We stayed in the Meadows cabin in January 2023. I wanted to love this place. Unfortunately the cons outweighed the pros, and I won't return. The positives: It's a beautiful setting with wooded trails which were fun to snowshoe. The Meadows cabin feels quite private. The heat worked well (it was actually too warm for us although we turned it way down), and there's a wood stove. The cabin has a couple of live potted plants, which was a nice touch. The overall aesthetic is "thrift store" which may be good or not so good, depending on your tastes. There are restaurants, grocery store, brewery, etc within a half hour drive if you need them. The negatives: First of all, I think it's important to know that all the photos on Shire in the Woods' website and on AirBnB are many years old and not at all representative of what the place looks like right now. Inside the Meadows cabin, the "king size day bed" is actually a twin size trundle bed with incredibly lousy mattresses, nearly threadbare sheets, and flat pillows. Everything was super dusty, the carpet (in a cabin, in the woods!) was filthy, there was crusted on food on several of the dishes. Basically, nothing was very clean. Curtains are torn. Not enough basic supplies (no coffee filters, for example). There's a teeny tiny shower, but navigating your way up into and down out of it, between the toilet and sink, is not safe. The shower curtain will stick to you. And then there's the notes. Ugh. Notes everywhere. My partner found them "quirky." I found them passive aggressive, sometimes rude. Finally, this is a so called hobby farm. They have horses and miniature horses (a positive!) in small pens with minimal shelter and lots of poop (negatives!). It wasn't a problem in January, but in the warmer months you are definitely going to encounter smells and insects, so bear that in mind if you're bothered by it.

I was so lucky to have stayed at this cute retreat place just after they opened. It was by far the…read more BEST most relaxing stay I have had in this type of setting. There was nothing left to be desired, I was in heaven and I didn't want to leave. Very inviting, clean and spacious. The craft room was AMAZING, I had everything I needed to do my projects with all my friends, with enough room for us to spread out our projects and more room to spare. They even have a separate entertainment room with a pool table and TV so we could still socialize with friends in the craft room . I can imagine so many other types of retreats I could have there not just for crafting too. I'm so excited to find such a wonderful place that is just over an hour away from the Twin Cities but still feel like I'm on a far away vacation. I'm already planning my next weekend with the ladies!

Overall, I really enjoyed this stay! You can't beat the location for the price. We stayed in Room 2…read moreand it was a way nicer than I expected based on the pictures. The main building also looks a lot less creepy than the photos (lol) but here's what you NEED to know if you're going to stay here: Parking is so, so convenient. We're talking 1 free pass right in front of the building with (paid) parking literally everywhere else if you're bringing a second vehicle. Location is 5 stars!!! Very walkable!! We walked up Superior Street to Duluth Trading Co, a very cute shop called Hucklebeary, Fitgers, and Portland Malt Shoppe, then all the way back to the inn. And do not miss Duluth's Best Bread!! It's so easy to venture around Canal Park and even the aquarium is walking distance (use the Slip bridge just past Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory). I loved the layout of the room. The bed and pillows were so comfy, and there was a cute bar seating set-up looking out the windows - although could be awkward if people are on the patio. There's a mini-fridge, microwave, and coffee maker with a pitcher-thing of water. You get two BOGO beer coupons from Fitgers as well, which is a fun treat. The only downside is that it's the last hotel/inn on the hotel row, right behind a public beach and lakefront walk, with a public bathroom adjacent to it in a small "park" (grassy area). This meant that unfortunately yes, the other reviews are true and there are some skeezy looking people specifically loitering in the bathroom area. My boyfriend and I sat on the front patio for breakfast, walked the lakefront walk during the day and evening, but felt that sticking to the inner road (Canal Park Drive) at night was best as a precaution. We kept the blinds closed in the room whenever we weren't there but never felt unsafe in the first floor room. Like any other city, just be aware of your surroundings especially at night and you'll be fine! There is a sauna (we didn't use it because it's outdoors on the side patio and just felt weird), cornhole, and a small fire pit with chairs looking out towards Superior. The building is old, so we heard our neighbors walking and talking upstairs. With the tv on it wasn't bad, plus the inn has "quiet hours" 10pm-8am that everyone surrounding us followed. You do have to be pretty self-sufficient to stay here. Everything is key code access, no physical keys or cards. There aren't staff or front desk or even common areas (besides the outdoor fun spaces) on-site so if you need help you have to call/text them between 8am-8pm. Our a/c didn't work the first night (and the windows don't open), and when I texted about the issue the following morning the issue was quickly taken up and solved within a few hours by the manager on duty. Thanks Kristin!! If it wasn't for the sweltering hot first night and the sketchy park people, definitely would have given this stay 5 stars!!
