When my parents came to visit recently, we stopped by Emerhoff's Footwear to get me a new pair of sneakers (mine had holes in the heels) and also to find a solid pair of shoes for my upcoming internship. The service was amazing--from the wide selection and quality brands to the genuinely helpful staff. I was able to try on a bunch of different sneakers until I found the right pair. Then, when it came to the work shoes, they helped me test out insoles and different fits until we found something that worked perfectly. A special shoutout to Chloe--she went above and beyond. They ordered the work shoes in for me, and instead of making me pay a ridiculous shipping fee to get them to my dorm, Chloe personally delivered them. Amazing service and knowledge of their customer base, I am proud to say that they value quality and service in high regard. Huge thanks to both Chloe and the store owner for the top-notch service, not just during the purchase, but all the way through until the shoes were in my hands. I HIGHLY recommend Emerhoff's if you're in Ames or anywhere nearby. You won't be disappointed.

Given that it's a retail store, you would think they would have a professional attitude, or at least act like they are ready to help customers when they walk in. I have been there 4 or 5 times, and every time (including one time when I called the store) the staff seemed like they would rather be out on a smoke break. A couple times they were flat out rude. If it was always the same person helping me I would think maybe it was just that one person who was the problem. I have been helped by several different people, though, and it's always the same. This most recent experience was the last time I visit Brown's. If you need shoes, I recommend Emerhoff's. The people there are helpful and polite, they have a good selection for a town as small as Ames, and the prices are decent. There is also a Shoe Carnival that opened in Ames recently. They don't have as many higher quality shoes as Emerhoff's, but they have a lot to choose from and they offer good discounts.

About the only strange thing was the kids play area, it was filled with young guys - mid to late teens, and about 8-10 of them. They seemed to be hanging out in there, and when we came near, they made no attempt to move. An employee helped me to the car with some heavy stuff. In loading my purchases into the trunk, she ripped out the wires to the backup camera. I said immediately to her, "Hey, you just broke my backup camera." She said a quick, "Sorry" and trotted back to the store at closing time. I called in to the management immediately upon getting home. The video apparently told the managers which employee it was. I had to return twice to have two separate managers look at it. I was told that I had to get two estimates for repair--a bit of a hassle, but I did it. Both estimates were hundreds of dollars. The managers offered me a $50 gift certificate. I turned it down. I am shocked that this company has such poor customer service. I will probably have to file in small claims court.
