The perfect room with the perfect view.

Mary and Brian have created heaven on earth. Gorgeous room, the best possible location, outstanding breakfasts, and attention to detail unequaled ... from the way the napkins are folded to bathroom products. I didn't want to ever leave.

This inn is beautiful in every sense of the word. It is intimate - 5 guest rooms. When I checked in the owner confirmed my dairy allergy - breakfast this morning was incredibly delicious - served on an outdoor patio overlooking Lake Superior. All guests ate at 1 seating - great food, great conversation, great way to start the day. We are in the Oscar Nelson suite - the most comfortable bed I have every slept on! Views of the Lake actually remind me of the ocean - waves lapping on the shore; gulls overhead, water for miles to the horizon. Oh, then look toward the inlet and huge cargo ships entering! Close to neat shopping and good restaurants. Owners have been very helpful in finding places of interest and directions. Sorry we are only staying 3 nights. Will definitely recommend to friends and we will be back

The house is built very traditionally with a foyer, dining & kitchen area, large living room and sitting room on the first floor and a large staircase to the upstairs where the rooms are located. When we visited, the only source of heat was from the fireplace which made things a tad chilly on the coldest nights, but was never unmanageable. The owners, Angie & Tim were welcoming and friendly. They were able to recommend nearby restaurants and were always very accommodating. The only thing we thought odd is that we stayed there over 2 years ago and never received any sort of follow up or further communication/invitation back! Perhaps this is their business model - not to overrun customers with marketing emails and promotions, however it was odd never to hear anything from them again.

Disappointed. Being #1 on Trip Advisor in Duluth and having…read morebeen to some outstanding B&B's in other cities, we had high expectations. Breakfast is our favorite meal of the day and our first one here was so sugary and starchy we actually went out for breakfast the second morning. The menu was French toast with blueberry sauce, harvest muffin so sugary it was inedible- and I am known for my sweet tooth!, and cheesy potatoes. Carb overload. Because our breakfast basket had been delivered to a different room and had someone else's name on it I assumed it was vegan or something. It was not. Angie said she typically serves vegetarian. I imagine it makes her job easier, but we are active young people and need a protein source. How about eggs??? In any form. I guess they occasionally do serve a quiche, so we just lost the roll of the dice. Phooey. On a positive note, we stayed in the Mayor's Chamber room which was as lovely as the photos. The tub was wonderful. The house is beautiful and the patio out front was bursting with amazing, pretty potted flowers. Also loved walking the neighborhood with it's huge historical homes. One last thing. I love to come into my room after it has been cleaned and the bed is made exactly as it was when we arrived. They did not do that. The sheet was tucked in, but none of the decorative pillows or coverlet had been put back on. Because the cleaning basket had been left in our room, maybe someone left before finishing? We'll never know. The housekeeping glitches and menu problems could be a fluke, hence the 3 stars instead of 2. We have experienced much better. p.s. I mentioned in the on-line registration form that it was our anniversary and they never mentioned it during our stay or did anything special. I read about all the extra nice things they did for couples in our room memory book. Another fluke or glitch?

Luckily, the Wolves Den Suite was available for a beautiful summer weekend in July, when occupancy on the lake is very high. Our sweet little dog was welcome for $15 a night. There was a nice view of the lake from all angles of our kitchenette suite. The bed was very soft and came with multiple pillows to suit various tastes. The AC was cold. I bet the fireplace is great in the winter. The shower was hot with complimentary glycerin soap and basic shampoo. The towels were soft. The place was very clean. We used our kitchen to cook up some delicious lake trout we bought at a local grocery store. There is a grill on site too. There is a fire pit that folks gather around in the evening and good cable TV for those who just want to space out. This inn is a retreat away from the world. It is not a high end chain hotel. It is not a spa. It is a relaxed, nature themed, lovingly-created getaway. The innkeepers, Julie and Butch, have grown this business for 30 years. Every stone, every tile, every peony plant, every detail is their creation and it is lovely. They are not afraid to show their faith and I think that is inspiring and brave in an increasingly politically correct world. I very much appreciated the complimentary breakfast. The omelet was delicious and the blueberry pancakes that say "God Loves You" were the best. After being here, I do feel a little more loved.

When checking in, my girlfriend and I were asked to select our preferred (gratis) omelet options, which are normal and "spicy." (More on this in a moment.) Given that IOGG is not technically a B&B, this option to have a free breakfast on the morning of our choosing was a charming and appreciated touch. The building itself is... Unique. Our room offered a legitimately fantastic view of the lake (as do most of the available rooms), and contained everything necessary for a comfortable, extended stay: cookware, dishes, kitchenette, gas fireplace, etc. Our bed was huge and quite comfortable, and fresh flowers greeted us on entry. Much of the visible trim and fixtures appeared to have been lovingly -- if somewhat inexpertly -- made by hand. There were a lot of decorative tiles and rocks in there, too. The overall vibe reminded me of the DIY hippie houses of my childhood, and while certainly clean, everything was sort of adorably ramshackle. Also, SO MANY LOONS. The couple that runs the place were helpful and pleasant, so I hesitate to share the following, but I feel it necessary. Basically, if you are of the evangelical Christian persuasion, the Inn On the Gitche Gumee will feel like home. If you are of any other (or no) persuasion, the Inn On the Gitche Gumee may feel a bit awkward. Various room decorations feature religious exhortations (as do the panca -- wait, I'm getting ahead of myself), and at one point, one of the owners referred to my girlfriend as my "wife." She's a great person, but we're not quite there yet, fella. I found this to be only mildly weird, but some may have stronger feelings on the issue than I do. We chose to eat our complimentary omelets on our final morning. Not top-shelf, but not bad. My "spicy" version wasn't spicy, but it came with a surprise "God loves you" pancake on the side. Although this brought my soul no closer to redemption, I still thought it was a nice bonus. On balance, I would recommend the Inn to those staying in the general Duluth area; the view is great, the rooms are odd but quite comfortable, and the price is not too inflated.

Breakfast in the morning was delicious. We had fruit and quiche both days, but the first day we had a green salad and mouse for dessert, and the second day we had cheesy potatoes and crème brûlée. (We had the gluten free vegetarian breakfasts). We both appreciate how Beth was able to accommodate our dietary restrictions and how well everything tasted. Yum! We booked the optional "Guided Wood-fired Sauna Experience" and REALLY enjoyed that, too. The Sauna was located at The Well in Hermantown, and we very much appreciated everything we learned from our tour guy (Adam?). We didn't realize there were so many benefits to the sauna. I can speak and offer opinions with particularity and knowledge about hospitality. Unfortunately, lately, service and attention to detail have declined significantly. Perhaps due to cutting corners and not giving travelers what they deserve. Remember, people look for that little corner that somehow makes them feel close to home. I was very surprised and delighted to find this place. I didn't expect such personalized, friendly, and professional service. When I checked into the condo, I was pleasantly surprised. Large, comfortable, well-appointed, and with very tasteful details in the decor. Very well thought out. The privacy of the unit (305B) is excellent. The kitchenware and utensils are of very high quality. But the most important thing is the cleanliness and hygiene. A very rare bird, or Rara Avis, to find. I hope they continue like this. Especially with the bedding and towels. I wish them the best. Just one detail. They should have at least one unit with a shower for disabled guests, not for me, but for other people. Thank you.

Beautifully set along the boardwalk and canal park commercial area, this location is perfect for Duluth visitors! The hotel and room was very clean but just was from a past era. I wouldn't say the bed was super comfy but it was adequate and the room was pretty quiet. Bathroom was spacious and uniquely designed. Elevator was super slow but stairs are easily accessible. Breakfast was the average marginal Hampton breakfast but served in a very nice windowed room with views of the water. I am a Hilton Honors Diamond member and received a complimentary room upgrade- room with view of the water. This was an appreciated perk but otherwise the front desk did not acknowledge my status even when checking in.

Initially we had…read morereserved a Queen Lakeview, but took advantage of a website offered upgrade to a King 1 Bedroom Suite (although that's not how it was labeled) with a Whirlpool (jetted tub) for an extra $40. The room labels for the upgrades to bid on did not match the labels of the rooms on the Hilton Canal Park webpage, but Michelle was very helpful in email correspondence in decoding the rooms being offered and the process of bidding on upgrades and the obligations involved. The King Suites are normally $100 more than the Queen Lakeviews for a Sunday. Oddly a Queen Partial View was also offered for bids at $80 more than our Queen Lakeview, although it would have been a downgrade. Construction was going on, which we were warned about on our stay last year. There was the expected smell of paint, commotion, and compromises on amenities because of this. You are paying a premium for the Canal Park location with this property, the event was a fifteen minute walk. Beautiful Lake Superior was about a hundred yards away across a service road, and we pretty much had the shoreline there to ourselves early Monday morning. The third floor room was clean, quiet, and adequately stocked which was expected for the price. They accommodated us with a rollaway bed for my girlfriend's daughter, though not right away. According to Business Travel News this property was built back in 1997 and last renovated 2013. It's definitely showing its age. There were several issues that likely won't be fixed with the current renovation, like dated slow elevators, which according to other reviewers has abruptly dropped with their groups inside. They have electronic checkin with the app, which is a big reason I stay with this chain, but the app didn't control the TV or the heating/cooling control, which their promo material advertises it to. I was told this was not going change with the renovation. The shower door wouldn't close all the way, so you had to be careful about water on the floor. Also when my girlfriend tried the jetted tub the hose leaked and sprayed water everywhere. The tiny laundry room had no washers (hopefully temporary with the renovation). The tiny workout room had just three of pieces of decades old equipment, a stairmaster, bike, and treadmill. It just fit me and her daughter, we had a couple people peek in and then leave while we were in there. The pool was nice. The breakfast, not in the normal dining area because of the construction, was typical generic fare to feed a lot of people cheaply despite TV promos showing a bagel shop bagel and sliced fresh fruit. I've yet to see either of these at any Hilton property. There wasn't much for snacks, you were mainly at the mercy of machines that ripped you off. I was overcharged several dollars for a bottle of Pepsi, which the evening desk person said he couldn't do anything about, but was refunded in cash the next morning by the day desk. When it happened the evening desk person mentioned the machine had outright stolen money from others without even giving drinks. When asked about the free water for 'Silver' membership, the only tangible benefit that level gets you, the evening desk girl pointed to a basket with some tiny bottles of warm Glacier Mint to apparently serve myself. This water perk is clearly just a token thing, but other Hiltons make more of an effort. The Hampton Duluth North gave us a couple of chilled large Aquafina's in a Hilton paper bag. We've stuck with the Hilton umbrella this last couple years after some bad experiences with Wyndham's, although the Hilton options for Duluth are fairly limited. A ten minute Uber ride away is the Hampton & Suites Duluth North/Mall Area, built in 2017, for two thirds the price of this one on any given night. We stayed there for the Haunted Ship event a month earlier, and 20 years newer does make a difference not to mention a more motivated staff. There are also countless other downtown Duluth hotels from competing chains and independents, like the new boutique property Force On Fifth, that likely would offer a comparable or better experience for less money. If you have to have a downtown Duluth Hilton and are willing to spend $200-$400 a night on a room depending on the day of the week, this property will just do.
