Southern Indian is my new adventure... Kingfish curries, Dosas and spicy Rasams. I've never been to the fiery tip of the subcontinent but I'm going to do my very best at recreating a culinary vacation by sampling London's best. From trustworthy sources... Shilpa is one if these. For 15 pounds I treated myself to a mini-banquet for one - a glass of house red, a generous bowl of rasam, a plate of plump lemon rice and a spiced-up raw mango and fish curry with a name so long and complicated that it should be published in Science magazine. With my banquet in place I busied myself staining the white linen linen tablecloth while checking out some DesiPop music videos with gorgeous young Indians partying in Miami for some reason. It was a great final meal of '09 even if it was by myself. Shilpa gives me an affordable flight to my new South Indian adventure. They compare well to other versions of this cuisine I've tried before, but not enough just yet to bring out the dark red stars. Maybe after my 2nd, 3rd, 4th or perhaps 12th return visit.

Shilpa's Indian food was savory, especially at 10pm after a long day! The food took a while, but the staff were helpful and friendly. There are a few steps/stairs to get into the restaurant and the staff generously offered to help with the wheelchair. It wasn't the most accessible because the tables are close together, but we were grateful for their help. The portions were on the smaller side and no one had leftovers.

This is the man here. Caused the restaurant to be silent by shouting.

Very good dosas... A must visit. Their sambhar is way better than the sagar down the road. I wish they were open the entire afternoon.

Good food. Short walk from Ravenscourt Park tube stop. I can see why this is a popular place!

The mains were absolute winners; prawns were plump and juicy in a tangy tomato sauce and the fish moilee was light, creamy, fruity and spicy.

There was another woman ordering lots of takeaway and some snacks to enjoy while she waited, and a few couples, but the place was quiet. As I looked over the menu, I saw that they also have garlic & onion free options. As I have a colleague who is always looking for such options, and I don't see that much in the states, I wondered if that's something that most places here advertise. I chose the saag paneer with naan and rice pilau. Saag paneer was tasty, a little runnier than I'm accustomed to, but still great flavor, and just what I needed. Rice was unimpressive - I wish I'd just eaten the saag with a spoon. Service was meh - not friendly, but not rude. Didn't really seem interested in serving me - just ticking boxes.

Aurora is right, they are very friendly and helpful, you are treated so nicely, you are even spoiled and then Sagar becomes the measuring stick of other restaurants, in terms of customer service. It mainly specialises in dishes from South India, like the dosa (rice pancakes type), other wonderful things about this place include the lunchtime special which is a real steal, at £4.50 for a big selection of dishes - it includes dosas, poppadoms and desserts! The place itself seems a bit cramped maybe a couple of tables too many, so it can be annoying when children are running around, so I would recommend going on a weekday. And another thing, £3.75 for a takeaway box is stupidly cheap so it must be taken advantage of immediately.
