What a fantastic place! It has a cozy vibe. We shared a booth near the bar that had a sense of…read moreprivacy to it. It was busy on a Saturday at 5pm, and was fully packed as we left. A motorcycle gathering had closed the street outside, so we felt very lucky to get a seat when we did. The tap list here is impressive. I was thrilled that they had so many ciders to choose from, including several from one of my favorite cideries, 2 Towns. My husband was happy to have one of his favorite imports, Kilkenny, which is hard to find in the US, and followed it up with a local beer from Fernson, Ears Up. We started off with a South Dakota specialty, Chislic. I asked our server if it was more authentic grilled or fried, and she said grilled. They were really good! My husband had the Bourbon Bacon Burger with garlic fries. He really enjoyed it. I snagged a fry and it was tasty, with bold garlic. I had the pork tacos. These were not small street tacos, but very filling full-size tacos. A bit messy, but our server left us plenty of napkins. When she came by to ask if we needed anything more, we asked for the check. She said it'd be right out, and asked if we'd like free mini cupcakes as a thank you. She commented they'd been short staffed. I must say, everyone in there was working hard (the boss came by to check with us several times) and we have no complaints, only compliments. We then shared two mini cupcakes, one vanilla and one red velvet. It was a sweet ending to a really great meal.

Good pub food and great service! The cheese curds are yummy and the beer selection is extensive.read more

Very good beers on tap from Brookings-based Eponymous Brewing Company. We liked it so much, we came for breakfast on Saturday morning as well. We both really enjoyed the stuffed waffles. I did appreciate that we were seated right away (reservations took priority over walk ins) but it took about 10 minutes before we were handed waters and menus. It then took 30 minutes before we received our appetizer to which we were then told the rest of our food was done at the same time. Typically, I don't prefer to eat my appetizer at the same time as my entree, but in this case I worried with how slow of service we were receiving I wouldn't see my entree for another hour. Almost all of our food was amazing. I ordered a house salad and the Fillet of Beef with mashed potatoes. My boyfriend ordered the chicken and wild rice soup and the prime rib. He said the prime rib wasn't anything to write home about but it did the job. Overall, service was slow but everyone was super nice. I think they just need to hire a few more people which I know is difficult to do. I really hope this place can find the help they need because the food is so good and I want to see this place continue to succeed.

You never have to worry about having to listen to that latest Rihanna single that's driving you crazy or watching a group of underaged girls having a catfight. You're safe from all that BS as soon as you step into Jim's...just avoid the occasional creepers sitting at the bar! Cash only. There's an ATM inside. One of the signature drinks is called the "Backpacker." You can get it by the pitcher and save some dough. I've tasted it and it's surprisingly delicious (despite the florescent green hue), but I never order it anymore because it's made with Mountain Dew and gives me gut rot. :) If your stomach can handle some soda, try this drink! It's kind of a "local delicacy." I believe they make it in different flavors now, but I have not personally seen or tasted this.

If you're in Brookings and looking for a place to drink, perhaps you should consider Jim's Tap…read more Based on the name, I thought we were going to a bit of a sports bar. When we walked into the place, I quickly realized my assessment was wrong. Jim's Tap is a Medieval-themed bar at least in the decor. It was sort of like being in an episode of "Game of Thrones" only with no blood or boinking or that punk Joffrey. I wish Joffrey was there. I would kick him in the nuts and then punch him in the face. And then start yelling: "Who's on top and who's on bottom now!?" But I digress ... No servers were dressed in any sort of steward or beer wench costume, but credit is not accepted. Don't worry. You don't have to pay in gold or silver, but you do need to pay with American cash. The walls are decorated with swords. The place also is dimly lit. The tables and chairs aren't so much Medieval though ... they're more like old school lounge bar ... the chairs are comfy. I went here twice while visiting Brookings. The first time our host purchased a pitcher of a green concoction and a pinkish drink. The green was some melon mixed drink. The pinkish colored one was called, I believe, an Apple Packer. Both tasted like Sweet Tarts mixed with Pixie Stix. Not really my thing, but I guess it's nice to have the option. The second time, I had a beer. It was Monty Python's Holy Grail on tap. This is not the best beer, but it's nice to see they tried to have the bar theme incorporated into the beer list. Both nights we sat outside. It was a little chilly, but not bad in part because there is a great fire place on the patio. If you are doing hardcore parcore though, be careful of the grill. One person in our group accidentally knocked the lid off of the grill while doing hardcore parcore. We received a finger wag over it, but the server seemed to understand it was an accident. In summary, get cash. Go to Jim's. Drink. And drink some outside by fire.

One cost $7 and the other one $8. After that I changed my mind and did not order an entree. I had to go back on my word that I was taking my grandson out for lunch. The place could have been a whole lot cleaner. I wouldn't say it was filthy but I wouldn't say it was clean. The menus were actually sticky and had food and gunk stuck to them. The waitress was perky and friendly and running around doing her best to keep everyone attended to. When I told her that the food she brought out was subpar and I wasn't happy with it, she said that it was fine but she would get me replacements. It was moments later she came back with food that looked exactly the same. I told her that I wasn't convinced it wasn't the same food... I swear it was just a burnt as burnt looking as before but it turned out she was right. This time the mini corn dogs were burnt on the outside and still frozen in the middle. My son-in-law, the chef, tells me that it was because the oil was old and rancid. Apparently this gives all food the appearance of being burnt with a bad taste. What I didn't appreciate was that I was asked to pay for food that anybody would have raised an eyebrow at and treated like I was the problem. The cook even came out of the kitchen and tried to nonchalantly check out who I was. When I met her I she gave me a dirty look and marched back off into the kitchen. Not recommended. I won't ever go back. If they don't know enough to know that they're serving people bad food or have the professionalism to own up to it when they have, then I have no time for them.
