Just had such a nice phone call with Greg, one of the managers here, to help me stock up on my beloved Ruby incense before the holidays. He picked up the phone right away, even though I called the minute the clock switched to 8am, and was so kind and helpful with an order I'd wanted to adjust. We have been buying Shoyeido for years (bring back beloved Ranka orchid please!) but was my first time calling the store...in a time of AI robots and overseas call centers, it was such a nice customer service experience, I had to leave a note! This location is actually the warehouse, and it's located in a business complex. However, if you're looking for good incense this is it. They actually sell their products in stores like Whole Foods but the advantage of going to the warehouse is you get to see their array of products and talk to someone. Their incense is awesome. Unlike Indian incense, this is Japanese so when you burn it is does not give off huge amounts of smoke. You get the wonderful smell of incense without having to feel like you're walking through fog. They have a show room in the lobby and a sales associate will come out to provide you will all kinds of information about the products and help you pick out the scents that work for you. If you're into tea ceremonies this place is it. I don't know much about them but they have a lot of products geared towards conducting the ceremony. They will also give you samples! If you love incense and are the type of person that really likes to know about what they're buying I would check out this location. They really give you hands on customer service and a quality product. read more

Shoyeido is a bit hard to find and relatively small, but this is their one and only retail outlet in North America, making it well worth the visit. I get the impression that they don't have many walk-in retail customers, because it is also their American wholesale division and warehouse, but if you do want to peruse their selection, the staff members are gracious, generous, and happy to serve. They also have a deep understanding not just of the finest incense available, but also of the tradition of incense and Japanese culture, including Ko-do, the Japanese incense ceremony. In addition, they also have all the tools and ingredients necessary for the ceremony - including raw ingredients for making your own incense! True to Japanese tradition as well, the staff gave me small gifts to show appreciation, which I thought was very generous, especially given that I was taking up so much of their time. I had a million questions, and they actually seemed to take joy in my excitement and eagerness to learn more. And while this is the best incense available - light years beyond the stuff you find at a New Age bookstore - the fine quality doesn't mean it isn't affordable. Sure, they have incense that is so expensive it will blow your mind, but they also have amazingly high quality incense that is very affordable (cheap enough to use daily). I should also note that I have pretty severe allergies, but practice chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony, and incense is pretty much mandatory, and I have never had a problem with any Shoyeido product. They just don't use the chemicals and artificial crap you find in so many other brands. Also, I attend a yoga class twice a week where we burn Shoyeido incense, and not a single person has had a problem with it (while people have even had asthma attacks with other brands of incense). They also have books and other accoutrements for learning or practicing incense and other aspects of Japanese culture. All in all, it's a place I try to visit every time I go to Boulder. It might not primarily be geared toward retail, but the retail experience there is just fantastic nonetheless. But be warned: once you smell what REAL incense is like, you'll gag when you smell the cheap, artificial stuff from now on. But it's so worth it! read more

Shoyeido's product line on display in the lobby of their only US facility. A friendly, knowledgeable receptionist is nearby to answer questions and assist with your selection. A variety of package sizes available that afford you the opportunity to try new items without having to purchase a large quantity of something you may not like. The incense is absolutely the best I have ever used. The packaging is absolutely beautiful and you immediately know that the contents are very special. Would make an elegant gift. read more
