I attended Shoreline Community College full-time from the Autumn of 2008 through the Spring of 2010, earning my first college degree - an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree focused in mathematics and multicultural studies. My commencement was the week before my the commencement for my high school diploma from Shorewood High School, I was 17 years of age at both. It was cool to be able to earn credits for both high school and college as part of the Washington State Running Start program. While attending Shoreline Community College, I split my extracurricular activities - taking part in clubs here and sports through the high school. The student body was diverse, which I enjoyed. I still remember a particular group I was part of in a history/political science class where I was 16 years of age, another person was 24 years of age, and a third person was 40+ years of age with a 20 year old son... The 40+ year old even said they had a hard time taking me seriously because I was so young. I appreciated honesty and transparency like this from the students. My classes were across the board above average from my perspective and I can say there was not a bad experience in my two years here. When classes were close together temporally and spaced physically apart, I found I had to walk fast to make it to my next class on time. Parking was easy to find if I came early enough in the morning, otherwise it could be a bit of a wait. The bookstore was a magical place to me, where I could get textbooks, snacks, and other school supplies. Happy to have attended, and graduated from, Shoreline Community College. read more

ESL is free for residents what a great opportunity to learn English for anyone new to this country

Our son is Neurodiverse and one of the reasons we encouraged them to go to Shoreline community college was because of the "success coaches" program that is advertised on their website and was promoted through the Shorewood High School counselor. However we soon found out that after you look at the "success coaches" section which is STILL promoted on the SCC website and says "one way Shoreline community college encourages this is by providing free success coaching." Further, there are two different links to their success coaching section; however, when you click those links under the "success coaches" section at the very top it says "success coaching is currently not available." This is blatant misleading and false advertising for an essential service that they supposedly offer! The times they have contacted an advisor, they have only received help with selecting classes. Some students need more guidance and encouragement than simply telling them what math or LA class to take. read more

The administration in the biotechnology program is absent. I sent an inquiry in Sept 2021 and was asked to send in a copy of my transcripts, which I did. I then followed the registration process on the SCC website, and needed to meet with an advisor on what to do next due to having received my undergraduate degree over 9 years ago. I spoke to two advisors who let me know that someone within the biotech program would have to get back to me, and no one did. Eventually, the dean responded and never got back to me on assisting me - understandable since deans are busy. I eventually heard back from a Biotech Navigator in January 2022 who said they would get back to me to "schedule a time to talk", but they never did either. Now, I understand that COVID may have brought on staffing issues, but it should not take TWO QUARTERS for an advisor from the program to respond to a registered student. If there are such staffing issues that enrolled students can't receive advising on what classes to take or retake, or ask questions about the program, then an inquiry form should not be available on the biotechnology website. It is misleading. I also spoke to one of the general advisors who was not even sure if one of the faculty members of the biotech program was still an employee because they also did not respond to them either. If a school advisor AND student is in need of any assistance from the program, the lack of response from the biotech program is a red flag. As a person who has previously received help from DRS at the UW, I would need to meet with advisors prior to registering for classes so I could obtain appropriate accommodations for my classes. I also do not recommend the biotechnology program if you have a disability because they are unable to respond to basic inquiries from the start. I was hoping to broaden my skills in the laboratory with the biotech certificate, but, with the lack of response from the biotech department, I don't recommend this as a career stepping stone, but a completely unprofessional program. The general ed advisors from SCC have been great, and one also called and apologized on behalf of the school because it was extremely unprofessional of no one responding to me after multiple, courteous follow up e-mails over the period of two quarters to a registered student. Other programs in the region that can provide lab related degrees are Clover Park or the University of Washington. One star, because the campus is nice. read more

This review is for the Shoreline Community College Theater only. My friend was in a production that was at the Shoreline Community College Theater, so I decided to attend one of her shows. I had a wonderful time, and most of all, it was so encouraging and cool to see the community support this local production at a small college theater. I don't often trek to Shoreline, but the Shoreline Community College Theater was easy to find. In fact, once you pull into the main entrance of the SCC campus, there is a sign that directs you specifically to the theater. Not only was it easy to navigate around, but there was a ton of free parking right outside the theater building. The theater is small, with a lobby area and two doors that lead into the theater. If you ever see a show here - note that there are no bad seats in the house, even the back row had great views of the main stage. Below the main stage is an orchestra pit. It does get hot in the theater and in the lobby, with so many people. The air conditioning isn't the best, as it is an older building. The women's restroom only had three stalls, so you can imagine the line that quickly formed at intermission. There was a cash bar where you were allowed to bring drinks and food in the theater, which was nice. You can also bring your own flowers for your actor friend; although, they were selling flower grams. Glad that Shoreline Community College has a theater for the local community. My dreams and ambitions were suddenly dashed when I became the target for an instructors discrimination, racism bigotry and retaliation. One day, when I was in class, I noticed the instructor TONY HYUN, a Sys-asian male; made some extremely discouraging remarks pertaining to my weight class. He stated that he did have gowns in my size and hasn't had someone my size in his class in years. He then forcefully tried to make me try on a gown that was 2 sizes too small in front of a room full of peers When I refused to do so his attitude changed towards me drastically changed. He then threatened to dock me participation points. Because he didn't have the materials available for me to participate in the in class activity, I obviously felt embarrassed, humiliated and singled out Especially because Tony had been privy to my physical challenges and disability. I would not be able to get the gown on because of physical restraints that I've had with my body and injury. But he did not care about that. He continued to press the issue and make comments in regards to my size. In Washington State, being overweight is a protected class. And he freely discriminated against myself. As well as other women within the classroom.. . The next day, he made some loose remarks in regard to Muslims and head wraps. He stated that in the industry of biotechnology Muslims and other relions with head wraps will not make it to a ISO zone not because their headwraps are considered a. contamination factor and breed bacteria so they would never be in a ISO room. A student who identified as muslim and was wearing a head wrap was a Visibly agitated by his comments, After he made his student who identified as Muslim, spoke up and said. How does he know if they don't have head wraps that are special for those types of situations? Period I've been picking back off of her comments and said they could be a company out there that make sanitary had wraps for industries like this because a lot of these biomanic factoring industries are located in the Middle East where there are a lot of Muslim identifying cultures. Tony, being the self-absorbed pompous bigot that he is, he did not like that we challenged his assumptions. But this is a stem college course. He would sit there in class for hours. Talking about himself and his experiences in any time. We challenged his instructure, he would become physically agitated and disgruntable. That same day I can see that Tony carrying that bone with him after being challenged by students. during the activity he reverted his anger to me, approached in an aggressive manner asking me was I going to participate in the activity today? No, I was not because he still does not have the equipment. That would make the activity accessible and inclusive he then said very rudely that it's hard to find my size that will fit someone with my body type. My peers around me, especially the females, knew that he was targeting me, and what he said was extremely discriminatory. When myself and my peers breaked to use the restroom. 2 of the female students in the class came to me and said that what he was doing is that I should report it. I went home that night and I could not sleep. I was ill from being treated like this. I could not believe that it was happening to me. I hear about this happening to other people. I went to the program coordinator to report it. She connected me to the Dean of staff.I filed a report they opened up a fake investigation which only led to the instructor retaliating against me purposefully excluding me from activities. I was so discouraged that I had to withdraw from the program. After they concluded their false investigation without interviewing me, they continued to allow Tony to instruct there. This proves students are not protected SCC. especially if you are disabled and blk. read more

I came in to take a test and since I walked in the door they made it clear it wasn't going to happen. For starters, I scheduled this exam a week in advance and wasn't on roster. Who dropped the ball, I don't care. Danika, the program manager, kept denying any attempt for me to test even after I had her speak to a rep at Pearson. It did not look that busy. If Shoreline Community College's testing center is to help students take a test, they fail at that. A lot of these college workers boast to their friends that they work in a college as if denying students from testing is something that requires advanced intelligence. Poorest rating, horrible job, terrible service. They don't know what their doing or what their function is. A testing service is denying people from testing. Great job! read more

The financial aid office doesn't even respond to students who are wondering what is going on with their financial aid - classes started a few weeks ago & financial aid has been delayed with no answer or communication at all from the school - it's the most ridiculous BS I've ever witnessed- is there even anyone working in the financial aid office there? I don't think there is. Good thing I'm in school & have no idea what is going on with aid this summer- I wouldn't of signed up for classes if I had known it would be delayed without any information on what is going on. SCC seems to only care about recruiting international students and why in the world are you posting all over to sign up for classes & claiming there is money available for school right now when that's a lie? This is a great school. I just wrote a SUPER long amazing yelp in support of the amazing instructors and yelp deleted it when I uploaded the photo. I don't want to write it again but just know that you can be anything and do anything you want in life. This school will help you realize your dreams. The FA department is really helpful. I'm on financial aid and I've never had any issues. The instructors are amazing (except the spanish teacher who is very lazy) and inspirational. Try it out, you won't regret it. read more

Went to this school and ended up having to drop out due to the fact this school, security and police did nothing when I reported me being harassed, after being ran over by a car over a parking space, security was called and the guy said I called. Him the N word which I didn't, and the security took his side and gave away the parking spot I circled 30 min for....due to the fact the school is overcrowded..I was then threatened and was followed, after I got out of class, they were right there, I asked my friend to walk with me because I was being followed, they start at each other my friend telling them to pick on someone their own gender, and they're threatening to call their sisters to beat me, I run to the police across the street and tell him I need help and told him everything that happened that day, he does nothing except go talk to them and told them to drive away. The next day they find my friend and followed him to the bathroom, smashed his head open and stole his backpack with all his things, he ran after him all bloody and for some reason security decides to tackle my friend, ultimately letting them get away with his computer, homework, and $$$ worth of textbook. Never to be retrieved...I ended up dropping out because security and the school told me there was nothing they can do, they weren't going to kick them off the property or school, when I paid out of pocket for that quarter and was forced to drop out due to my safety, the school refused to give me a refund and told me that it was my choice, my friend who got his head cracked open, had to get over 10 stitches, failed that quarter because security let the perps get away with $$$$$ computer with all his work on it.....I went to security and the head of the campus numerous times and never received so much as even an apology. This was the reason I left this school, the moral and compass of this establishment, and how they handled my life being threatened, after being ran over by a car, followed, then on top of that thousands of dollars lost, I wish I told this story sooner and let the people know how much this establishment cares about your safety and your education. read more

Yeah , I can see the chance that things happen but my first quarter here so far has been quite nice and just what I expected nothing more nothing less. Now bear in mind that I've been attending classes at EDCC for the past seven quarters and enjoyed the time I spent there in fact I'd recommend it as a millennial myself I find the tutoring services helpful and the resources as well. The things that they do have that EDCC didn't have was food trucks , a shelter for smokers . The teachers that I have are quite favorable to me and I really don't have that major of an issue with either one. But hey bear in mind it's my first quarter here and most likely not my last thanks goodbye have a nice day and I hope you find something else better to do with your day viewer. This is a review for their financial aid office. I haven't actually gotten the apparent privilege of attending their school due to how astoundingly unhelpful they've been. It's been my dream to go to college, but I never thought I would be able to afford it without accruing debt. I decided to start off in CC so I could pay my tuition in full with financial aid, and have more time to finance my years at university. I have not been in school for more than 4 years, and was very eager to go back. I submitted all required forms for financial aid in May. I kept checking back with the financial aid office every month, but by August I still had not received my award letter and was still "pending". This was very stressful for me, yet every interaction I had with the staff was one of indifference. They just kept telling me that it only takes a few weeks to process, and it should be done any day now. For months, without ever realizing how little this meant or empathizing with my situation. I finally received a follow-up email two weeks before the beginning of the quarter I was registered for - TWO WEEKS - informing me that my file was now considered incomplete, and I would need my parents to sign (both of whom I haven't seen or spoken to in over 3 years and have no way of contacting, because you know, I've been financially independent for those 3 years). I was also curtly informed that my classes would not be held. So basically, you don't get to start school on time - too bad, not our problem, we don't care! I emailed back explaining my situation, and still haven't received a response as of today, more than a week later. For one thing, it is literally impossible to get a human being on the phone here. It's not even an option afforded to you. You have the option to leave a message which may or may not be returned, or go down to the financial aid office in person. If you do the latter, don't be surprised if you're told the only person who can help you isn't in (during regular business hours) and the only way to contact them is via email. They will take their sweet time responding to your email, at least a week - that is, if they respond at all. It has been over a week since I returned the last email, and I still haven't gotten a response. At this point, it's so clear to me that the staff here doesn't care about me or my situation that I'm not sure I'll even get a reply. I'm so beyond frustrated. Not only has the experience I've been given been unprofessional and callous, it's frankly lacked any empathy or compassion - which should be inherent in all human interactions. I was so excited to begin school this fall, and now not only will I not be able to, but I don't feel like Shoreline even wants me as a student, after such a cold welcome. It's a terrible feeling to have, and reminiscent of the experiences that caused me to leave school in the first place. I will add that all my interactions with actual instructors has been a positive one. They return emails by the next business day (even when school is not in session), and have generally been helpful and supportive. But I won't get to have any of them as teachers or advisors, because I don't get to go to school now, and the financial aid office seems entirely uninterested in helping. So if you depend on financial aid to attend classes, I don't recommend this school. They don't care about you and they will make that clear. read more

Once upon a time, I had a stick up my butt and scoffed at the idea of attending a community college. This *may* be attributed to the fact that I came from a priviledged, mostly white Catholic high school and anything but a university was out of the question. So for my freshman year I attended Central Washington University (CWU). Under unforseen circumstances, I ended up at Shoreline CC and had a great and reasonably priced experience. During my time at Shoreline, I obtained an Associate's in Art and took many of my science pre-requisites. And boy do I have to say, some of those chemistry and biology classes are rough... but I feel very prepared to finish my Bachelor's in Biology. The labs here are pretty legit and was able to dissect various types of animal specimens (for animal bio & human anatomy), as well as perform some cool chemistry labs. Since I can only really vouch for the science program-- the teachers were mostly dedicated, engaging, and helpful. The chemistry here was definitely more intensive than what I experienced at CWU (okay, don't make fun. I know CWU may seem not exactly intellectual, but there were some great teachers!), which is to be expected since it's prepping for students to transfer to UW. Some general highlights: - The people at the counseling office rock!! Free academic and personal counseling for students, booyah. I highly recommend Matt :) - If you used to play sports in high school, consider joining one of the sports teams. It can be intimidating, but I've seen a 40 year old woman on the North Seattle's women's basketball team. And I know for a fact that they're always looking for new tennis players (hopefully it's not cut soon!). - If that doesn't sound appealing, then they have intramurals and free exercise classes. - PUB (Pagoda Union Building) aka the main cafeteria/bookstore is pretty nice and spacious. Be sure to make friends with the cafeteria guys -- P.S. They make legit $3 breakfast burritos that fill you up for hours. Easily the best food deal there. Oh Shoreline, I miss you already! Just FYI-- Shoreline has the #1 Washington CC science program. (Suck it, Bellevue!) Goooo Dolphins! read more

This school just gets worse and worse. They never accepted my financial aid because I "hadn't passed enough of my classes" because I had dropped a few over the '10-'11 year but they didn't take into consideration that I had re-taken most of the classes I had dropped and passed them. They also didn't take into consideration that I had valid medical issues that forced me to drop the classes, and I had documentation to prove it. Oh, and get this - Stafford Loans aren't accepted at Shoreline. How backwards is that? I checked into getting a loan since they denied my financial aid and North Seattle was listed on the federal loan website (Ginnie Mae) but Shoreline wasn't! I won't be returning here! read more

I took a couple classes here several years ago for my pre-reqs. I didn't want to spend private school tuition for my electives so I took a couple summer courses here and banged them out for a fraction of the cost. I think this was a good decision. I don't know about the competency of the admissions office or what the facilities are like too much because all I did was park in the guest lot, go to class, and leave. I did use the library to study occasionally but never went into the cafeteria or other buildings. I took a film class here and a 1000 level econ class. Both teachers were very good. There were a few screw offs in the film class but hey- I was at a community college in the summer, what can you expect? Based on my brief experience I thought the quality of the teachers was excellent and the course work was interesting and challenging. Honestly I think I got just as much out of the classes as I would have if I spent 5x that amount on tuition at my regular university. The buildings were very dated but I don't think that reflects what kind of education you could get from attending the college. read more

I'm an international student majoring in business, and I like it here! Here is SCC to me in a (lengthy) nutshell, which I wish I had known before so I wasn't so clueless on my first day... First off, the buildings are cool. They're brick cottage-looking buildings arranged like a resort, with well-kept trees and such. If you've ever been to other community colleges nearby, you'll appreciate this surrounding on a rough school day. Areas surrounding the school are generally safe, even at night. Bookstore sells chips more than books, and you're probably better off buying books on Amazon for the price. The bookstore also has surprisingly random stuffs that might help you on random situations - I have bought an eye drop, stamps, and bobby pins there. Clean restrooms everywhere, cozy library, moderate gym, cool laboratories, and a place called PUB where students eat, hang out and have club meetings. Cafeteria has ok food, but if you're ever bored of it, take the school's shuttle (free) that goes back and forth to Central Market down the street and eat there. Parking can be awful in peak hours but there's always the bus option... There are buses from school that goes straight to Downtown Seattle, Chinatown, Northgate Transit Centre, Aurora Transit Centre (to go north). Classes are pretty standard and bearable. Professors are mostly nice if you are, and since there are many intl students, they're also quite understanding of people whose first languages are not english. There are active clubs on campus that are worth joining. And if you have problems with your class, go to the tutoring office and have a tutor for free. Sidenote: heard UW prefers Shoreline CC transfers over other seattle cc because of our slightly more rigorous classes, whoohoo! (Correct me if I'm wrong though) Speaking of my own people... :) Intl students are a small percentage of people who are enrolled in the college. They're one of the most hardworking group of students I've seen, which might explain why there seem to be so many of them around in school. I hope you guys will be more understanding too of why intl students speak in their own language most of the time. Put it this way; if you're an english-speaking American living in China with a fellow english-speaking friend, I highly doubt you and your friend will speak to each other in Chinese. And most of intl students are still adjusting to the language and customs in America. Nicely remind us if we do anything wrong! Lastly, if any of you must know, Shoreline has an excellent International Education office. The IE people are the academic advisors, peer mentors, and staffs who are there to help you with education plans and many school-related things. They are the BEST, which makes Shoreline a great place to study for fresh-off-boat intl students. Intl students, do NOT underestimate this quality as you'll see how useful a superb IE is going to be when you enroll. All in all, this is a mash-up of the things I found out about Shoreline CC that might be useful for prospective students. Beautiful campus. That's the single best thing about it. Some of the professors are great. Some of them just obvious don't care and in a few cases are downright NASTY to students. The administration talks a lot about valuing "diversity" but won't tolerate any speakers or events that are even slightly right leaning. They will however allow speakers on campus who advocate violence as a response to "hate speech" (defined of course by the speaker). The financial aid department is a nightmare and doesn't seem to care about helping local students. All in all I regret not only spending my tuition dollars here but the fact that my taxes go to subsidize this school. read more

I guess I'll give this place 4 stars considering I've been going here since I graduated in 2008, (mostly due to circumstances), but overall I have really enjoyed my experience here at Shoreline and I am continuing to do so. The PUB is a great place to go and study, very useful. I wouldn't suggest eating here unless its RedBull and fruit parfaits unless you want to dish your cash out on not-so-great meals. The classes are good, professors are great as well, but lets get to the issue...parking. Finding parking here is like trying to find the fountain of youth. You can sit there for 30 mins + trying to find a spot and STILL not find one. It's horrible especially if you may think getting there an hour early is a smart choice, wrong-o. You have to park your car in the middle of a lane and claim your spot by sitting there, waiting and waiting...HOPING someone will leave eventually.... Merp. read more

I have been going to Shoreline for more than 2 years and I love it there. Even though the college is undergoing financial woes and they are building a student center (will be completed next month) it is hella worth it. Every class that i've had has been challenging and thought-provoking. Unlike some drones that attend schools like UW and WWU in their first 2 years of college, Shoreline makes it imperative that you take an active role in learning. I originally went there because the financial aid is good and the advisers actually know what they are doing (unlike Seattle Central), but now I can't imagine going anywhere else for my associate's degree. Just some advice: If you take any math class try to take it with Sarah Leyden. She is the best professor I've ever had. Most instructors here are top-notch; some have law degrees, some have doctorates, and some have many years of industry experience. They are at Shoreline because they WANT to teach, not to do research or to be on some kind of academic pedestal. read more

I have been expanding my brain at this college for the past year and a half and must say I am utterly impressed with the quality of the teaching staff, and the campus is really easy to navigate. The lecturers - many of which teach at the UW - really are devoted to seeing that you get the education you are paying for. Actually, they are giving you much more than what you are paying for if you use UW as a comparison. Don't think I don't hear the condemnation from UW groupies in comparing the two, but all I have to say to you is "why don't you just come down from your academic pedestal and smell the roses". Now stop interupting I am trying to finish this review....Now, if you want a college experience that is easy then you better give this place a miss - even the art classes here are tough. But if you are looking for a solid education while mixing with people from all walks in life, then what are you waiting for. Go ahead and jump on the Shoreline bandwagon. The only negatives would have to be that it isn't located right next door to my house so I could walk to college. But even that speaks volumes in that I am willing to drive from Madison Park to Shoreline during peak hour traffic for such a great learning experience. read more

I LOVE SCC!!! Went here back in 2009 during my senior year of high school (did running start). And This fall will be my 3rd year. I've been back and forth with a degree, from nursing, to business, to music, until I figured out that I want to go into Media and Communications! :D But I haven't had to much trouble signing up for classes, My fin aid goes through very easily, the teachers are great! The only thing is that the campus isn't to diverse. Most of the people there are Asian, either born her or exchange students (which I think is great) It's just after taking a class about cross difference and doing a project about the diversity on campus, Our class found out, there isn't much. But other then that, the school is great! Teachers are very nice, and helpful. I've had a great time here, and plan to graduate this spring! :D read more

I just want these employees to speak to me with some sort of decency rather than making me feel like my questions are a burden. Beware of attending classes here. They will charge you more for tuition once classes start claiming their budget was lowered. They will charge more for the class after payment was made and classes had already started. They stick you with a balance and "claim" to mail you a bill and once you never get such statement in the mail, they will send you to collections and never notify you. Even if they have your phone number and email address. Beware school is a scam. read more

After receiving my bachelor's degree 8 years ago, I decided in my late 20s to go back to school to become a nurse practitioner. It was much cheaper, easier, and convenient since I work full-time to do my pre-reqs at Shoreline, so I gave it a shot. I was skeptical of the quality of education delivered from a community college. Back to school and this is what I think about SCC... It's a wonderful school. I say this because anyone is welcome to take their General Eds (pre-reqs.. what have you) here as oppose to paying top $ for universities like UW. The classes are way smaller AND anyone has a better chance to get help from their instructors-- true story. For a junior college, it's an excellent school especially if anyone's planning to get into the medical field. I have spent some two years plus at this school and have finished an Associate here as well. They offer wide range of courses for specific majors and other courses to complete to be able to transfer credits to major Universities of your choice. Excellent advisers but of course, by appointments only. The key is to make appointments in person for advisers so you can get all your answers to anything pertinent to your goals for a career choice. Have a list of things to do, make specific notes for your plan before coming here and it'll save you plenty of time. Parking can be challenging here but be very mindful where you park or you will get a citation. SCC might as well be a true college. It's a tough school and by that, their classes are not easy to pass. They will challenge you and your patience. For those of you who'd been a student here, you know what I'm talking about. The professors are awesome, the programs are unrivaled (for community colleges), and the academics are great. It was tough when they didn't have any food service, but the new cafeteria is really nice and offers some pretty good sandwiches. The professors are also just incredibly amazing and they science classes are excellent. One negative, however, is the older woman with brown hair who works behind the transcript / information desk. She has always been INCREDIBLY rude to me whenever I have attempted to get transcripts. She throws a fit about any sort of confusion over filling out the paper and tried to fight with me regarding getting my transcript actually mailed (instead of sent electronically) to a place. I don't know why she hates her life and job so much she has to take it out on everyone else, but I'd avoid her like the plague when attempting to get something done. The financial aid office is also hit and miss. One woman is incredibly knowledgeable and very friendly and nice. She has the shorter, darker hair. Very great. I always tried to go to her because she was so helpful and will help you solve your problems. The other people, not so much. Overall, though, in terms of the community college experience, I think you don't get a better one than this. The academics will prepare you for university or the top-rated programs (nursing especially) will prepare you for a successful career. read more

If you like school libraries go to Shoreline, they have a quiet area but everyone always talks (form of protest I guess). The upstairs is for people with cell phones and other devices and extra studying room. There have even been rehearsals in the building. Even though there's all that activity going on students are still able to study and get their work done. The place is full of life and packed with students. Shoreline is an ok school and the advisors and registration are super helpful but I am confused about something that happened in math class: During my last quarter for our final project I brought in a list containing female mathematicians and mathematicians from other countries and cultures. A group member picked a mathematician and I sent a message to our professor because he wanted to make sure groups didn't repeat mathematicians (still happened the day of the presentation) and we were ready to go. The day of the presentation we were worried that the group members that were presenting wouldn't show (they were rarely in class) they were late but began practicing what they would say using our typed essay. When the presenters went up the class acted like Osama Bin Laden had risen from the grave because our presentation was on Jamshid al-Kashi, here is a Britannica article on the mathematician http://www.britannica.com/biography/al-Kashi Even the group member that chose the mathematician turned and asked if that's who we picked and I looked right at her and said yes. I thought that maybe because I didn't write a script for the presenters that was the problem, that struggling through the presentation was the problem, but no it's not. The problem might have been that a few weeks before ISIS was causing destruction and hurt and it might be insensitive to feature a mathematician from Persia, but I don't understand what a 15th century mathematician has to do with modern conflicts. Did he do something terrible and horrific I'm not aware of? And One time the Muslim Culture Club posters that were in the library were vandalized with hurtful comments. And The LGBT Film Festival posters were vandalized too. So if doing a group activity (and there will be a lot of those, don't remember doing so many school group activities a few years ago) make sure the historical figures are American or European. By the student's mentality German and Russian mathematicians should be unacceptable but they're not, they are totally acceptable (I believe they are totally acceptable mathematicians I'm simply trying to make a point about the students). I am still so confused. Instead of the mandatory communication class Shoreline has mandatory multicultural classes with descriptions in the course catalog like "learn how to communicate with people from other cultures," I come from a multicultural family and find that wording offensive. I understand that there are some hand symbols and phrasing that might be misinterpreted but if college students have to be taught how to behave and interact in the outside world then this school has a lot more problems than it originally thought. Speaking of learning to interact in the outside world, one time I was in class and got crap smell all over my arms from the desk! I rushed out of the classroom to try to clean it off and spent the night and the morning cleaning, I even missed the midterm! I think a student in the previous art history class might be responsible but that class seemed pretty advanced, they were doing three page art reviews. Learning how to wipe and clean properly is one of the skills human beings should know by the time they reach college. There was another issue with a group activity in another class where a group member did something that furthered my distrust of human beings to the point that when I go back to school I will have to inform all my professors that I cannot work in groups, and yes the teacher asked me to come to his office and that went nowhere. I don't know if my experience with Washington schools is personal (I have reviews for other schools on Yelp) but I would tell future college students to stay away from Washington. I feel like the only stable person. I don't even go out much anymore because who knows what Alice in Wonderland craziness I'll run into. read more

This is my review for the beginning of my first fall quarter here at Shoreline and things are going good so far. Classes have instructors that are really involved with the education of the students and the classes are interesting enough to keep everyone doing and participating in the work. I am currently in a Communications class MSC 105 with Ms. Sanchez and she is really nice and accommodating to the schedules of students. I am also in Life Planing with Mrs. Pearson and. That is also a very enjoyable class because she is laid back and gives homework that is doable realistically. Then finally the final class that I have is Printmaking 205 with Mrs. Niblack and that too is a good class. The classrooms are of small size about 30 people in a given class. There are water fountains all over the building. The enrollment and student services are very helpful when it comes to answering your questions on classes to take and paying for them and stuff like that. The campus is nice and located in a good area. Parking can be a problem and the parking in the Greenwood parking lot is especially bad because it is just gravel mostly and there are tons of pot holes and it is bad if your car is low. The building themselves are older but thy have remodeled a majority of them. Also the automotive program at Shoreline is the best in the state with the Toyota Program and other manufactures receiving millions of dollars in grants from the big companies. The campus has a lot of trees and natural plantation, walkways are easy to navigate. Overall a good school or affordable education for the masses and there are degrees there that are four year degrees so you don't have to transfer. I will update the review accordingly for the duration of my stay at shoreline and will add to it on a later date. read more

yeah, um, GET YOUR ACT TO-GETH-ER and build us that effing cafeteria lounge! or at LEAST provide us with an espresso stand that doesn't take half an hour to get a bloody latte from, or another source for lunch besides the taco bus (it's tasty and all, but eating Mexican food every day leads to undesirable results). i suppose there are vending machines in that cramped study lounge area by the bookstore, but nothing healthy-ish. And that stupid coffee vending machine spat out BROWN WATER instead of coffee or hot chocolate after eating my dollar. i go on Yelp to review food, not the quality of colleges, so that's the part of SCC i'm going to touch upon. but i will say THIS about Shoreline CC that makes it a more awesome community college: the drama prof! It's a good school. From what I hear from my classmates it is a lot better than a lot of other community colleges around here.

from reading reviews it seems like at one time a few years ago this was a good school to attend, especially if you were going to classes not on-line classes. however the few negative reviews i read were some what of the experience i had this winter quarter already. especially the one where ch states some of the teachers are nasty to the students. i found this to be true. i am an older adult, i have many years in the work force and i am no dummy. i happen to know when i am being bullied and antagonized instead of being taught and helped, which by the way, you teachers is what you signed up for! if you do not like your job do something else like i was trying to do by taking the on-line classes at your horrific school. i am giving the school a one star if i could give none i would. older career changers with any responsibilites at all beware of the lies and deceit. the e-learing dept. should in fact give you a smaple for you to practice way ahead of time so you get famailar with how they teach. they also need you to be aware that the teachers pretty much insist that you buy ebooks which is fine as long as a person is prepared. elearing dept is a failure in that way. the other issue for older learners is the inflexibilty of the teachers. most older adults are not stupid can catch up and do not need disipline and antagonistic remarks. i can go on and on but i have already wasted precious time and will take my cash and go where i am valued. read more

This is a review of the BFET Program of Shoreline Community College, and more specifically about the BFET Programs Program Specialist, Savena Garrett. As a new student beginning at this college, I want to distinguish this Shoreline Community College staff member, Savena Garrett, as someone who goes above and beyond in her assistance to students while clearly having compassion for and the genuine best interest of the students she works with. I met with Savena during orientation for the BFET Program, a program in high demand that assists students with economic barriers to pursue their education a couple of weeks ago. She was engaging, enthusiastic, solution focused and committed to assisting me in identifying steps necessary to ensure my success at the college and beyond. She was compassionate, resourceful and genuinely listened to me, in spite of the room full of students she had to meet with in the allotted time that day. Last week I received a call from Savena's assistant who said Savena was out of the office but had asked that she call me to follow up and see how i was doing with a personal challenge we'd discussed a couple weeks back. The assistant was also quite helpful, clearly committed to seeing me reach success and actually set up a time to meet with me Monday of the following week to touch bases and help in any way she could with mapping out my game plan. My experience has consistently been that most employees providing customer service, in various capacitites, do merely whats required, failing to demonstrate the authenticity, genuine compassion knowledge and skill these women in the BFET Program have demonstrated, providing the feeling we are on the same team, working toward a common goal, in this case- my success, which is greatly valued and appreciated. read more

I love the college cuz it's welcoming and it makes me feel like I actually belong somewhere, the professors are awesome there, so I recommend it to anyone who wants to go to the college. read more

Avoid SCC at all costs!!! Especially if you are recieving federal student loan! I had a horrible case of lies and missrepresentation from Financial Aid Office people (they handle Federal Loans), that lead to me quiting the College after attending it for more than two years, with avarege 3.7GPA!!! And all this happenned because I had to cancell all classes in ONE quarter ONLY due to severe health issues my husband had at the time. When I tried to explain this(with all paperwork on hands) to Ryan who is a FA Employee at SCC, he lied to me on several occassions, several different things why my case cannot be described as "hardship" without even looking into medical records I brought. Turnes out, I've wasted my time, because as Ryan told me during our last meeting, "he missrepresented" the information to me. The valuable time was lost on an idiot, who by the way still works for SCC, who had no idea what he was talking about! Had no knowledge of rules and policies of the SCC. I tried to reach Dean at SCC, however, she never (in my five times) visiting her, and leaving THREE !!!! voicemessages, returned my call or showed up at her office during her workhours! I will NEVER recommend this school to anybody who wants a degree! Unless you have tons of money to waste, you better stay clear off the SCC! read more

The Financial Aid office is horrible. I have been dealing with them since January on processing the current years paperwork for my daughter. You can't leave a message because the mailbox is full, you send an email and they don't reply back. They applied all paperwork for next school year, that should of applied to this school year. They treated my daughter like she was an idiot and didn't know what she was talking about and the person with her spoke poor English. As a single mom, this is frustrating when I am trying to figure out how I am supposed to pay for school, when they can't do their job correctly or give you correct information. 3 different people I have dealt with since January have all told me different things. Thank goodness she is done after this quarter, it has been an awful 2 years dealing with people that don't know how to do their jobs correctly or efficiently. read more
