The Shoulder of Mutton is a classic English pub, popular with locals and visitors alike. It is situated just on the edge of the small Derbyshire village of Oakthorpe. It has a distinct bar and lounge area; the bar is always packed with locals, but in the lounge you can normally manage to get a seat. The owners are friendly and serve a cracking pint! I've played a few quiz league fixtures here and whilst the home team are competitive, they were genial hosts and the food they served was some of the best in the league.
The Shoulder also has a restaurant which is very popular, so its definitely advisable to book, particularly at Christmas. As anywhere, the Shoulder has its regulars. The food is traditional English: roasts, wholesome homemade pies, steaks etc. The menu has varied little over the years, but the food is tasty and you get a choice of vegetables and potatoes. A good selection of desserts too, both hot and cold, they do a great apple pie! The only disappointing part of a three course meal at the Shoulder are the starters, they taste good, but the portions are a little frugal. Overall a good hearty meal, that I would definitely recommend, however, the after dinner coffees are seriously strong, definitely a high caffeine content! read more
