his thoughts. We learned things about horse riding that we've never learned before (how and where to hang on, on the back of the saddle, rather than the horn). We also did things we've never done horse riding before, like doing a horse obstacle course and standing on our horse, and this was all done in an extremely safe fashion. He also let a couple of us older, more mature folks get going a bit faster on our horses, but again, with him close by our side in a very safe fashion. Feel free to bring a picnic and beverages (beer and wine are allowed) for after the ride. They have a nice picnic area there. Best ride of the day is the last ride of the day, and then kick back with your 6 or 12 pack afterwards. He has great, well trained horses. We would highly recommend this for all ages 5 and up (we had a 6, 8, 11, and 13 year old and they all did great). read more

I am a 15 year old girl who has been boarding my horse at Shilo's Ranch facilities. For the last couple of months while I have been there to see my horse it has been very unpleasant for me and my mom. The guy who does lessons he's called Wrangler Rich. Is the most rudest person I have ever met. He would always try to make a fool out of me and my mom when we didn't do ANYTHING to him. Wrangler Rich tells us we owe him money because he rode our horse when we told him not to ride her. He took my brothers girlfriend to show her a "bite" but instead he went in the back to show her how he drinks and how the ladies love her trying to be all flirty with her. Then after he does that he tried to talk bad about her boyfriends mother and sister. Saying how they are her problem now and warning her about me saying I don't pay attention and listen. When the truth to that is I have always listen I blame him for my concussion he is a bad teacher. I would Advice everyone not to let him train your horse or kids! read more

Welcome to Shilo Ranch where you can ride with a real self proclaimed Wrangler from the world famous Ponderosa Ranch Theme Park! Here your trail guide will have just a few more times riding a horse than you, at least your horse will just follow the others. If that doesn't impress you I hope you have good balence for this next part before you get off you'll spin in the saddle and get off the back of the horse, yes right over his butt! That is if you can endure the abrasiveness of the "Wrangler" cussin fussin and offending everyone along the way. This barn is NOT a family place, its NOT somewhere to hang out. If you don't kiss ass you won't stay long. The people taking care of the horses are amatures at best, they do not drag the arena properly so it is usaually hard, that's if you even have enough room to use it while he ties horses up in the arena (so you get half an arena on average) that boarders pay for and when something is said about it he blows up, yells and throws a temper tantrum saying that he could have just closed it (boarding contract states otherwise). So if you want to go to a place where the rules don't matter, saftey rules are ignored, proper clothing and footwear is avoided, your kids will ride without helmets, the goat will eat your supplements, treats, and anything else you leave out and poop everywhere, and you want to be verbally abused then this is the place for you!!! This is not a boarding barn anymore and this is not a place for anyone who actually shows. And you better believe if you aren't on board with everything he does he will make your time there very difficult. From someone that was there for years AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAUGE!!!!! read more
