A review from my son, age 9: I started karate three years ago by being inspired when my sister did…read moreit. It was surprisingly hard, but after a while I got used to it. I go to karate two times a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. Going to tournaments was scary at first but now it's just hard. Karate has helped me make a lot more friends. I cannot tell if I'm regretting becoming a black belt. My mother says I have to do some sport and this is the only one I want to do right now.

I wanted to do something new but active but also potentially useful...a Google search Led me to…read morethis business. When I first joined there was a deal going where you could attend 3 classes or so for around $50. I don't even think I had officially signed up for this online yet but the next day someone called me to connect. Eventually I did purchase it and went to the classes. Mind you, this has been my experience as an adult (there is also a lot of programming for children but I'm not familiar). But from what I've seen, if I had a kid, I would enroll them here. The place is definitely family friendly. I liked the structure of each 45-50 min class, it seemed to be divided into thirds where you spent a portion learning a new self defense technique, one portion learning a Kata and another portion doing HIIT (high intensity interval training) type work kickboxing style...with punches and kicks...i felt like I was getting an amazing workout. As I committed to the program, before you can get your white belt, you have to memorize a creed (it seems to be their creed as we repeat it in almost every class) and recite it in front of the class...Im an adult but I can see why this is included especially for kids to build confidence. Every few months there is belt testing to graduate to the next belt - you're observed on your enthusiasm, knowledge of the self defenses...and your cardiovascular strength...whew. That last part was unexpected for me and was definitely the hardest part. As far as building confidence, this seems to be one of their primary goals, encouraging you to be loud and high energy while also disciplined. They also have "lessons of the week". there are a few Instructors, all extremely friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful...also interestingly they are at different levels of their black belt journey and ages (actually I will say the group of instructors is very pleasantly diverse). The primary instructor, I believe, is Mr. C. I saw another review mention the "YES SIR/MA'AM" military style and being turned off by it, for me, I think it's cute (if you can call karate cute, lol) and I see why they do it BUT it can feel infantilizing at times, maybe it's because the instructors so often deal with young children...or perhaps it's just my personality. I believe the expect you to commit to 2 classes per week and they definitely mark attendance. Every week they send an email with the calendar of sessions and you're expected to sign up...you definitely get a check in text if you sign up for a class but don't attend. (they say the number of spots per class is limited but I've never seen them reach the limit). All in all, I've been enjoying my time and plan to stick with it. It does however seem like the class structure is changing a bit so there is less of a dedicated HIIT section and it's just woven throughout the class instead. I'm not a fan which is why I removed a star. I definitely feel like I'm getting less of a workout - this may not matter to some but fitness was part of why I joined. Also, as far as quality control goes, I definitely have a more robust experience with certain instructors over others.

I'm not the type of person that is big on the GYM. I hate going and have trouble forcing myself. So…read morethe other night at 11pm I was thinking I have to do something. I need a hobby man. I search to see what the deal was with this gym I passed a few times while biking. I saw it was an MMA gym and they were having a $19 week. So you can go to as many classes as you want in one week for $19. So I was like ok I'll try it. Being weird and uncomfortable in my own skin like I am I was anxious to walk in. So the next day i got a text from them. I replied I wanted to go over the options with someone in person. So they said stop in a little early. I got there at 5:40 while a kids class was going on. The owner sauntered over and introduced himself. Thanked me for coming. He seems like a very zen type of person. He showed me where to sit while the front desk helped someone else. Guy at the front desk was super helpful and easy to talk to. He gave the down low and didn't apply any pressure to sign up now OR DIE. You know how some places are. He just got me ready and then showed me where to go. The 101 class was really cool. A lot of people were new or just there to learn self defense. I didn't feel like there was any competitive I have to be the best. Everyone was pleasant and there to learn. Good mix of people too. The 101 class started on time and shot straight into drills. There was no time wasted in the hour class. So anyway I was impressed so I went back to the front desk. Again no pressure. He was just like oh how did you like it? He showed me a few benifits of signing up in the next 24 hours and then was going to leave it at that. I was like no sign me up now. So I got 2 weeks free, got my $19 back and got a discount on the sign up fee. All in all it came out to $169 a month I think. I wont be billed til April. The owner came over again while eating a banana and asked if I liked it too. I wanted to go back for the next 101 on Wednesday but my arms are really sore. So I'll wait til Friday.

If you're looking for a laid back, go at your own pace, scented candles and freshly laundered towels kind of gym...stop reading this and go elsewhere. Joey is there to push you to the brink. He's got a zero bullshit tolerance and I can respect that. To the people who complain that they aren't allowed into class late, the classes are less than an hour so you should really be getting there EARLY to make sure you're getting the benefit of the entire class. Boxing is a wonderful sport and everyone I have met through it is extremely disciplined and Joey is no different. Give Joltin' Jabs a try and see if you can hang! Get there. Get there early. Get a great workout. Repeat.

Joey (owner/trainer) is so nice but isn't afraid to call you out if you're not giving 100%. If you don't like profanity, maybe this isn't the place for you. Personally I love it, that's prob why I keep coming back. Classes run 50 minutes. Start with a 10ish minute warm up of ab/arm workouts. In groups of four, you then move through stations: heavy bag, speed bag, double end bag. In between, you're doing whole class cardio activities: jump rope, burpees, push ups, crab walk, bear crawl, etc. During all stations, Joey is constantly walking around and fixing form. There are no breaks, bring water and a towel. I'm definitely sore after each class and I'm pretty in shape. My only complaint is the gloves, make sure to wash your hands on the way out. Yes they're clean-ish, just smelly. But hey, he offers gloves to borrow so thats kewl. OH ALSO! Classes are offered at awesome times for all those in the full time work misery. Morning (6-9am), lunch, and evening (530-730pm). Single drop in classes are $27. I hope he runs some specials.
